Jon Batiste Makes ‘Americana Blues Statement’ on Rootsy New Album ‘Big Money’
Image
As a teenage musician, Jon Batiste used to call himself “a new-age blues artist.” Now, many genre-jumps later, he’s taking a deeply enjoyable left turn towards roots music on his seventh studio album, Aug. 22’s Big Money — and reminding the world he’s always been a bluesman at heart. “I’m just now making an explicit Americana blues statement,” Batiste says, “but for me, it’s at the beginning. Karla Sofía Gascón Was Not Invited to Join the Academy, Bucking Tradition for Oscar Nominees
Image
Karla Sofía Gascón will not be voting for the next Best Picture winner. The Spanish actress, who was nominated this year for Best Actress for “Emilia Pérez,” was not on the list of 534 people whom the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences invited to join. Gascón’s co-star Adriana Paz, who was not nominated, was among the 2025 invitees. Their “Emilia Pérez” co-star Zoe Saldaña, who won this year for Best Supporting Actress, was already a member.

While an Oscar nomination automatically qualifies someone for Academy membership, an invitation is not a guarantee. In this case, the Actors Branch would make a recommendation and then the Academy Board of Governors has final say. But Gascón, who found herself at the center of a prolonged controversy this past winter due to the discovery of racist tweets she had previously sent, is only the second first-time Best Actress nominee from the past...

Percy Jackson Star Hints at Higher Stakes in Season 2: ‘Even Chiron Gets in a Little Trouble’
Image
Danger always follows Percy Jackson and the Olympians' hero around, even in the comforts of Camp Half-Blood.

Speaking with Screen Rant, Chiron actor Glynn Turman briefly addressed the new drama Percy will face upon returning to the demigod campgrounds, including the arrival of mythogical figure Tantalus (Veep's Timothy Simons) as Camp Half-Blood's new activities director. Being a far less pleasant face in the role than Chiron, the actor teased how the series' status quo will be "shaken up in a good way. You have to remember the stakes are even higher now. Everybody is trying to form different alliances, even Chiron gets in a little trouble here and there. You'll see that in Season 2. It's quite a dynamic."

Much like his mythology backstory, Percy Jackson's Tantalus was punished in the Underworld for the crime of killing and feeding his son to Zeus as a meal, forever surrounded by food...

'The System Is Not Really Designed for Us': Halle Berry Claims Black Female Actors Should Stop 'Coveting' Oscars
Image
The long wait for another Black female actor to win the Best Actress Academy Award goes on as Halle Berry remains the only one to take home Hollywood's biggest honor. Frustrated with that wait, Berry advises Black women in the film industry to stop "coveting" Oscars because they aren't "designed" for women who look like her to win them.

Speaking on the newly-released Apple TV+ documentary, Number One on the Call Sheet (via The Guardian), which chronicles the influence and plights of iconic Black actors in the movie industry, Berry addressed the fact she remains the lone Black Best Actress Oscar winner 23 years after her historic triumph. As groundbreaking as her achievement is, Berry thinks it's lost some meaning given that no other Black woman has succeeded since her win, claiming the long wait has “forced me to ask myself, did it matter? Did it really change anything for women of color?...

Halle Berry Reflects on Being the Only Black Best Actress Oscar Winner: “Did It Really Change Anything for Women of Color?”
Image
Halle Berry is opening up about being the first — and only — Black woman to have won the Oscar for best actress in the nearly 100-year history of the Academy Awards.

In the Apple TV+ documentary Number One on the Call Sheet, Berry reflects on what has happened since she won the Oscar in 2002, for her role in Monster’s Ball. In that time, no other Black actress has taken home the award.

“It’s forced me to ask myself, did it matter?” Berry asks. “Did it really change anything for women of color? For my sisters? For our journey?”

The documentary shows a montage of Black actresses losing out to white women at the Oscars. Overall, 13 Black actresses have been nominated for the honor, including, most recently, Cynthia Erivo, who’s been nominated twice. This year, Erivo was nominated for her role in Wicked but lost to Anora star Mikey Madison.

How playing Ronnie Spector could earn Zendaya her first Oscar nomination
Image
As it turns out, Zendaya would never let go of playing Ronnie Spector. Five years after it was announced that the Emmy Award-winning Euphoria star would embody the Ronettes lead singer in a feature film, Deadline reported on Wednesday that the A24 project had secured a new director in Oscar winner Barry Jenkins. Dave Kajganich, a frequent Luca Guadagnino collaborator, is now writing the screenplay after Pulitzer Prize winner Jackie Sibblies Drury was initially mentioned as a possible screenwriter in 2020 when the project was first announced.

Deadline offered no timeline for the Spector film, but it’s safe to assume it’ll be a while. Jenkins was recently attached to direct a science-fiction movie for Universal with Glen Powell in a lead role. At the same time, Zendaya is seemingly constantly busy and now filming Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey. However, whenever the project comes to fruition and lands an actual release date,...

Disney+ Greenlights Percy Jackson and the Olympians Season 3 Ahead of Season 2
Rick Riordan
Disney+ has announced an early renewal for Percy Jackson and the Olympians, confirming a third season before the second season has aired. The decision reflects confidence in the adaptation of Rick Riordan’s book series, which has been one of the most successful original shows on the streaming platform.

Season 2, which wrapped production in January, is scheduled to premiere in December, two years after the first season debuted. The renewal of Season 3 allows the creative team to continue developing the series without major delays, an approach that co-showrunner Jonathan E. Steinberg has emphasized as a priority.

“Part of wanting to keep the process going is trying to do whatever we can to be ready for it and to know how to have the conversations and to have a plan,” Steinberg said in a recent interview.

The upcoming third season will be based on The Titan’s Curse, the third book in...

Walker Scobell in Percy Jackson and the Olympians (2023)
Disney+ is giving Percy Jackson and the Olympians an early start on its future.

The streamer has renewed the series, based on author Rick Riordan’s quintet of novels, for a third season. The pickup comes well ahead of season two for Percy Jackson, which Disney+ says will premiere in December — two years after the debut of its first season.

“From the moment Percy Jackson and the Olympians debuted, it was clear this series had struck a chord with fans of all ages,” Disney Branded Television president Ayo Davis said in a statement. “With season two set to premiere this December, we’re thrilled to announce that Percy’s journey will continue with a third season. Huge thanks to our incredible cast and creative team, our partners at 20th Television, and our visionary and talented producers who continue to bring Rick Riordan’s world to life with such depth and imagination.

Amber Ruffin Takes Jabs at Dei Rollback and Elon Musk During African American Film Critics Association Awards
Image
“I have to be honest, things, they feel really bad right now,” comedian Amber Ruffin said in her intro monologue at the 16th Annual African American Film Critics Association Awards, which she hosted in Los Angeles on Wednesday night. “Between the rollback of diversity, equity and inclusion, the price of eggs and the price of Cowboy Carter tickets, it’s insane. Ticketmaster needs to be canceled. I don’t trust anything with ‘master’ in the name.”

Thus began a series of hilarious quips about the country’s socio-political climate from Ruffin, who’s written for Late Night with Seth Meyers for over a decade and hosted her own late-night talk show, The Amber Ruffin Show, from 2020 to 2023.

“It can be hard to celebrate when it feels like our country is taking one hundred steps back,” Ruffin later stated. “Do you all remember the good old days when you were proud to say,...

Fernanda Torres becomes second Brazilian actress nominated for Best Actress Oscar, 26 years after her mother
Image
Fernanda Torres made history on Thursday morning as only the second Brazilian to receive a Best Actress nomination at the Oscars. The I’m Still Here star follows in the footsteps of her mother, Fernanda Montenegro, who was the first to do it in 1999 for Central Station. Walter Salles directed both films.

In I’m Still Here, Torres plays Eunice Paiva, a mother and activist who copes with the forced disappearance of her husband, the dissident politician Rubens Paiva, during Brazil’s military dictatorship. Adapted from Marcelo Rubens Paiva‘s memoir, I’m Still Here earned an additional Oscar bid for Best International Feature.

In January, Torres stunned pundits by winning the Golden Globe Award for Best Drama Actress, solidifying her status as a serious contender for the Oscars. Montenegro’s portrayal of the older version of Torres’ character in the film adds a sentimental layer to this achievement.
