The 1987 sci-fi action classic RoboCop is one of those rare perfect movies. Everything about it works just right. The satire. The violence. The characters. The design of RoboCop himself. And it’s difficult to follow up perfection. Which is evident in RoboCop 2, a movie that tried to carry on the story… But ended up feeling tonally inconsistent and a bit scattered. It’s a fun movie, but not on the level of its predecessor. And now, we’re going to dig into just what happened to RoboCop 2.

With the MCU being the most successful cinematic franchise in history, the superhero genre has never been so huge as it is now - but it stands on the shoulders of a compendium of early pioneers that all superhero fans should watch. The building blocks that make the best superhero movies were established long before Iron Man revolutionized the genre. In fact, some of the best examples of superhero movies don't star Marvel or DC characters whatsoever.
Fans of the genre will be intimately familiar with the typical characteristics of a superhero movie. They tend to star a protagonist with extraordinary abilities, hinge on themes like heroism and self-discovery, and deliver spectacle in spades as they borrow from other prevalent genres like sci-fi, fantasy, and action. The movies that excel at conveying these elements span decades, but some of the best examples of superhero movies were released when the genre was in its infancy.

Watching an Action film is a surefire way to spark adrenaline: car chases, fight scenes, and big theatrical explosions are all perfectly timed for the heroes to look as cool and powerful as possible. Yet there cannot be a hero if there's no villain. Over the years, audiences have witnessed evil geniuses, disingenuous billionaires, and strong fighters who wreak havoc on unsuspecting cities across the world. Some fade away into oblivion as soon as they are defeated, but others have stood the test of time.
A-list actors have often expressed that playing the bad guy is more fun and challenging. In order to deliver a compelling on-screen villain, it's important to dig into their motivations and discover what makes them tick. When they manage to steal a scene and become the character that audiences are most drawn to, then it's clear they've done their dastardly job well.

Micheal Keaton is just as comfortable playing a bad guy as he is a heroic lead, with a strong track record of movie villainy. Michael Keaton is perhaps one of the most charming, impressively fluid actors of his generation to persist into the modern day of pop culture relevancy. Though Keaton's comedy performances and time leading the action as a superhero in the Batman movies are his most well-known roles, the charismatic actor has become quite proficient with his antagonists over the years.
There are many aspects to Michael Keaton that make him a great bad guy. His raw charm and force of personality makes him a fun villain to root for, somehow winning over audience affections despite being a terrible person. His ability to flip a switch and instantly go from hilarious to threatening also helps him explode as volatile characters. Suffice it to say, some of Michael...

The 2014 remake of RoboCop is disappointing in many ways, but one behind-the-scenes detail makes its failure even more disheartening by showing how good it could have been. The RoboCop remake is, simply put, not a great film. It's often listed among the worst science fiction reboots of all time, and it only has 49% on Rotten Tomatoes. Given the popularity and cult-classic status of Paul Verhoeven and Peter Weller's original 1987 film, RoboCop 2014 was a major disappointment. Even Alex Murphy actor Joel Kinnaman tried to explain why RoboCop 2014 was a failure.
There are plenty of reasons why RoboCop was a bad remake, but one of them unfortunately proved that the movie could have been great. There's usually a wide range of factors that turn a good idea into an underwhelming final product. Everything from difficult developments to outside influences like poor marketing and a bad release date can help...

Kurtwood Smith is one of the oldest veterans in the entertainment industry, but he might as well be one of the most underrated ones. Besides portraying Red Forman in That ’70s Show and proceeding to do the same in the spin-off sitcom That ’90s Show, he has also managed to score a one-way ticket in the superhero world, including playing Vernon Masters in MCU’s Agent Carter.

Captain Edward Jellico (Ronny Cox) first appeared in the brutal Star Trek: The Next Generation two-parter, Chain of Command, and he later returned as an admiral in Star Trek: Prodigy. Throughout TNGs run, visiting Starfleet captains and admirals were often used to create conflict and Captain Jellico filled this role in "Chain of Command." In the first half of the Tng two-parter, Captain Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart), Lt. Worf (Michael Dorn), and Dr. Beverly Crusher (Gates McFadden) go on a covert mission on a planet along the Cardassian border.
In Captain Picards absence, Starfleet sends Captain Jellico to take command of the Enterprise. Jellico had previously helped establish an armistice between the United Federation of the Planets and the Cardassian Union. The 2014 RoboCop reboot had one of the most impressively star-studded casts of any recent big-budget action movie, and it shouldve been successful enough to launch a franchise. Just over two decades after RoboCop 3 was panned as the worst entry in the RoboCop series (and one of the worst movies ever made), the franchise was rebooted for a modern blockbuster age. Elite Squads Jos Padilha took the helm in the directors chair, and original writers Edward Neumeier and Michael Miner worked on the script.
Altered Carbon star Joel Kinnaman inherited the lead role of Alex Murphy from Peter Weller and he was backed up by some of the biggest movie stars in the world in supporting roles. It had a whopping production budget to bring the explosive action and futuristic spectacle to life, and a talented crew to pull it off. The RoboCop reboot seemed to have everything going...

The first look of Éanna Hardwicke as Manchester United and Ireland soccer legend Roy Keane alongside Steve Coogan as his embattled Irish national manager Mick McCarthy, has been revealed from upcoming comedy biopic “Saipan.”
The film — first announced earlier in the year by Variety — chronicles one of the most infamous moments in Irish sporting history, when Keane and McCarthy had a very public falling out. Alongside Hardwicke and Coogan, the supporting cast includes Alice Lowe (“Sightseers”), Jamie Beamish (“Derry Girls”), Alex Murphy (“Young Offenders”), Harriet Cains (“Bridgerton”) and Peter McDonald (“The Batman”).
“Saipan” is being directed by Glenn Leyburn and Lisa Barros D’Sa — the duo behind “Good Vibrations” and “Ordinary Love” — — working from an original script by Paul Fraser (“Dead Man’s Shoes”). Bankside Films is handling sales and will be showing a promo to buyers at the American Film Market.

We all know RoboCop's Prime Directives: Serve the public trust, protect the innocent, uphold the law. But soon we'll be discovering RoboCop's Prime Video Directives, as Amazon's upcoming TV series based on the iconic sci-fi franchise continues to build up a head of steam. Per Deadline's reporting, The Office US and Pushing Daisies veteran Peter Ocko has been tapped to write, showrun, and executive produce the prospective new series, with Conjuring universe creator James Wan also aboard to EP under his Atomic Monster banner.
First floated as an idea for Amazon when the company purchased MGM Studios for a staggering $8.5 billion back in 2022, this new take on RoboCop will be the first screen outing for the cyborg law enforcer since the somewhat lacklustre 2014 reboot with Joel Kinnaman. As per Paul Verhoeven's original 1987 classic, Amazon's RoboCop is set to once again centre around a part-man, part-machine man of...

Amazon's Robocop TV show gets a new update, revealing that a showrunner has been brought on board. Released in 1987 and directed by Paul Verhoeven, the first Robocop movie starred Peter Weller as the titular cyborg police officer. The franchise returned in 2014 for a failed reboot starring Joel Kinnaman, with the property then moving to Amazon with the company's purchase of MGM in 2022. It was subsequently reported that a Robocop TV show was in the works, though few updates about the project have emerged since.
Now, Variety reports that Peter Ocko has joined the Robocop TV show as showrunner. James Wan has also boarded the series and will executive produce the project through his production company, Atomic Monster. The report includes the official logline for the series, included below, which teases a premise similar to that of the original film:

Back in 2022, Amazon closed an $8.5 billion acquisition of the film studio MGM, giving them ownership of the studio’s thousands of films and TV shows. Last year, we heard that the six MGM properties Amazon was most interested in doing something with were Poltergeist, Stargate, The Thomas Crown Affair, Legally Blonde, Rocky, and RoboCop… and we’ve recently heard updates on some of those projects, with a Poltergeist TV series finding its showrunners and Michael B. Jordan signing on to both direct and star in a new version of The Thomas Crown Affair. Now Deadline has broken the news that a new RoboCop TV series is moving forward and has James Wan, the director of such films as Saw, The Conjuring, and Aquaman, on board as executive producer.

Robocop continues to progress through the development process at Amazon MGM Studios. Veteran Peter Ocko (Lodge 49) has been tapped as writer, executive producer and showrunner on the potential series, based on the MGM movie franchise, with horror master James Wan on board to executive produce through his Atomic Monster banner.

Best known for his roles in RoboCop and That '70s Show, Kurtwood Smith has played four different characters in Star Trek movies and TV shows. Smith's breakthrough movie role was Clarence Boddicker opposite Star Trek into Darkness' Peter Weller as Alex Murphy/RoboCop in Paul Verhoeven's brutal sci-fi satire. After RoboCop, Kurtwood Smith went on to star in an eclectic collection of movies from Rambo III to Dead Poet's Society. In tandem with his movie career, Kurtwood Smith made many guest appearances on popular shows such as The X-Files, 3rd Rock from the Sun, and two Star Trek TV shows.
In 1998, Kurtwood Smith was cast as Red Forman in That '70s Show, starring in 200 episodes of the nostalgic sitcom. One of Kurtwood Smith's That '70s Show co-stars was Don Stark, who is best known to Star Trek fans as the actor who played Nicky the Nose in 1996's Star Trek: First Contact.

RoboCop became both a blockbuster and a controversial critical darling upon its release in 1987 due to a mix of jet black humor and as subtle as a jackhammer social commentary sticking a perfect landing. Its success was a surprise to an industry that had looked at Edward Neumeier and Michael Miner’s original script with its simplistic one-word comic book title and assumed it was fated to be a high-concept stinker.

Peter Weller has been in some of the most acclaimed films of the 80s and 90s. He starred in Buckaroo Banzai, Mighty Aphrodite, The New Age, and Naked Lunch. In the 2000s and 2010s, he played Christopher Henderson and Stan Liddy in the fifth seasons of 24 and Dexter respectively. In film, he most popularly appeared as Alexander Marcus in 2013’s Star Trek Into Darkness.

The ever-articulate and principled Peter Weller has told us a lot about ourselves in his roles as an actor and director. Learning more about this gifted storyteller and true Renaissance man can tell us even more. But Weller hasn’t been seen in a major motion picture since 2013’s Star Trek Into Darkness, which ended a long silver screen hiatus. Is the man’s relative absence from the silver screen a product of demand, or might it be more down to his preference? Should his career be brought back into the mainstream spotlight like he was Murphy returning from the afterlife? Or is he busy doing different, more interesting things than being a badass in front of a camera? Let’s find out as we ask ourselves, Wtf happened to Peter Weller?
But first, let’s get a better feel for why the man has been so missed by starting at the beginning.

When you think of Paul Verhoeven’s 1987 ultraviolent crime thriller- Robocop (watch it Here)- does your brain jump straight to horror? After all, what makes a horror film? Or better yet, what made a horror film in the 80s? If you ask me, a dark sci-fi style noir film with brutal kills, body horror, excessive drugs, and, of course, even some Tna- is well suited to be on our list of iconic horror films that deserve to be praised and properly deconstructed.

Verhoeven felt that the 2012 Total Recall remake lacked the mystery of the original, missing the ambiguity and unique musical motifs. According to Verhoeven, the problem with the 2014 RoboCop remake was that it made the leading character too tragic, taking away from the original's blend of tragedy and acceptance. Both the Total Recall and Robocop remakes were not as successful as Verhoeven's original versions.
Paul Verhoeven, director of the sci-fi classics Total Recall and RoboCop, has offered his thoughts about the more recent remakes of his beloved movies. A Dutch filmmaker with a long history of screen credits dating as far back as the 1960s, Verhoeven’s second English-language movie, RoboCop, quickly turned him into a household name for American audiences. He would also follow up his 1987 hit with the 1990 Arnold Schwarzenegger movie Total Recall. Both movies would later receive far less successful remakes in 2012 and 2014.

An unexpected crossover between RoboCop and Star Wars sees Alex Murphy (RoboCop) and C-3Po pairing for a pregnancy photo. The two franchises have shared qualities with robotic characters, but may not cross over well due to differences in focus and relevancy. The franchises are separated by different settings, making a crossover unlikely, despite the potential for unique moments (although those moments may not involve C-3Po getting pregnant).

Sidekicks in sci-fi films often steal the show with their lovable and memorable characters. Sci-fi films feature a wide range of great sidekick characters that add depth and dynamics to the story. Sidekicks like Anne Lewis, Groot, Fritz, and Chewbacca showcase loyalty and form strong bonds with the main characters.
The science fiction genre is full of iconic sidekick characters, like Dr. Frankenstein’s lab assistant Fritz, Ripley’s surrogate daughter Newt from Aliens, and Han Solo’s Wookiee co-pilot Chewbacca from the Star Wars saga. From George Costanza to Dick Grayson, there are plenty of iconic sidekicks that are adored by fans. Sidekicks are often even more lovable than the main characters, because they’re not burdened with the beats of a hero’s journey; they can just show up and steal every scene they’re in. MGM continues to develop "RoboCop Returns" as a direct sequel to director Paul Verhoeven's original, satirical, ultra-violent "RoboCop" (1987) feature with director Abe Forsythe ("Little Monsters") on board to rewrite a screenplay by Justin Rhodes ("Terminator: Dark Fate"), Ed Neumeier and Michael Miner:
"In the original film, Detroit is on the verge of collapse due to financial mismanagement and a high crime rate. The city signs a deal with the mega-corporation 'Omni Consumer Products' (Ocp) to run Detroit's police department in exchange for letting Ocp rebuild run-down sections of the city into a high-end utopia. Senior Vice President 'Dick Jones' demonstrates a new law enforcement robot, 'Ed-209'.

Science fiction movies often feature compelling antiheroes who challenge traditional notions of heroism. The genre explores the darker sides of human nature and society, creating lawless dystopian futures where antiheroes are the only ones who can bring justice. From Wolverine to Han Solo, the sci-fi genre is filled with memorable antiheroes who captivate audiences with their complex and morally ambiguous characters.
From Blade Runner’s Rick Deckard to A Clockwork Orange’s Alex DeLarge to the title character from the Mad Max franchise, the science fiction genre has delivered some of cinema’s most compelling antiheroes. The late 20th century was a wild time to be a kid immersed in the world of pop culture. It was the period that produced Jessica Rabbit, a cartoon character you felt embarrassed to watch with your parents, and a time when stores regularly stocked movie tie-in toys linked to “kid-friendly” fare like Aliens and Terminator 2.
It seemed like nothing was off the table and that was certainly the case in the world of cartoons. Eager to cash in on the appeal of cinematic properties in a way that would give even the MCU pause for thought, a glut of animated shows inspired by movies featuring torture, nudity, beheadings, and buckets of toxic waste found their way onto the small screen. In most cases, the cartoons spawned rarely stuck around for long, but today they stand as examples of a weird and wonderful chapter in the history of small screen entertainment.

In a world where detailed action figures have become commonplace, Neca still stands out by making the type of action figures that no one else is giving the same amount of attention to. 1987's RoboCop was a satire of the corporate world and legal structure of the 1980s, a trend RoboCop 2 and 3 continued. The 2014 RoboCop remake lacked the satire and humor of the original movies in the franchise. The original RoboCop movie humorously criticizes the attitudes of business people during the 1980s.
In many ways, RoboCop is director Paul Verhoeven's quintessential sci-fi masterpiece, and much of the director's satire is found in RoboCop quotes throughout the franchise. Released in 1987, the first RoboCop movie seems like a straightforward sci-fi action film, but in reality, it is a smart, witty piece of filmmaking that blends social satire with ultra-violence and comedic one-liners. The movie follows a police officer gunned down and left for dead who ends up reincarnated in the body of a robotic police official whose only directive is to uphold the law. The main themes include corporate power and law enforcement overstepping its authority.

Paul Verhoeven’s 1987 film RoboCop has withstood the test of time. A whip-smart satire of the police industrial complex and capitalism, it has a unique and grimy flavor that’s rarely been replicated. And the premise of normal police officer Alex Murphy being turned into an unstoppable crime-stopping machine has an appeal that feels tailor made for video games. Years have passed and the RoboCop franchise has received numerous video game adaptations that range from arcade side scrollers to fighting games. Yet none have captured the feeling of the original film and the balance of style and substance it carried. None have ever made the player truly feel like a one-man war on crime in the streets of Detroit. None have ever really felt like RoboCop.

If there's a constant with cinematic sci-fi franchises, it's this: costume changes between movies allow for more toy designs, and thus sales. If there's a constant for sci-fi movies based on comics, it's that costumes will nearly always get a "more cinematic" redesign. Sometimes, that aligns with what the public wants, like Michael Keaton's 1989 Batsuit, which allayed fears that a less-muscular actor could play an intimidating superhero. Other times, it seems so out of left-field that we wonder what all involved were thinking.
This list encompasses many of these, and more. Whether they be alterations made in adaptation, in between sequels, or as supposed upgrades, the costume changes that follow are those which have engendered the most debate among sci-fi film fans. Sometimes, the debate clearly landed in favor of the initial skepticism. Other times, the changes actually worked for the specific story being told. The deleted scene in the 2014 Robocop reboot would have explained why Alex Murphy still has his human hand after becoming Robocop. The scene would have shown Omnicorp's CEO asking to keep Alex's hand intact to use it as a marketing tool and to appeal to the public's desire for a robotic officer who knows what it feels like to be human. The scene would also have highlighted the contrast between Omnicorp's agenda and Alex's perspective, emphasizing his struggle to retain his humanity in his new cybernetic body.

RoboCop became the strongest version of himself by using Terminator technology, merging his human mind with machine and becoming a powerful cyborg capable of killing armies of T-800s. This ultimate form of RoboCop, with his Terminator legion, showcased his ability to be a technological hive-mind, similar to other sci-fi franchises, and proved to be the strongest version of himself in any timeline.
In his base form, RoboCop is one of the strongest cyborgs in science fiction, as he’s immune to almost every weapon known to humankind and is even impervious to fire and immense blunt-force trauma, but even still, RoboCop has never been stronger than when he used Skynet’s Terminator technology to build his ultimate form.

RoboCop is revealed to be a direct prequel to The Terminator, as RoboCop's existence and connection to Skynet led to the development of Terminators and the eventual destruction of humanity. The crossover between RoboCop and Terminator is a creative approach that fits perfectly in terms of tone and meta criticisms, highlighting the dangers of corporate power and the consequences of human invention. The ever-changing timestream in the Terminator universe creates multiple origins, making it possible for RoboCop to exist in the same universe and serve as a canonical prequel.
It should come as no surprise to anyone that there’s a version of both The Terminator and RoboCop where the two continuities are connected, as both are beloved ‘80s Sci-Fi franchises featuring cybernetic heroes battling monstrous robotic villains. However, what may come as a bit of a shock is the extent of their connection, as RoboCop is actually a direct prequel to Terminator.

In the golden age of action movies, villains were more captivating and memorable than they are in modern franchises like the MCU and Fast and Furious. Iconic villains like the T-800 from The Terminator, Luther from The Warriors, and Clarence Boddicker from Robocop brought creativity, risk, and improvisation to action movie villains. Villains like Castor Troy from Face/Off, the Sheriff of Nottingham from Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, and Agent Smith from The Matrix added depth and made those films unforgettable.
Some action movies achieved classic status thanks to their iconic villains. Colorful and enthralling antagonists are something of a lost art in mainstream action cinema. While many modern films still boast complex, layered villains who present a compelling counterpoint to the hero’s way of life, it’s become rare for an action film’s villain to strike a vivid, eccentric image that makes them the highlight of the movie.
