Directed by Scott Beck and Bryan Woods, the film combines creeping dread with a thought-provoking exploration of faith, control, and human resilience. Fans can stream it today and pre-order a special edition Blu-ray or 4K Uhd featuring exclusive behind-the-scenes content.
Set against a chilling winter backdrop, Heretic follows Sister Barnes (Sophie Thatcher) and Sister Paxton (Chloe East), two Mormon missionaries sent to the secluded home of Mr. Reed (Hugh Grant), a reclusive and enigmatic man. What begins as a routine visit takes a sinister turn as Reed traps them in his house, forcing the women into a twisted experiment in faith and survival. With a haunting mix of manipulation and cruelty, Reed’s motives—and the horrifying truth behind them—unravel in a series of shocking revelations.

“Heretic” is an A24 horror movie starring Hugh Grant, Sophie Thatcher, and Chloe East. It is written and directed by Scott Beck and Bryan Woods.
In a surprising turn of events, Hugh Grant takes center stage in a genre that’s far from his usual comedic stomping grounds. “Heretic” is a religious horror film that could have easily fallen into the realm of mediocrity, but thanks to the deft hands of directors Scott Beck and Bryan Woods, it emerges as a genuinely good—perhaps even exceptional—piece of cinema.
The film follows two young Mormon girls who are invited into the home of an older man. As they begin to discuss religious precepts, the man, who appears to be highly knowledgeable, starts to challenge and question the girls’ beliefs. This simple premise sets the stage for a thought-provoking exploration of faith and doubt.

In "Heretic," Hugh Grant does something brand new as an actor — which is pretty shocking when you consider that the guy's been a major movie star since the 1990s — and takes on a role that uses his sheepish British charm in the scariest way possible. Namely, he plays the "bad guy" (so to speak) in "Heretic," a new horror thriller from Scott Beck and Bryan Woods where two Mormon missionaries, Sister Barnes and Sister Paxton stumble upon the home of a recluse named Mr. Reed (Grant). Mr. Reed invites the two girls into his home, but before long, they realize he may not be receptive to their invitation into the Mormon faith, and the situation is actually much worse than Mr. Reed just being an unwilling participant; they're actively in danger in his house.

Alrighty, the 2025 Golden Globes nominations are in, so, let’s talk snubs. While some films and performances got the love they deserved, there are a bunch of amazing ones that were totally left out. Honestly, it’s like the Hollywood Foreign Press Association had their own agenda and just decided to pretend some of these flicks didn’t exist. How can we overlook movies like Smile 2 or It Ends With Us? These films were truly buzzing all year, with top-notch performances, unique storytelling, and killer direction, but nothing. Nada.
And we don’t even want to get started with Nosferatu. It’s a literal chilling masterpiece that practically reinvented the gothic horror. No love? Really, rude. Then there’s Heretic, which apparently had audiences questioning with its mind-bending plot. Meanwhile, We Live In Time brought heartfelt drama and stunning performances, and somehow still flew under the radar. Really, it...

“The past will come back to hunt you...”
Following a brief teaser promo back in November, Showtime and Paramount+ (via FearHQ.com) have released the first full trailer for supernatural(?) survival drama, Yellowjackets, which is set to premiere with a double episode on February 14th, 2025.
The footage finds our beleaguered protagonists dealing with the fallout of the shocking season 2 finale, as it becomes clear that someone is attempting to hunt down and eliminate any of the island's survivors. We also get a first look at Hilary Swank's mysterious character right at the end, and confirmation that Jackie Taylor will return.
Ella Purnell has previously hinted that we may not have seen the last of Jackie, despite the character meeting a chilly end in the season 1 finale. Jackie has already shown up as a "ghost," and it looks like she'll be back to haunt present-day Shauna (Melanie Lynskey) in season 3.

While fans of the Showtime series Yellowjackets (read our review of season 2 Here) patiently wait to see the bonus episode that’s going to air sometime between the second and third seasons, it was recently announced that Yellowjackets season 3 is set to premiere on February 14th – and with that date swiftly approaching, a teaser trailer for the new season has arrived online. You can check it out in the embed above.
Yellowjackets is described as “equal parts survival epic, horror story, and coming-of-age drama.” The story centers on a team of wildly talented high school girls soccer players who become the (un)lucky survivors of a plane crash deep in the Ontario wilderness. Hungry for some new episodes of Showtime’s “Yellowjackets”? Ravenous perhaps? Well dig in, because your first look at Season 3 is here.
Featuring returning players Melanie Lynskey, Christina Ricci, Tawny Cyprus, Lauren Ambrose, and Elijah Wood, the older cast is now joined by Academy Award-winner Hilary Swank in an unknown role, but one thing’s for sure: She doesn’t seem happy to be crossing paths with this crew.
In the past timeline of the series, winter is finally subsiding, giving way to spring, but that doesn’t mean any less troubles ahead for the stranded teens, as their animalistic tendencies only seem to be growing with each passing day. In addition to living characters played by Sophie Nélisse, Jasmin Savoy Brown, Samantha Hanratty, Sophie Thatcher, and Courtney Eaton, the first looks also hints at the return of Ella Purnell as the ghost of Jackie, the first eaten by the group.

Things are only getting more difficult for the crash survivors in both the past and the present timelines with “Yellowjackets” Season 3.
The first teaser trailer for the hotly anticipated third season makes it plain what’s coming: the past. The warning is blasted loud over the first look, saying, “The past will come back to you.”
“Once upon a time, a bunch of teenage girls got stranded in the woods and they went completely nuts,” the Showtime teaser opens.
What follows is a smattering of images that show the ’90s crash survivors devolving further into their tribal and cult-like thinking – some even saying things like “can’t believe we didn’t eat that bitch first” – while the present day survivors try to figure out who is hunting them.
“The only people who know about this are either us or dead,” Van (Lauren Ambrose) theorizes as she and the remaining survivors...

Heretic Box Office (North America): Achieves A Remarkable Feat ( Photo Credit – YouTube )
Heretic is focused on its box office goals as it sets a new record with its domestic gross this weekend. The film is headlined by Hugh Grant, who is best known for his romantic movies. However, he has been taking adverse roles in the last few years, and the actor also enjoys playing such roles. Scroll below for more.
It is noteworthy as the cinemas are filled with major tentpole movies. Amidst that, Hugh’s film achieved a remarkable feat, which boosts the confidence of filmmakers who create small-budget movies. Horror movies have been performing well this year, and some of them include Smile 2, Terrifier 3, Alien: Romulus, and more. Grant’s film is an American psychological horror film by Scott Beck and Bryan Woods. The film’s cast includes Sophie Thatcher, Chloe East, and Topher Grace.

It’s easier to imagine selling A24 on a complex theological discussion masquerading as a horror-comedy about two missing Mormons — but it’s not that much easier.
Written and directed by Scott Beck and Bryan Woods (“A Quiet Place”), “Heretic” hit theaters on November 8 after premiering to mostly positive reviews at TIFF. A dialogue-heavy indie about society’s failing faith in God, the surprisingly heady abduction thriller found unlikely success in an eclectic month for genre. Heretic (2024) Movie Ending Explained: What Does the Butterfly Symbolize in the Ending of ‘Heretic’?
Hugh Grant, one of the most household names in Hollywood romcoms for two decades, is now pulling out all the big guns as the creepy, majestic, and hardcore critic of all things religion in Scott Beck and Bryan Woods’ new Mormon horror, Heretic (2024). Beck and Woods have previously tried their hands on filmmaking after co-writing the 2018 blockbuster “A Quiet Place,” but they couldn’t really tap into the horror genre before this venture with Grant. “Heretic” is one of those movies that stay with you long after you’re done watching it, and is bound to be a solid Thanksgiving horror for those who fancy the genre. The film raises questions about religious beliefs and points out the dogma behind every big religion. The cast also includes Sophie Thatcher and Chloe East as the two Church members stuck with Mr. Reed and his web of mind games.

More exciting news for Yellowjackets fans! Sarah Desjardins, who plays Callie Sadecki in the hit horror-thriller series, has been promoted to series regular for the upcoming season 3. That means more screen time and crazy shenanigans for Jeff and Shauna's teenage daughter. Desjardins had a recurring role on the show in the previous two seasons.
This great news comes just days after the announcement of the official release date for Yellowjackets season 3. After a terribly long wait, the highly anticipated third season will land on Paramount+ with its first two episodes on Feb. 14, 2025. However, you'll only be able to watch the series on the streaming service if you have the Paramount+ with Showtime plan. You also have the option to watch it on Showtime when it has its on-air debut on Feb. 16, 2025.
Unlike season 2, which had only nine episodes, season 3 copies season 1's episode count and will have a total of 10 episodes.

Exclusive: There will be a change in the credits for the upcoming third season of Yellowjackets. Sarah Desjardins, who has recurred on the series since Season 1 as Shauna’s (Melanie Lynskey) daughter Callie, will be seen in an expanded role following a promotion to series regular. Desjardins was quietly elevated before production began on Season 3.
Callie has a strained relationship with Shauna, in particular, and Shauna’s husband Jeff.
Created by Ashley Lyle and Bart Nickerson, Yellowjackets is the saga of a team of talented high school girls soccer players who become the (un)lucky survivors of a plane crash deep in the remote northern wilderness. The series chronicles their descent from a complicated but thriving team to savage clans, while also tracking the lives they’ve attempted to piece back together nearly 25 years later, proving that the past is never really past and what began out in the wilderness is far from over.

Yellowjackets: "Eat Your Heart Out" As Paramount+ Announces Season 3 Premiere Date With First Teaser
It might be to rethink any early Valentine's Day plans you might have made.
Showtime and Paramount+ (via FearHQ.com) has announced that the third season of supernatural(?) survival drama Yellowjackets will arrive with a two-episode premiere on February 14th, 2025, and we have a brief teaser promo featuring our first look at some footage.
The quick shots are about as cryptic and creepy as you'd expect, and don't exactly reveal any new season 3 plot details.
In the shocking season 2 finale, Natalie (Juliette Lewis) ended up being killed in a cruel twist of fate when she was stabbed by Misty's (Christina Ricci) lethal dose of phenobarbital. The needle was meant for Lottie's follower Lisa (Nicole Maines), who Natalie had bonded with over the past few episodes and decided to act in a self-sacrificial attempt to save.

The double-trouble winter release will be available through streaming and on-demand for Paramount+ subscribers via the Showtime add-on just in time for Valentine’s Day. They’ll then premiere on-air through the premium cable network the night of Sunday, February 16.

2024 is nearly over and while we have seen some brilliant horror films come out this year I don’t think it has been such a great year for the genre. With most horror films flopping at the box office and the dreaded Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey sequel coming out it all felt wrong. But don’t worry because I have picked out the 18 best horror films that have come out this year. I haven’t ranked the films in the article and I will update the list as more films come out.

Like Mr. Reed, the villain at the center of their A24 horror thriller Heretic, filmmakers Scott Beck and Bryan Woods were preoccupied with an experiment.
An embodiment of lifelong existential questions and concerns, their latest project posed an unusual question: Is it possible to turn a three-person dialectic on faith, within a contained setting, into a thrill ride, the kind of cinematic experience that is essential theatrical viewing?
Released on November 8, Heretic watches as Sisters Paxton (Chloe East) and Barnes (Sophie Thatcher), a pair of Mormon missionaries, are lured into the home of the reclusive Reed (Hugh Grant), where a sinister test of faith and the nature of belief turns into a fight for their lives.
For Beck and Woods, Heretic is something of a rebellion against a filmmaking culture of “complacency” — a world in which it’s easier than ever for art to become just more “white noise.” An Iowa-based duo,...

The horror movie Heretic is one of the most prominent depictions of Mormonism in popular culture. One of the stars of the film was once a Mormon. Another was friends with Mormon missionaries while the movie was being filmed.
How ‘Heretic’ tried to explore Mormonism in an authentic way
Heretic is about a pair of Mormon missionaries: Sister Barnes (played by Sophie Thatcher) and Sister Paxton (played by Chloe East) who get kidnapped by a creep named Mr. Reed. Unlike other religious horror movies like Rosemary’s Baby or The Exorcist, Heretic contains a lot of dialog about religion and its role in society. While the film critiques all the major Abrahamic religions, Hinduism, Buddhism, and various ancient paganisms, it saves most of its ire for Mormonism. Interestingly, the film isn’t exactly coming from outsiders.
The movie was directed by A Quiet Place writers Scott Beck and Bryan Woods. During a 2024 interview with GQ,...

The A24 horror film Heretic, from the writing and directing duo of Scott Beck and Bryan Woods, received a wide theatrical release last week, and so far has made about $16 million at the global box office. The budget came in under $10 million, so it’s doing okay – and Beck and Woods have ideas for follow-up films that wouldn’t be direct sequels, but “spiritual sequels.”
Hugh Grant – whose credits include Notting Hill, Love Actually, Wonka, and Unfrosted – stars in Heretic, which has the following synopsis: Two young missionaries are forced to prove their faith when they knock on the wrong door and are greeted by a diabolical Mr. Reed (Grant), becoming ensnared in his deadly game of cat-and-mouse. Grant is joined in the cast of Heretic by Chloe East (The Fabelmans) and Sophie Thatcher (Yellowjackets) as the missionaries. (You can watch our interviews with them Here.) Grant hasn’t done much horror in his career,...

It is perfect movie weather though, and we have some hot ones for you this month. We have films from heavy hitters like Steve McQueen and Pablo Larraín, and some exciting sophomore features from the likes of Mati Diop and Jessie Eisenberg. Take a look what this month has to offer below:

One of the primary rules of horror movie survival, "Never talk to strangers," is ingeniously ignored by two young women in A24's newest psychological thriller, "Heretic." A dark, stormy night and a house shrouded in dense foliage are two cinematic warning signs that scream, "Don't go into that house." However, for two young missionaries from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, talking to strangers is essential to spreading the good word of their church. Writer-directors Scott Beck and Bryan Woods compose a film that is slim on the usual jump scares that often define religious horror stories but instead invests in thought-provoking, tension-building conversations about faith.
The film begins in small-town America with Sister Paxton (Chloe East) and Sister Barnes (Sophie Thatcher) charmingly trading innocuous chatter about all things holy and otherwise. The two women, proud and motivated to share the lessons of their congregation, venture at...

Evan Mock and Chloe East have been swept up by Headhunters.
The model and Gossip Girl star and Heretic breakout are set to join Kevin Costner and Daniel Zovatto on the film, due to start shooting January. Accomplished cinematographer Steven Holleran will make his feature directorial debut on the film based on an idea he originated. He and Costner then collaborated on the script, which is described as a mashup combining the “kinetic energy of surf culture with the suspense of horror.”
Headhunters casts Costner as Lazer, a washed-up American ex-pat with a mysterious past who finds himself living in Bali, Indonesia. Lazer recruits a group of surfers led by Bima, a local photographer, on a journey to an uncharted island to pioneer a “perfect wave.” To their surprise, the island is home to an ancient tribe of headhunters guarding the land at all costs. “What ensues is an adventure...
