While Izabel Pakzad’s “Find Your Friends” joins Hollywood’s storied history of films inspired by true events, the events in question are rarely this jaw-dropping.
Years ago, Pakzad and her friends had planned a “wild girls trip” in Joshua Tree. Although their arrival had been met with “strange interactions with men” in and around their Airbnb, they focused on partying and had a good time. Pakzad’s last night at the house was cut short as she had to head back to L.A. for a meeting the next day, yet something unforgettable happened before she could leave town.
“It was 1:30 or 2 in the morning,” she says. “I had one other girlfriend come with me, and we got into the car. The Airbnb was on a dead end, of course. So you pull out of the driveway, and there’s this green Mustang that’s waiting outside on the street.

We are only three days into Fantasia 2025, and we may already have one of the festival’s most controversial selections in director Izabel Pakzad’s harrowing revenge thriller, Find Your Friends. When a squad of Gen Z besties make the trek out to Joshua Tree for a drug fueled girls trip, things go pear-shaped almost immediately as pressures from within and without take their toll. Amber (Helena Howard) isn’t exactly the leader of the group, but she is the focus. Having recently endured a drunken sexual assault at a boat party, her guard is way up while her friends blaze a hedonistic trail through the southwest. As she makes her first hesitant steps into their fantasies, the group begins to fracture when what was supposed to...

Do you fancy a cinematic meditation on heavy themes like identity and self-discovery? Are you a fan of the surreal and dreamlike world of Twin Peaks? If you answered in the affirmative to both of those prompts, we’re off to a great start. However, I still have one more screening question before I am comfortable making an informed recommendation. Please bear with me.
My final question is this: Are you a fan of ‘90s nostalgia and the iconic output of Nickelodeon circa that pivotal decade? If you are three for three at this point, I am finally comfortable recommending a surreal throwback with which multiple members of the Dread Central team connected.
More specifically, I’m talking about Jane Schoenbrun‘s coming-of-age horror picture I Saw the TV Glow. The film is a surreal mediation on heavy themes that counts the aforementioned references as points of inspiration.

I Saw the TV Glow is one of the best films of 2024, and director Jane Schoenbrun's next project sounds like another must-see. Schoenberg's next film, Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma, was revealed in June 2024 in a profile from The New Yorker, published one month after I Saw the TV Glow hit theaters. While still in the early development stages, Schoenbrun has revealed more details about their upcoming film, which sounds like a worthy follow-up to I Saw the TV Glow and one of the most exciting pitches for an upcoming movie.
Writer Siddhant Adlakha, via Bloody Disgusting, said that during a Q&a, director Schoenbrun described their next film, “Portrait of a Lady on Fire, set in a Friday the 13th sequel." The movie was previously described as a slasher lesbian comedy. Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasama revolves around a director brought on board to...

2024 was a big year for film, with blockbuster hits like Wicked and Gladiator II dominating the box office. However, many independent films also performed well with their worldwide releases, critical responses, and ability to garner substantial social media attention. In fact, many independent films of 2024 have performed well with a wide variety of audiences, becoming mainstream hits in a way indie films have historically not.
For example, MaxXxine and The Substance were theatrical hits, garnering $22 million and $57 million (via Box Office Mojo) in worldwide box office sales respectively. Not to mention, films like Jesse Eisenberg's A Real Pain and Sean Baker's Anora are up for major nominations at the Golden Globes and drummed up substantial press attention during festival runs. Positive responses like these demonstrate that indies' commitment to original, bold storytelling resonates with audiences seeking out something fresh.

Some movies are designed to leave you feeling interrupted, intentionally cutting to credits before providing the resolution you've been craving for the last two hours. Others, especially when it comes to sci-fi, fantasy, and horror, drive their narratives and mythologies toward a specific thematic landing zone, punching it through the screen to in the final moments. "I Saw the TV Glow" is somewhere in the middle — a millennial-retro, aesthetically driven horror movie that blends heartfelt genre homage with heart-wrenching gender allegory.
If you've seen the film, you may have walked out of the theater at the end, or out of your living room, feeling like the air had been sucked straight out of you. Suffocation is a major idea throughout "I Saw the TV Glow," and it underlines the resounding horror of the ending. At the same time, the film's final moments aren't all terror. A24's low-budget horror film, I Saw the TV Glow, underperformed at the box office back in May, despite receiving generally positive reviews from critics. However, after landing on Max the film is picking up steam on the streaming charts, contending with some of the year's most popular films.
I Saw the TV Glow hit theaters on May 17 after debuting at the Sundance Film Festival in January, and the film couldn't quite garner enough attention to be considered a financial success. The film grossed $5.3 million on a reported budget of $10 million, which by no means is a major blow to A24, but a bit disappointing considering the film was met with a decent amount of praise from critics and audiences. I Saw the TV Glow currently holds an 84% on Rotten Tomatoes from critics, with a 71% score from audiences. The film also holds a pretty strong score of 3.6 out of 5 on Letterboxd.

The acclaimed psychological horror film concerns a pair of wayward souls who bond over their mutual love of a strange TV show that captured their imagination, holding it hostage for generations as they come of age, mature, and find meaning in their boring daily lives.
While not especially scary in a traditional horror movie sense, I Saw the TV Glow is an unsettling trip down memory lane that could very well trigger a generation of '90s millennials who struggled with an abusive homelife, found it difficult to connect with others, battled loneliness and isolation, and found mutual meaning in quirky, off-beat media. With a dour, melancholic tone and sad despair, I Saw the TV Glow speaks to a subset...

Defined by its haunting atmosphere and '90s nostalgia, I Saw the TV Glow has viewers wondering where the A24 movie was filmed. Written and directed by Jane Schoenbrun (We're All Going to the World's Fair), I Saw the TV Glow centers on teenagers Owen (Justice Smith) and Maddy (Brigette Lundy-Paine), outsiders who bond over their love of a cult classic supernatural TV series, The Pink Opaque. As they navigate the crushing conformity of suburbia, Owen and Maddy find refuge in the weekly stories of The Pink Opaque and its psychically connected leads, Isabel (Helena Howard) and Tara (Lindsey Jordan).
Although I Saw the TV Glow's cast of characters is slight, Owen and Maddy's stories carry huge emotional weight. On the surface, the movie might be about the two teens' pop-cultural obsession, but, through the TV series, they are able to understand their identities and queerness. With a searing-yet-hopeful ending,...

Updated: Italian producer Andrea Iervolino — whose credits include Michael Mann’s “Ferrari,” the Johnny Depp-starrer “Waiting for the Barbarians” and “Lamborghini: The Man Behind the Legend” — has parted ways with business partner Monika Bacardi and is launching a new film and TV outfit called The Andrea Iervolino Company.
Iervolino and Bacardi were partners in Ilbe, the studio they co-founded and jointly ran for 13 years.
“With the launch of Taic, Iervolino has stepped down as president and CEO of Ilbe, the studio he co-founded and ran for the last decade, to focus on Taic,” Iervolino said in a statement. “He will remain available in a non-exclusive capacity to assist Ilbe with the transition of a new CEO.”
No reason for the falling out between Iervolino and Bacardi was provided in the statement.

With the nostalgic love for teen dramas like Gossip Girl, Pretty Little Liars and The Vampire Diaries, the teen drama genre has been struggling when it comes to newer entries. While the early 2000s to mid-2010s had several long-running, beloved teen dramas, the streaming era has led to a rut for the genre, with most teen-centered shows struggling to find their footing. Despite several teen dramas premiering in the last five years, none have managed to maintain the audiences of their predecessors.
A big reason many prefer to rewatch old teen dramas than give newer shows a chance is the inevitable chance of an early cancelation. Several teen dramas, new and old, are canceled way too soon, not being given the chance to build up an audience over time. Some of these shows deserved a longer run, as they couldve had the potential to become a classic of the teen drama genre.

The A24 horror movie I Saw the TV Glow and the dystopian thriller Civil War, two of the year's most acclaimed films, will land on HBO and Max in September. The two join the network, and its streaming counterpart, as part of a multiyear deal with A24, under which new theatrical films from the celebrated production company will run exclusively on HBO and Cinemax and stream only on Max.
Jane Schoenbrun's I Saw the TV Glow accomplished what horror films often don't: a generally positive reception from critics and audiences alike. Eerie and nostalgic, the film centers on Owen (Justice Smith), a teenager just trying to make it through life in the suburbs, when his classmate Maddy (portrayed by Brigette Lundy-Paine) introduces him to a mysterious late-night TV show a vision of a supernatural world beneath their own. In the pale glow of the television, Owen's view of reality begins to crack.

The stories we encounter when we’re young can sometimes speak to us so deeply that they envelop us. These stories can be something we don’t just experience, but become. Or, perhaps, they lead us to become ourselves if we’re brave enough to let them. In this awe-inspiringly original film, writer and director Jane Schoenbrun captures the intimacy of this experience while telling their own semi-autobiographical queer story like no-one else could.
It’s the late 1990s, Bill Clinton’s America. Lonely 12-year-old Owen (Ian Foreman) gravitates towards fellow outcast Maddy (Brigette Lundy-Paine). They’re both irrevocably drawn to ‘The Pink Opaque’, a TV show about two teenage girls with a telepathic connection who fight the forces of evil every week. With its magenta glow, the screen acts as a window to a world that feels more real than their own, a place to retreat to from their oppressive home lives.

Jane Schoenbrun's audacious, original "I Saw The TV Glow" mesmerized audiences at its Sundance Film Festival debut earlier this year and was given a theatrical release by the folks at A24 last month, but according to The-Numbers, that release only made its way to 469 theaters across North America. Compared to the thousands of theaters that play big movies like "The Fall Guy" or "Inside Out 2," it's safe to guess there are likely a lot of folks who were interested in seeing "I Saw The TV Glow," but it simply wasn't playing in a theater near them. Thankfully, the movie is now available to watch at home digitally, so hopefully the folks who are curious about it will be able to track it down and let it wash over them.
