Andrew Lloyd Webber Muscial 'Cats' Leaves Streaming on Nexflix in January
Image
Try not to cry folks, but a movie many call one of the worst films of all-time is leaving Netflix in January. That means your days are numbered to relive the magic of a certain film based on an Andrew Lloyd Webber musical which features the likes of Taylor Swift in its cast. Send those streaming numbers up guys before this feline frenzy is no longer able to be watched, admired and dissected on their platform.

As hard as this is to announce, the 2019 big screen adaptation of the musical Cats is leaving Netflix very soon. 2024 has been an incredible year for musicals, thanks mostly to the soaring box office of Wicked - Part One. However, 2019 was a very different story for this big screen Broadway adaptation. There is likely an audience for the much-maligned Cats, either from people who found those creepy CGI fur effects appealing (I'm sure they're...

All 5 Andrew Lloyd Webber Movie Musicals, Ranked
Image
Composer and impresario Andrew Lloyd Webber is one of the most well-known names in musical theater and, thanks to some notable movie adaptations, he's also known in film circles as well. The London-born Andrew Lloyd Webber began his career collaborating on the Oliver!-inspired musical The Likes of Us with Tim Rice. That musical ended up failing to gain a backer and, after some more attempts to get something off the ground, he finally was able to produce Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, the musical that would launch him into stardom.

Since then, Webber has helped fund and create songs for some of the most recognizable musicals ever, including Jesus Christ Superstar, Cats, The Phantom of the Opera (1986), The Wizard of Oz (2011), and School of Rock (2015). He's won one Academy Award and been nominated three times, gone 3 for 15 at the Grammys, won a Golden Globe, and won 6 Tonys out of 23 nominations.

Cats Pitch Meeting Revisited
Image
The 2019 adaptation of Cats was a critical and commercial failure, despite its star-studded cast. The story of the Broadway musical was not well-suited for the screen, lacking a well-defined world. The decision to blend practical and CGI designs for the actors as cats, including rumored "butthole" versions, partly contributed to the movie's downfall.

With some time now gone since the movie's release, Screen Rant's Pitch Meeting series is looking back at its Cats episode. The 2019 movie musical acted as an adaptation of both the T.S. Eliot poetry collection Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats and the Broadway production of the same name about the eponymous creatures celebrating the arrival of the Jellicle Ball and all vying to be chosen to live a new life in the Heaviside Layer. Despite a star-studded roster of Francesca Hayward, Judi Dench, James Corden, Idris Elba, and Ian McKellen, among many others, the movie was...

Jennifer Hudson Defends Cats: It's Unfortunate That It Was Misunderstood
Image
Cats did not have the warmest reception when it was released (to say the least), but star Jennifer Hudson remains very proud of her work on the controversial movie. Directed by Tom Hooper and based on the popular stage musical of the same name, Cats features an impressive ensemble cast as singing humanoid cats covered in digitally added fur. In part due to the design of the characters, Cats was a box office bomb that was universally panned by critics.

As one of the stars of Cats, Jennifer Hudson was asked about the movie's reception in a recent interview with Total Film. For her part, she feels that the movie is probably just ahead of its time, believing that people will look back at Cats much more fondly in the future. Refusing to see the movie's failures as an embarrassment, Hudson also explains how she remains proud and grateful for...

Audrey Review: Accentuating the Compassionate Soul of a Cinematic Icon
Despite her status as one of the most iconic movie stars in history, one can’t help but root for the girl at the center of Audrey, who dreams of nothing more than to find peace and love. The girl is, of course, Audrey Hepburn, a movie star from a time when pictures were made around personas, and a change of hairstyle could easily turn into a global phenomenon. Hepburn’s name conjures visions of diamonds, sophistication, and effortless grace. Perhaps even the girl who had it all if we want to navigate in tropes, but what Helena Coan’s documentary achieves is that it doesn’t need sensationalism or shock to make us recognize ourselves in a figure who was truly larger than life. On the screen perhaps.

With a height of 5’7 and weighing a little over 100 lbs. Hepburn’s waifish look defied what Hollywood considered the ideal female heroine.

Jason Derulo Truly Believed Cats Was Going to Change the World
Image
Most famous musicians sooner or later toy with the prospect of an acting career. Some, like Zendaya and Lady Gaga, are even able to win awards as actors. For Jason Derulo, being offered the role of Rum Tum Tugger in 2019's movie adaptation of Andrew Lloyd Webber's 1981 stage musical Cats seemed like the perfect realization of that dream, allowing him to sing and dance as well as act in his debut role, in a movie that had the potential to change the world, as Derulo explained.

"For the longest time, I was trying to figure out what's the perfect first role. Cats checked all the boxes. You can't get a more star-studded cast, you don't get a more respected director than an Oscar winner, and Rum Tum Tugger is a legacy role, a standout character in a classic musical."

Derulo's reasoning is hard to argue with. The movie adaption...

Razzie Awards Halted By City Coronavirus Restrictions, As Producers Unsure Whether To Cancel Or Postpone
Judi Dench, Ian McKellen, James Corden, Idris Elba, Jennifer Hudson, Rebel Wilson, Taylor Swift, Jason Derulo, and Francesca Hayward in Cats (2019)
The Razzie Awards ceremony, the Golden Raspberry Foundation’s annual skewering of the worst in cinema, was scheduled for tonight at the Barnsdall Theatre in Los Angeles. But the event is either “cancelled/postponed,” according to a statement from the producers.

The reason? “Because the Mayor of Los Angeles shut down all city-owned venues where more than 50 people could gather, including our site, The Barnsdall Theatre,” said the statement from John Wilson, co-founder of the awards. “Without a hall, we could not proceed with the show. But we are hoping to have something to disseminate by tonight – Perhaps even by what had been our original “curtain time” of 8 p.m. tonight. Obviously, if there is no live show, there is nothing to be streamed, either.”

Judi Dench Hasn’t Seen ‘Cats’ – But She’s Amused by Her Razzie Nom for Worst Supporting Actress
Judi Dench at an event for The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel (2011)
Judi Dench has won an Oscar (and received seven nominations), picked up two Golden Globe statuettes, received three Emmy nominations and collected 11 BAFTA Awards — and now one Golden Raspberry Awards nod for her performance in the critically panned “Cats.”

During an interview with BBC Radio 4’s Front Row on Thursday, host John Wilson informed the legendary British actress of her Razzie nomination for Worst Supporting Actress for playing the part of Old Deuteronomy in Tom Hooper’s recent live-action adaptation of the classic Andrew Lloyd Webber musical.

“Worst Supporting Actor? Oh, am I? Oh, very, very good,” Dench said, laughing. “As the Worst Supporting Actor? Oh, well, that would be good.”

2020 Razzie Awards odds in all 11 categories: ‘Cats’ predicted to sweep, but not everything
Andrew Lloyd Webber
“Cats” will sweep the 2020 Razzie Awards. That’s according to the combined predictions of well over 1,000 Gold Derby users who have placed their bets here in our predictions center. But it won’t quite be a clean sweep. Scroll down for our complete forecasts in all 11 categories, listed in order of their racetrack odds (our projected winners are highlighted in gold).

SEERazzies: Every Worst Picture Winner 1981 to Today

The feline musical, based on the Andrew Lloyd Webber stage production, was not greeted nearly as well on the big screen as it was on Broadway, where it won seven Tonys including Best Musical for its original run. Despite its strong pedigree (including direction by “The King’s Speech” Oscar winner Tom Hooper), the film’s unsettling character design was greeted with bafflement at the first sign of the trailer, and then the film was released in December to negative reviews and poor box office.

Judi Dench, Ian McKellen, James Corden, Idris Elba, Jennifer Hudson, Rebel Wilson, Taylor Swift, Jason Derulo, and Francesca Hayward in Cats (2019)
“Cats” looks like it’ll dominate the Razzie Awards this weekend, but there’s one category where it will probably be mercifully passed over: Worst Actress. The movie musical’s leading lady, newcomer Francesca Hayward, will be spared the ignominy of a win at these kudos. According to the combined predictions of Gold Derby users, Hilary Duff will win for playing the title role in “The Haunting of Sharon Tate” instead.

SEERazzies: Every Worst Picture Winner 1981 to Today

As of this writing Duff gets leading odds of 17/5 for playing the real-life film actress, who was the victim of a horrific murder by the Manson Family in 1969. That shocking crime was also the subject of an Oscar-winning film this year, “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” but this take was met with almost universal derision, scoring 8 out of 100 on MetaCritic and 19% freshness on Rotten Tomatoes for what Rt describes as an...

‘Cats,’ ‘Madea’ and ‘Rambo’ Top Razzie Nominations

The Razzie nominations are out and Cats, A Madea Family Funeral, and Rambo: Last Blood cleaned up.

The Golden Raspberry Foundation announced its picks for 2019’s worst achievements in film, a day before the Academy Awards honor the industry’s best.

Cats, which the Razzie folks described as a “widely derided feline flop,” picked up eight nods. A Madea Family Funeral and Rambo: Last Blood also received eight nominations. All three films landed in the worst picture category.

Tyler Perry, who wrote, produced, directed and played four roles in A Madea Family Funeral, received multiple nods — worst screenplay, worst actress, worst screen combo, and two worst supporting actor nominations.

The Razzie Award winners are usually announced the day before the Oscars. But according to the Golden Raspberry Foundation, the schedule was changed this year due to the Oscar ceremony being moved up. The Razzie Awards date will be announced later.

Paw performance: Cats dominates Razzie nominations
British actors including Judi Dench and James Corden among worst-actor nominees

The widely panned movie musical Cats and four of its stars have been nominated for Razzie awards, an annual ritual that lampoons the worst of cinema.

James Corden, Judi Dench, Rebel Wilson and Francesca Hayward received Razzie acting nominations for their Cats roles, in which they wore digitally created fur. Oscar winner Dench was singled out for “looking suspiciously similar to the Cowardly Lion from Wizard of Oz”, organisers said in a statement announcing the nominees.

The 40th annual Razzie nominations: ‘Cats’ scratches up 8 hisses including 4 acting bids and Worst Picture
Judi Dench, Ian McKellen, James Corden, Idris Elba, Jennifer Hudson, Rebel Wilson, Taylor Swift, Jason Derulo, and Francesca Hayward in Cats (2019)
You knew this was coming. The 40th annual Golden Raspberry Awards dishonored the cinematic feline felony known as”Cats” with eight nominations, including one for no less than Dame Judi Dench herself. In fact, the organization even felt the need to describe her Old Deuteronomy as looking suspiciously similar to the Cowardly Lion from “The Wizard of Oz.” Somewhere, Bert Lahr is crying.

But incredibly, there were two other 2019 releases that proved egregious enough to also be pelted with eight nominations: Sylvester Stallone‘s “Rambo: Last Blood” and Tyler Perry‘s 12th and purportedly last appearance in a wig and dress, “A Medea Family Funeral.”

As per usual, the competitors for disgraced excellence were announced on the eve of the Academy Awards, which airs live on ABC on Sunday. The cheeky Razzies also had the nerve to slap around two other Oscars winners besides Dame Judi: Anne Hathaway, up for both “The Hustle” and “Serenity,...

‘Cats,’ ‘Rambo: Last Blood,’ Final ‘Madea’ Film Top Razzie Nominations for Worst Movies of 2019
Tom Hooper
Tom Hooper’s movie musical “Cats,” Sylvester Stallone’s “Rambo: Last Blood,” and Tyler Perry’s “A Madea Family Funeral” topped this year’s nominations list for the worst movies and performances of 2019, scoring eight nominations a piece.

Other “honorees” on this year’s list include the remake of “Hellboy” starring David Harbour, John Travolta in the thriller “The Fanatic” and the James Franco-directed period drama “Zeroville.”

The Razzies are now in their 40th year, and the group typically announces its nominees a day ahead of the Oscar nominations. But with the Oscars moving to its earliest date ever, it also pushed back the Razzies, which are only just announcing the nominees list. The awards ceremony for the winners will be announced at a later date.

Cats May Be Weird But Taylor Swift Has No Complaints About It
Judi Dench, Ian McKellen, James Corden, Idris Elba, Jennifer Hudson, Rebel Wilson, Taylor Swift, Jason Derulo, and Francesca Hayward in Cats (2019)
It's no secret that Cats quickly became a bomb of legendary proportions, both critically and commercially last year. Be that as it may, Taylor Swift has no complaints about making the movie. Even though she is a bit shy about handing out any accolades for the Broadway adaptation, going so far as to call it a weird-ass movie.

Taylor Swift is primarily known as a Grammy-winning, chart-topping pop star, but she's dabbled in acting throughout her career. Some of her other credits include The Giver and The Lorax. With Cats, it seemed she would be putting all of her talents to use in one project; a big-budget adaptation of one of the most successful Broadway musicals of all time. Yet, the movie wound up becoming the butt of quite a few jokes online and inspired quite a few interesting stories about people getting high on drugs and going to see it.

Cats Movie review: Critics Review, Rating, Cast and Crew
This musical fantasy is an adaptation of the stage musical of the same name by Andrew Lloyd Webber which in turn had originated from Ts Elliot's poetry collection, "Old Possum's Book Of Practical Cats" that was released in 1939.

Elliot's poetry was interesting and so was Webber's stage musical, but Tom Hooper's big screen adaptation, leaves a lot to be desired.

The narrative begins on a sarcastic note with a variety of felines singing in an alley, just off a darken London Square:

Are you blind when you're born?

Can you see in the dark?

Can you look at a king?

Would you sit on his throne?

Can you say of your bite

That it's worse than your bark?

Are you cock of the walk

When you're walking alone?

This certainly makes you sit upright to get the messages right.

Just then, Victoria (Francesca Hayward), a beautiful white cat is...

‘Cats’ Star James Corden Hasn’t Seen The Film – But He Heard “It’s Terrible”
James Corden
James Corden says he still hasn’t seen Cats, but he’s heard a thing or two about his new movie and it’s not good.

The British comedian made the admission Monday in a BBC Radio 2 interview, according to the UK’s Independent.

“I haven’t seen it, but I’ve heard it’s terrible,” Corden told host Zoe Ball. “I’ll catch it one day, I imagine.”

Ball responded, “The reviews have been a bit harsh.”

The Late Late Show host plays Bustopher Jones in Tom Hooper’s adaptation of the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical.

The Universal-Working Title film also stars Taylor Swift, Jennifer Hudson, Francesca Hayward, Idris Elba, Judi Dench, Ian McKellen, Rebel Wilson, and Jason Derulo.

The movie musical cost $100 million to produce, but earned a dismal $6.5 million during its opening weekend, well below its $10 million to $15 million projection.

Universal just took the unusual...

Cats Review: Ignore the Haters, Enjoy the Music and Dancing
Tom Hooper
Director Tom Hooper has lumps of coal filling his Christmas stocking. His feature adaptation of Cats, Andrew Lloyd Webber's hit Broadway musical, has been treated like a lost stray. The film has unfairly received withering criticism. The poor feline ensemble sits at a paltry 17% on the aggregate website Rotten Tomatoes. Negativity towards the film grew after an admittedly bad trailer. The pile on resulting in a dismal opening box office of $6.2M. I'm here to defend Cats. Ignore the barrage of haters. Cats is not litter box material. If you liked the musical, you will like the film. If you appreciate incredible choreography, classic songs like "Memory", and whimsical performances from an all-star cast, Cats is an enjoyable Holiday treat.

Cats has a simple narrative. The plot is based on a 1939 book of poetry by T.S Elliot, "Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats." A frightened Kitten, Victoria, played...

Andrew Lloyd Webber
I voluntarily went to see ‘Cats’ –and while it is far from purr-fect, it’s not a total cinematic cat-astrophe
Andrew Lloyd Webber
I cringed a bit when I read the social media reactions to the trailer for the big-screen adaptation of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s “Cats” last summer. I, for one, was captivated by director Tom Hooper‘s approach to 2012’s “Les Miserables,” another long-running, sung-through Broadway show. He enlisted live singing, focused on bringing out the emotions in the material, stacked the acting deck with big name stars and gave Anne Hathaway an Oscar-winning moment by having her own hair chopped to bits on camera as she wept through the production’s signature song “I Dreamed a Dream.”

But that ain’t “Cats.” If you found it hard to accept the de-aging technology used on the cast in “The Irishman,” just wait until you try to re-adjust your reality into seeing the likes of gorgeous Idris Elba as the evil Macavity being kind of naked but also encased in sleek black fur.

Universal sends updated version of ‘Cats’ to theatres
Director had been working on effects shots up until film’s premiere

Universal Pictures has sent an updated version of its new musical Cats to exhibitors in North America after director Tom Hooper wanted to tweak the effects.

The studio told theatres on Friday about the move and said the updated version would be ready by Sunday for theatre operators that could access a satellite server, and by Tuesday via hard drive for others.

It is an unusual move that means theatres that played one version of the film on opening day Friday will screen a tweaked version by early next week at the latest.

‘Cats’ Poor Reception Prompts Universal to Send an ‘Improved,’ Updated Version to Theaters
Judi Dench, Ian McKellen, James Corden, Idris Elba, Jennifer Hudson, Rebel Wilson, Taylor Swift, Jason Derulo, and Francesca Hayward in Cats (2019)
After Universal Pictures’ new film “Cats” was clawed and torn to shreds by critics last week, the studio told movie theaters on Friday that it would be sending a new version of the film with “some improved visual effects.”

The move of replacing a film already in theaters with an “improved” version is unheard of But according to a copy of a memo obtained by The Hollywood Reporter, director Tom Hooper has been upfront about the fact that he barely finished the CGI on the film in time for the world premiere in New York City last week, and the switch is at his request.

Critics have disparaged “Cats,” which stars Francesca Hayward, Taylor Swift, Judi Dench, Jennifer Hudson and Idris Elba, among others. The film received a C+ CinemaScore and was slapped with a 19% critics rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

The updated film is expected to be available for cinemas to download on Sunday via a satellite server, but for exhibitors that don’t have access to the server, they are expected to receive a hard drive by Tuesday, according to Universal. The studio is asking that theaters replace the current print of Cats as soon as possible.

Inside the Very Real Anthropomorphic Struggles of the ‘Cats’ Cast
Judi Dench, Ian McKellen, James Corden, Idris Elba, Jennifer Hudson, Rebel Wilson, Taylor Swift, Jason Derulo, and Francesca Hayward in Cats (2019)
Whether you find the titular characters in Tom Hooper’s live action adaptation of “Cats” adorable or horrifying, the truth is that a lot of work went into the singing and dancing creatures. The director and his team pioneered a new “digital fur technology” that merged footage of the actors on the film’s set with VFX, instead of the usual motion capture method that’s been employed in movies like “Planet of the Apes,” and “Avatar.” Here the actors become the cats without losing any trace of their on-set performance.

Hooper’s cats have long twitching tails and ears that react emotionally. The technology, despite helping to create an uncanny valley of cat-humans, is impressively detailed, particularly when you realize that the actors were dressed in tight, green suits during filming. To allow VFX to take over during post-production, the cast wore motion capture suits and face dots, which...

Cats – Review
Judi Dench as Old Deuteronomy in “Cats,” co-written and directed by Tom Hooper.

Having seen the trailer for Cats, I must admit I approached the film with some trepidation. The highly-touted CGI effects to make humans catlike actually looked unsettling rather than magical. The good news is the effect is much less disturbing in the film itself. With music by Andrew Lloyd Weber, Cats is one of the longest-running musicals of all time, so has plenty of fans.

The musical debuted in London in 1988 and it is credited with starting the “mega-musical” craze. Along with innovative staging, it featured groundbreaking costumes, makeup, and choreography that turned dancers and singers into cat-like humans, much to the delight of audience, spawning a host of similar effects in stage shows. While I’m not personal a fan of musicals myself but I did enjoy T.S. Eliot’s classic funny quirky book of poems,...

Taylor Swift Explains Her ‘Cats’ Transformation: Hissing, Barefoot Crawling and Jellicle School
Taylor Swift at an event for 2019 Golden Globe Awards (2019)
Taylor Swift attended “cat school” to learn what Jellicles can and Jellicles do. To prepare for “Cats,” the big-screen adaptation of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s 1981 musical, Swift and her co-stars enrolled in classes to master the movements of their four-legged characters. In the film, Swift plays Bombalurina, a rabble-rousing outsider who sprinkles catnip over the Jellicle ball.

Swift didn’t phone (or meow) in her performance in “Cats,” starring Idris Elba, Jennifer Hudson, Jason Derulo, Ian McKellen and Judi Dench. She wanted to be ready for her big number, “Macavity,” and in case Lloyd Webber enlisted her to write a new song for the movie. When he did, their collaboration was fast and easy, in the form of “Beautiful Ghosts,” a confessional ballad performed by the stray cat Victoria (Francesca Hayward) that serves as a bookend to “Memory,” the production’s signature song (belted out by Hudson).

On the morning...

It's not easy being a cat!  The cast of the Cats film had to undergo serious training for their roles, and one of the most talked about experiences has been the fact that they all went through "cat school" to learn how to be cats. Now, thanks to James Corden and the power of The Late Late Show, we finally get a sneak peek into what that entailed.  The host rallied some of the members of the film including Taylor Swift, Jennifer Hudson, Jason Derulo, Rebel Wilson, Francesca Hayward and director Tom Hooper for a special lesson in being a cat. "Today, each of you will be put through vigorous training to ensure you give the most cat-like performance in the film. One of you will be...

Distributors hold off releases as ’Star Wars’ prepares to dominate.

Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker receives its long-anticipated release at the UK box office this weekend, prompting most other distributors to step back and avoid the force of the Disney juggernaut.

The fantasy epic is billed as an end to the nine-movie “Skywalker saga” that began with the original Star Wars in 1977 and promises audiences the return of classic characters as well as answers to lingering questions in a bid to maximize box office.

But it may struggle to match the opening of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which...

Attention, moviegoers searching for the worst movie of the year: We have a late-breaking winner. “Cats” will be released in theaters on Friday, and what better way to celebrate than with a rendition of “Memory” featuring the cast of the movie — and tiny instruments that look like they were found in an alley somewhere?

Taylor Swift, Jennifer Hudson, Francesca Hayward, Jason Derulo, and James Corden each sang a verse of the iconic song by Andrew Lloyd Webber on Wednesday night’s episode of “The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon.” Oh yeah, and Fallon sang a verse too with complete seriousness and without laughing.

Sadly, Judi Dench, Ian McKellen, Idris Elba and Rebel Wilson didn’t seem to have gotten the memo.

“Cats” Is Nearly Unwatchable And Hisses At Good Taste
Meow. Well, I suppose the appropriate term here is woof. Cats, the adaptation of the smash Broadway musical, is a real dog. When it’s not alternating between being incomprehensible and nonsensical in terms of its plot, the execution of the questionable premise is at best unfinished, and at worst borderline inept. Whatever charms the stage play contains are lost here in an orgy of terrible effects, bizarre designs, and a sense that this is all just plain wrong. Anyone hoping that this would avoid disaster and be either fun bad or so bad it’s good, well, I have bad news. This film is just plain bad, easily one of the worst of 2019. The movie is, obviously, an adaptation of the Broadway musical of the same name. It follows a group of street cats known as the Jellicles on a very special night. When a new stray named Victoria (Francesca Hayward) stumbles upon them,...

‘Cats’ Film Review: Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Feline Fantasy Musical Becomes a Garish Hairball
Andrew Lloyd Webber
The film of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s “Cats” arrives without so much buzz as hisses thanks to a trailer released back in July which seemed to horrify more than to suggest a beloved fantasy musical that has, according to provided production information, been staged for over 81 million people in more than 50 countries and in 19 languages since its London premiere in 1981.

In its original theatrical presentation, “Cats” was weird, yes, but also an admirably immersive, intimate blend of junkyard pizzazz, busy makeup, leg warmers, T.S. Eliot rhymes and Webber earworms that, in its nonsensical Jellicle-osity, added up to something reasonably transportive. It never purred, but it pranced, preened and projected enough to be cat-video distracting, even as it augured decades of stage musicals that favored the flashy over the finely tuned.

But Tom Hooper’s jarring fever dream of a spectacle is like something that escaped from Dr. Moreau’s creature...

‘Cats’ Review: Tom Hooper’s Feline Musical Is an Absurd and Exuberant Mess
Tom Hooper
Tom Hooper’s 2019 adaptation of “Cats” unfolds as an absurd and frequently nonsensical array of light and color, with actors bathed in ill-conceived CGI fur against a similarly invented London backdrop. Fans of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Broadway blockbuster, and anyone familiar with the movie’s viral trailer that stoked excitement and horror in equal measures, will know that sounds about right.

Hooper’s “Cats” adaptation delivers on those expectations and then some, which makes it a fascinating mess of exuberant musical numbers and scintillating digitized sets. Those human-cat terrors already looked ridiculous slinking about a giant junkyard set in body-suits; who thought that closeups would actually improve the show?

But there’s the rub: The argument against “Cats” also makes the case for its existence, because everything ludicrous about the show has been cranked up to 11, with a restless artificial camera and actors so keen on upstaging one another...

Reviews have arrived for Cats, Tom Hooper's film based on the stage musical by Andrew Lloyd-Webber.

As with Lloyd Webber's production, the Universal film features characters from T.S. Eliot's poetry book Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats known as the Jellicle tribe. In the story, a group of felines decide which one of them will ascend to the Heavside Layer and be reborn into a new life.
