His mom's ancestors were some of the founding settlers of the City of Minneapolis, when it was just a fishing village called St. Anthony Main.

He is related to the late Ed Lauter (The Artist, Seabiscuit, Girls Just Want to Have Fun, King Kong) through his maternal grandmother. Ed's mother, Sally, was his grandmother's aunt. He had a large role in Alfred Hitchcock's last film, Family Plot.

He studied classical piano for 5 years with a retired, concert pianist in Minneapolis. His sister studied at the Berklee College of Music.

His ancestry is primarily Irish, Balkan, Scandinavian, Eastern European, and English.

John's great uncle, Tom Millott, was a New York theatre producer and director. Tom was a member of the Director's Unit of The Actors Studio. He was also the assistant stage manager for "The Sound of Music" starring Mary Martin, and served in the same capacity on the actress' legendary 1960 TV production of "Peter Pan".

Won a scholarship to study abroad in Southeast Asia while he was at university. He studied in Vietnam, Cambodia, Hong Kong, and Singapore.
