His parents were Siberian musicians who migrated to Austria. He studied conducting in Vienna. While only in his 20s, he conducted the four operas of Wagner's Ring cycle on successive nights. The Bayreuth Festival booked him, and Berlin's Komische Oper hired him as music director. He is music director of the Bavarian State Opera in Munich.
