How a Hollywood Manager Turned a Spec Home to Special
Image
Though she’d dreamed of owning a Spanish Revival home, there was something about the boxy, modern house that Anonymous Content manager Meredith Rothman couldn’t shake. Maybe it was the floor-to-ceiling windows. Or the abundance of natural light. Or the fact that it was tucked neatly into a canyon in Beverly Hills, conjuring up memories of her childhood home in Bel Air. Rothman asked interior designer Lauren Waters for her thoughts. “I assured her it was a wonderful blank canvas for intriguing furniture and great art,” says Waters.

That advice sealed the deal for Rothman, who tasked Waters with transforming the 2,500-square-foot spec house into a home that would serve as space to unwind, enable her to host the occasional soiree and showcase her burgeoning art collection, which includes works by Analia Saban and John Baldessari, as well as a charcoal drawing by her grandmother Luddie Waters, who was...

The Amy Poehler-directed movie, Moxie, is a fun yet thought-provoking film that focuses on the rampant sexism prevalent in high school. The film focuses on the small ways in which the status quo is built and pushed in high school, from the students to the teachers, the accumulation of which has inevitably led to a culture in which people are not even called out or punished for their bad behavior.

How Netflix’s Moxie Explores Different Reactions to Feminism
Image
Directed by Amy Poehler, glorious coming of age comedy Moxie hit Netflix last week and was a joyful celebration of giving a damn. The movie sees 16-year-old Vivian (Hadley Robinson) inspired by her mum’s (Poehler) former feminist escapades and the misogyny she sees at her school to produce her own Zine (called Moxie) to unite her class mates and try to make a difference.

Sometimes she gets it wrong. Sometimes she hits out at the wrong people. But Vivian and her friends’ determination, hope, doggedness and, sure, moxie, sees real change emerge. It’s funny and vital and an absolute breath of fresh air. Though the film focuses on Vivian, one of the joys of Moxie is that it’s not just Vivian who goes on a journey. Each of the main characters has an arc which explores different kinds of responses to feminism.

Here we break them down.

Moxie review – upbeat defiance wins out in Amy Poehler's rebel girl comedy
A quiet student finds her voice in print, battling everyday sexism at her high school in Poehler’s forthright but fun #MeToo drama

A breezy tale of riot grrrl power passed down from mother to daughter, Amy Poehler’s return to the director’s chair (after 2019’s Wine Country) is a winningly optimistic high-school romp with timely #MeToo-era themes. Adapted by screenwriters Tamara Chestna and Dylan Meyer from the hit YA novel by Jennifer Mathieu, it may lack the depth of Eighth Grade or the punch of Booksmart, but it’s still blessed with enough post-punk energy to raise a smile, several chuckles and the occasional fist-punching cheer.

Hadley Robinson is Vivian, a head-down student (“It’s so nice not to be on anyone’s radar”) voted “most obedient” in the crass list compiled by high-school jocks, grotesquely ranking girls in categories including “best rack” and “most bangable”. Like the majority of her female schoolmates,...

Amy Poehler: Mothers are really funny, complex, interesting characters
Image
Los Angeles, March 6: Actress Amy Poehler, who has directed as well as acted in the new Ott release Moxie, says she ensured the role of a mother was well defined in the film.

The film is about a 16-year-old from a small town who is inspired by her mother's past experiences in the underground punk movement Riot Grrrl and starts a feminist revolution in her high school.

"I can't speak for all parents or all kids. I do think that what was fun about playing this character is that I think mothers in general in films get a little flattened out. The mother's I know are really funny, complex, interesting characters with really rich, full lives," Poehler told Smallzy's Celebrity Small Talk, according to a report in femalefirst.co.uk.

Poehler, who plays the role of Lisa Carter in the film, says, "So, that was really fun, to dig...

Netflix’s ‘Moxie’: Amy Poehler’s New Film Depicts a Teen Girl’s Coming-of-Rage Story
Image
Photo: 'Moxie'/Netflix In the new Netflix film ‘Moxie’, directed by Amy Poehler, high school junior Vivian (Hadley Robinson) becomes fed up with her school’s sexist culture and makes an anonymous zine called Moxie about it. The zine ignites a revolution that begins with acts of solidarity among the students and grows to force the apathetic administration to take notice and eventual action in changing the atmosphere of the high school. Based on the novel of the same name by Jennifer Mathieu, ‘Moxie’ depicts Vivian’s “coming-of-rage story” that may inspire other young women to speak up and speak out. The 7 Best Movies New to Netflix in March 2021
Image
After going all out during an awards season in which the company was uniquely well-situated to run the table, Netflix is rolling into March with a release slate that doesn’t suggest the dawn of spring so much as it does a garage sale. Which isn’t to say that there aren’t any good movies dropping on the platform this month, only that few of them seem poised to make a big splash, and the ones that might (the Eric Andre prank comedy “Bad Trip” comes to mind) haven’t been made available to critics yet. That’s also true of the many international titles that will be made available to stream over the next few weeks, some of which seem promising (we have our eyes on the Olga Kurylenko “Taken” riff “Sentinelle”), but none of which have made an impression on the festival circuit.

‘Moxie’ Review: Amy Poehler Introduces Feminist Thinking to a Generation That Might Not Need It
Image
Blame suburban life: Former riot grrl Lisa (Amy Poehler) has mellowed since her days as a patriarchy-smashing punk-rock princess. She’s raised her only child, the sweet-natured Vivian (Hadley Robinson), on a steady diet of Bikini Kill lyrics and feminist bon mots, but Viv has never felt the call to tear down the status quo. That’s about to change. When the earnest “Moxie” — which Poehler also directed — opens, unassuming Vivian is stuck in a terrible nightmare, trapped in the woods, terrified, running, and literally unable to use her own voice to save herself. , and it seems telling that Viv’s nightmare unfolds the night before she head back to Rockport High School for her junior year.

Rockport High, like many an on-screen high school before it, is defined by its many cliques, and neither Vivian nor her best pal Claudia (Lauren Tsai) fit in any of them. Bookish and smart,...

‘Moxie’ Review: Amy Poehler Returns to the Director’s Chair With a Progressive Yet Broad YA Dramedy
Image
It’s been 15 years since screenwriter Tina Fey brought peace to the teenage girl world with the groundbreaking “Mean Girls.” Now it’s her frequent creative partner Amy Poehler’s turn to stride the hallways of a contemporary high school, searching for harmony and justice among the heightened emotions and high-stakes conundrums of young adults.

Marking the multi-hyphenate Poehler’s return to the director’s chair after her casually comforting “Wine Country,” the good-natured dramedy “Moxie” isn’t nearly as sharp as “Mean Girls,” lacking its hilarious wit and unwavering bite, often erring on the side of didacticism and broadness in similarly charting a fed-up young woman’s awakening against her high school’s hostile, victimizing culture. Still, it’s a welcome entry into a familiar genre that will resonate with young audiences burdened by the unwritten rules of their respective educational institutions. And that’s thanks in large part...

Beanie Feldstein and Kaitlyn Dever in Booksmart (2019)
Moxie review – Amy Poehler's high-school comedy plays it straight
Beanie Feldstein and Kaitlyn Dever in Booksmart (2019)
Poehler’s female-empowerment film is like Booksmart or Election – with all the humour and satire stripped out

A high-school movie directed by Amy Poehler, the SNL comedy blackbelt who starred in Parks and Recreation? And who is incidentally the longtime performing partner of Tina Fey, who created the high-school classic Mean Girls? Is this going to be hilarious, or what?

Sadly no. Solemnly based on a novel by YA author Jennifer Mathieu, Moxie could be called Nice Girls or Mutually Supportive Girls. Poehler herself has a small role as the single mom of a smart, lonely teenage girl called Vivian (Hadley Robinson) who is best friends with Claudia (Lauren Tsai), but whose intimacy with her is about to be damaged by her admiration for supercool new girl Lucy (Alycia Pascual-Peña), and her growing romantic situation with the impeccably right-on and pro-feminist supportive guy Seth (Nico Hiraga). Enraged by the boorish,...

Netflix has launched a new trailer for Amy Poehler’s female revolution uprising feature ‘Moxie’.

Vivian (Hadley Robinson), a seemingly shy 16-year-old, has always preferred to keep her head down and fly under the radar. But when the arrival of a new student (Alycia Pascual-Peña) forces her to examine the unchecked behaviour of her fellow students running rampant at her high school, Vivian realizes she’s fed up.

Inspired by her mother’s (Amy Poehler) rebellious past, Vivian anonymously publishes an underground zine called Moxie to expose bias and wrongdoing in her high school and unexpectedly sparks a movement. Moxie Trailer: Director Amy Poehler Sparks a High School Revolution on Netflix
Image
We have a new trailer for Moxie. This is one of Netflix's many, many original movies coming down the pipeline in 2021. In this case, they have reunited with Amy Poehler for a new comedy. Poehler not only stars in the comedy but is also behind the camera as the director as well. As we can see from the trailer, Poehler will be shining a light on a group of young women on a journey of empowerment.

The trailer opens with a conversation between Amy Poehler and her on-screen daughter Valerie, played by Hadley Robinson. She wants to know what her mom cared about when she was young, and Poehler proceeds to explain that she was focused on toppling the patriarchy. Valerie, encouraged, and tired of harassment and other events going on at her school, teams with some classmates to launch a zine. It starts a grassroots movement at the school,...

Sydney Park, Josie Totah, Alycia Pascual-Pena, Anjelika Washington, Hadley Robinson, Sabrina Haskett, Josephine Langford, Lauren Tsai, and Nico Hiraga in Moxie (2021)
"I don't like being voted 'Best Ass'!!" Netflix has launched the first official trailer for the film Moxie, a new high school comedy directed by comedian Amy Poehler (her second directing gig after Wine Country a few years back). Fed up with the sexist and toxic status quo at her high school, a shy 16-year-old named Vivian finds inspiration from her mother's rebellious past and anonymously publishes a zine that sparks a school-wide, coming-of-rage revolution. Amy Poehler’s ‘Moxie’ Trailer Kicks Off With High School ‘Rebel Girl’ Revolution (Video)
Amy Poehler is here to start a revolution — in her teen daughter’s high school. In the first trailer for her film “Moxie” that’s all scored to the classic Bikini Kill song, a group of teenage “Rebel Girls” work to disrupt the sexist norms at their high school by starting a punk rock zine.

Hadley Robinson stars as Poehler’s 16-year-old daughter in the film who tries to keep her head down to avoid pestering and harassment by the jock kids who look to rank girls by their body parts and bangability. But she’s woken up when a new student played by Alycia Pascual-Pena helps her to realize that girls in high school don’t have to put up with this stuff.

Together they’re inspired by her mother’s rebellious past to publish an anonymous underground zine called Moxie and become the center of a feminist rebellion.

‘The Mother-in-Law’ Thriller From Amy Poehler, Jessica Goldberg in the Works at NBC
NBC has given a put pilot order to the thriller “The Mother-in-Law,” based on the 2019 novel by Sally Hepworth.

To be adapted by “The Path” creator Jessica Goldberg, “The Mother-in-Law” is described as “an unexpected thriller centered around a woman’s complicated relationship with her husband’s family that ends in death. A gripping mystery that explores motherhood, class, race and how dangerous family secrets can be.”

Amy Poehler and Kate Arend of her Paper Kite Productions banner will executive produce the project, as will Hepworth and Dave Becky of 3 Arts Entertainment. Universal Television, where Poehler has an overall deal, is the studio.

A put pilot commitment means that the network has agreed to air the pilot, but does not guarantee the project will go to series. If the network chooses not to air the pilot, it will owe a financial penalty to the studio.

‘Legion’ Series Finale: What a Long, Strange Trip It’s Been
This post contains full spoilers for the series finale of FX’s Legion.

As Professor X himself, Charles Xavier (Harry Lloyd), confronts the powerful telepath Amahl Farouk (Navid Negahban) on the astral plane late in the Legion series finale, Farouk scoffs at Xavier choosing a military knife as his weapon. The astral plane is “an arena of infinite promise,” Farouk notes. “Surely, we have more imagination than that?”

Legion creator Noah Hawley treated these three deeply strange, often riveting, occasionally indecipherable seasons as his arena of infinite promise. Coherence — both...

‘Legion’s Noah Hawley Talks Tonight’s Series Finale, ‘Fargo’, ‘Doctor Doom’ Movie & ‘Cat’s Cradle’ Adaptation
Image
Spoiler Alert: This article contains details of tonight’s Legion series finale on FX.

After three mind-bending and time-traveling seasons, Legion came to an end tonight by going full circle, including on the soundtrack with The Who’s “Happy Jack.”

A baby, a showdown with the parasitic Farouk (Navid Negahban), a new beginning and future X-Men boss Charles Xavier (Harry Lloyd) empathically telling his powerful telepathic son David Heller/Legion (Dan Stevens) that he was “trapped in a war you didn’t start.” Did Daddy make it all better in the end of the series finale co-directed and co-penned by Hawley? Could anyone make it all better for the perpetual battle zone that was David’s psyche?

Well, Legion being Legion, yes and no, as the self-described “twisted rainbow” and exquisitely crafted series co-starring Rachel Keller, Jean Smart, Aubrey Plaza Jermaine Clement, Stephanie Corneliussen and Lauren Tsai made clear tonight...

‘Legion’ Series Finale: Noah Hawley on That Ending, New Beginnings, and Saying Goodbye Twice
Dan Stevens in Legion (2017)
[Editor’s Note: The following interview contains spoilers for the “Legion” series finale — Season 3, “Chapter 28” — including the ending.]

The last shot of “Legion” had been in Noah Hawley’s mind for a while, but how it came to be carried more than a few surprises.

“I definitely had a sense coming out of Season 2 that the end of the show was the beginning of the show; that the last image we saw would be the first image that we saw,” Hawley told IndieWire. “I feel like there was something really perfect to that. I always knew in a broader sense what the three acts of the story had to be, but that doesn’t mean I knew how the story was going to resolve literally. You just trust yourself to figure it out as you go.”

What ensued was a season of time travel, culminating in “Chapter 28’s” cosmic battles between an adult David (Dan Stevens), his father Charles Xavier...

‘Legion’: Down the Rabbit Hole With Lauren Tsai – From Reality Star to FX Time Traveler
Dan Stevens in Legion (2017)
[Editor’s Note: The following contains minor spoilers from “Legion” Season 3 through Episode 5, “Chapter 24.”

Before Lauren Tsai played a time traveler on “Legion,” she packed in several careers in her 21 years. A newcomer to the acting world, Tsai is also a model and illustrator, but is probably best known as a reality star for her run on the Japanese-language Netflix/Fuji TV series, “Terrace House.”

During the time that Tsai appeared on “Terrace House: Aloha State,” she held her first gallery opening in Hawaii and then eventually left the show to pursue modeling in Japan. “I did my first solo gallery show when I was on the show. I put so much of myself into that, and it was terrifying to have my work out there,” she said in an interview with IndieWire. “That was the first time I ever showed my work publicly.”

Some reality stars – such as David Giuntoli and Jamie Chung – have parlayed their reality fame into acting careers,...
