The rules of the streets are clear: If a brawl ensues, you fight too. It doesn’t matter who threw the first punch or instigated the fracas. A blow at your friend is an attack on the group.
It’s odd, then, that Miguel (Tyler Dean Flores), the protagonist of Miguel Wants to Fight, a spry and entertaining film directed by Oz Rodriguez, has never even thrown a punch. His friends aren’t habitual fighters, but even they’ve found themselves in the middle of a melee or two. Plus, Miguel’s dad (Raúl Castillo) runs a boxing studio and the kid’s obsessed with Bruce Lee and Jackie Chan.
So, what gives? Is it inexperience? (Yes). Lack of confidence? (That too). Fear? (Bingo).

“People jump in, you jump in. That’s the rule.” So says one of high schooler Miguel’s punch-happy pals at the start of Hulu’s bawdy comedy flick Miguel Wants to Fight (premiering August 16). But Miguel has never jumped in. That realization is a shock to his three best friends—ex-boxer David (Christian Vunipola), scrappy Cass (Imani Lewis), and sharp-tongued Srini (Suraj Partha)—who swear they’ve seen the guy throw at least one punch. Later, when Miguel gets the upsetting news that he’s moving hours away from Syracuse with his family, he decides to try to get into his first fight instead of telling his friends. Conveniently, he lives in a neighborhood where everyone, and we mean everyone, is always getting into a scrap. “Miguel is surrounded by fighting. That’s something we wanted to enforce, even in the murals that he walks by,” director Oz Rodriguez says.

Following the success of their years-long partnership that spawned seven original films including Natalie Morales’ “Plan B” and “Crush,” Hulu Originals has renewed its first look deal with comedy production company American High. Jason Zaro (“Brigsby Bear”) will serve as co-producer across the new slate of films for Hulu.

On Tuesday, Netflix put a stake in First Kill after just one season. Today, showrunner Felicia D. Henderson went public with her thoughts about why the show was not given a new cycle.
First Kill was based on a short story by Victoria “V. E.” Schwab and executive produced by Emma Roberts.
In the series, teenage vampire Juliette (Sarah Catherine Hook) sets out to make her first kill so she can take her place among a powerful vampire family. She sets her sights on a new girl in town named Calliope (Imani Lewis). But much to Juliette’s surprise, Calliope is a vampire hunter, from a family of celebrated slayers. Both find that the other won’t be so easy to kill and, unfortunately, way too easy to fall for.
“I so enthusiastically signed on to this show [because] it has something for everyone,” Henderson said in an interview today with the Daily Beast,...

The teen vampire series First Kill will not be returning for a second season as Netflix has canceled the Sarah Catherine Hook and Imani Lewis-starring drama. According to Deadline, the series did not meet the thresholds for viewing and completion of episodes. This was despite the show landing in the streamer’s weekly Top 10 for English-language TV series within its first three days of release. The show peaked at No. 3 in its first full week of release, falling only behind Stranger Things 4 and Peaky Blinders Season 6. First Kill is written by Felicia D. Henderson and best-selling author Victoria “V.E.” Schwab and is based on one of Shwab’s short stories. It revolves around teenage vampire Juliette (Hook) and her attempt to make her first kill so she can join a powerful vampire family. Netflix has cancelled “First Kill” after its one and only season that launched in June of this year, TheWrap has confirmed.
Deadline first reported the news.
Netflix declined comment, but individuals with knowledge tell TheWrap that the decision comes down to cost vs. viewership, and that popularity at any given moment doesn’t account for factors like completion of a show’s season.
The series, produced by Emma Roberts through Belletrist Productions, is based off of V.E. Schwab’s short story “First Kill.” Felicia D. Henderson and Schwab wrote the television script.
“First Kill” follows teenage vampire Juliette (Sarah Catherine Hook) and teenage vampire hunter Calliope (Imani Lewis) as they both approach important rights of passage, which actually share a name — the first kill — even though they mean different things for each girl.

Netflix has driven a stake into “First Kill,” deciding against picking up the teenage vampire series for a second season. The news comes nearly two months after the streamer debuted all eight episodes of the show’s first season in early June.
Sources close to the matter maintain that Netflix is proud of the work that producers, cast and crew put in on the series, though the decision came down to a matter of viewing numbers versus cost.
Based on a short story from horror writer V. E. Schwab, “First Kill” followed Calliope (Imani Lewis) and Juliette (Sarah Catherine Hook), two teenage girls who fall for one another, but come from warring families: one a dynasty of vampire hunters, the other a line of bloodsuckers.
The series also starred Elizabeth Mitchell, Will Swenson, Aubion Wise, Jason Robert Moore, Gracie Dzienny, Dylan McNamara, Dominic Goodman, Phillip Mullings Jr., Mk xyz, Jonas Dylan Allen and Roberto Mendez.

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for First Kill Season 1.] Netflix’s new vampire drama First Kill follows a Romeo-and-Juliet-style forbidden romance between Calliope Burns (Imani Lewis), the youngest daughter of a family of monster hunters, and aptly named Juliette Fairmont (Sarah Catherine Hook), the youngest daughter in a family of legacy vampires. Netflix Sworn enemies linked by the illicit lovers, the Fairmont and Burns families become increasingly entangled and Juliette’s older sister takes on the role of sociopathic puppet master. While Juliette rejects her family’s cruel traditions and bloodthirsty nature, Elinor embraces them with open arms — and fangs. Gracie Dzienny, who plays the glamorous vamp, spoke with TV Insider about sinking her teeth into the role of Elinor and all things First Kill. Elinor is definitely a girl boss. She has so many great lines — a personal favorite is: “He’s a tool, but a tool I can use.” If you had to pick just one favorite...

Note: Spoilers ahead for the “First Kill” Season 1 finale on Netflix
Young love is an overwhelming and tenuous thing — it only gets harder when you turn your girlfriend’s brother into a vampire. But alas, that’s where the first season of “First Kill” on Netflix leaves us, after Juliette bites Cal’s brother. Where things go from here is anyone’s guess, but series star Sarah Catherine Hook has some ideas.
First, a quick recap. In the final episode of the series, Cal’s (Imani Lewis) brothers end up attacking Elinor after trying to get information out of her. She’s crafty though, and in a quick evasive maneuver, she manages to avoid Apollo’s driving blow — resulting in Theo taking the stake instead. As he bleeds out, Elinor wipes Apollo’s memory and flees.

The (hopefully) first season of this series is based on a short story from Victoria “V.E.” Schwab and expands the plot to eight episodes. With so much extra time to fill, the ending of First Kill season 1 goes its own way. Here is what you should know about First Kill‘s final act.

Netflix's hotly anticipated queer-vampire romance "First Kill" debuted on Netflix on June 10, and if you've seen it, you might already be crushing on the cast. The show follows teen vampire slayer Imani Lewis and vampire Sarah Catherine Hook as they embark on a very complicated romance - there's that little issue of the fact that they're supposed to kill each other. Their families, which entrenched in their roles as proud vampire hunters and equally proud supernatural blood-suckers, don't help.

Watching the trailer for “First Kill,” it was tempting to assume that Netflix’s new teen show got lost on its way to The CW. After watching the actual episodes, however, it’s necessary to apologize to The CW for the insult to a genre it’s done well for years, and which “First Kill” spends an inordinate amount of energy trying to duplicate without much success.
Based on the short story by V.E. Schwab, who also wrote the first episode and produces the series, “First Kill” dutifully sets up its YA supernatural show bingo board. There are bitchy sisters and ice queen mothers, overbearing fathers and wisecracking best friends. There are vampires, ghouls and werewolves. There are star-crossed lovers — vampire Juliette (Sarah Catherine Hook) and vampire hunter Calliope (Imani Lewis) — caught between their family duties and raging hormones. One problem with the many reboots, revivals and legacy sequels haunting the airwaves and multiplexes is how they devalue the art of the old-fashioned ripoff—the underrecognized fact that sometimes mining an old movie or show for inspiration, rather than remaking it directly, can open up new creative avenues. On those terms, the Netflix series “First Kill” seems ideal. Though author V.E. Schwab can probably cite any number of influences, the TV series based on her short story is very much in the vein of “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” the seven-season classic that fused coming-of-age drama with clever riffs on horror tropes.
Naturally, some tweaks are in order when imitating a show that ended nearly 20 years ago: “First Kill”’s teenage monster-hunter-in-training, Calliope (Imani Lewis), is a young woman of color, and when she falls in love with a vampire, it’s another girl, Juliette (Sarah Catherine Hook), rather than a smoldering male hunk.

Not to suggest literature’s most famous star-crossed lovers didn’t have it rough, but at least Romeo didn’t grow up learning to kill Juliet on sight — and at least Juliet wasn’t biting back on a primal urge to drain Romeo of his blood.
That’s the conundrum at the heart of First Kill, which charts the saga of Juliette (Sarah Catherine Hook), the youngest scion of an ancient and powerful lineage of vampires, and her new high school classmate Calliope (Imani Lewis), the late-blooming baby in a clan of monster hunters. It’s a premise ripe for angsty drama, steamy romance and intricate lore. Alas, though the series tries to deliver them all, its eight-episode debut season is undermined on every front by bland execution that renders it more painless than addictive.

Fans may be ready to jump into the love story of Calliope Burns and Juliette Fairmont when “First Kill” hits Netflix this week, but series star Sarah Catherine Hook is admittedly nervous about entering the world of shippers. Don’t worry though, it’s the good kind of nervous.
Based on series creator V.E. Schwab’s short story of the same name, “First Kill” is like a reimagined “Romeo and Juliet.” Calliope (Imani Lewis) — who prefers just Cal — comes from a family of monster hunters, while Juliette (Hook) comes from a family of, well, monsters. Juliette and her family are vampires, but inevitably, she falls for Cal, and the feeling is very, very mutual.
The pairing has been dubbed “Calliette” on social media, and fans are already obsessed with them. And yes, Sarah Catherine Hook has seem some of those fan edits.
“We already, yeah, it’s kind of insane!

World, say hello to your next action star: Imani Lewis. The 23-year-old actor from Southside Jamaica Queens, NY, is ready to make a splash as the newest vampire slayer to hit the scene in Netflix's queer YA drama "First Kill."
Lewis is no stranger to the small screen - she's starred in shows like "The Equalizer" and Fox's "Star." She even has a little vampire experience under her belt from Netflix's "Vampires vs. The Bronx," a film she appeared in alongside Jaden Michael, Coco Jones, and Method Man. Here's something to sink your teeth into. Netflix's First Kill is the perfect show for those seeking a dark love story with supernatural (and Shakespearean) undertones. In the YA series, teens Juliette (Sarah Catherine Hook) and Calliope Burns (Imani Lewis) are the ultimate star-crossed lovers, having both been born into centuries-old feuding families. To make matters worse, they both need to make their first kill. Calliope descends from a long line of monster hunters and has two older brothers. "Her biggest thing is just trying to prove to her family that she deserves respect as a monster hunter," Imani explained in an exclusive featurette, "instead of just the teenage little...

Netflix's highly anticipated queer vampire series is arriving on June 10. Based on a short story by bestselling author V. E. Schwab, "First Kill" stars Imani Lewis as Calliope Burns, a new girl in town who happens to be a vampire hunter, and Sarah Catherine Hook as Juliette Fairmont, a teenage vampire who falls in love with said vampire hunter and needs to make her first kill in order to join her powerful vamp family. Sounds complicated, right? The series also stars Gracie Dzienny, Phillip Mullings Jr., Dominic Goodman, Elizabeth Mitchell, and Aubin Wise.
Goodman, who plays Calliope's brother, recently spoke to Popternative about what viewers can expect from the teen drama series. "First off, I will say this is a family of monster hunters; while I will say this show has a heavy presence of vampires, we are a family of monster hunters," he teased. "I think it's going...

“You never forget your first,” is the tagline in the trailer for Netflix’s upcoming vampire drama, “First Kill.” While it would seem that the vampire genre has been having grown tiresome in the last decade or so, one look at this trailer promises to combine classic thrills with prescient nuance. “First Kill” will revolve around the teenage Juliet, whose powerful vampire family decides that it is time for her “first kill.” When Juliette (Sarah Catharine Hook) sets her sights on classmate Calliope (Imani Lewis), she is shocked to learn that she comes from a famous lineage of vampire hunters.

"You can't be together, it won't work." "I've forbidden you from seeing her." Netflix has revealed the main official trailer for a series titled First Kill, which is the polar opposite of the other First Love trailer we also posted today. This series is a spin on "first love" but about teenage lesbian vampires - with a tagline saying "you never forget your first." Of course not. Falling in love is tricky for teens Juliette and Calliope: One's a vampire, the other's a vampire hunter and both are ready to make their first kill. Sarah Catherine Hook & Imani Lewis star as Juliette & Calliope (aka "Cal"), along with an ensemble cast: Elizabeth Mitchell, Will Swenson, Aubion Wise, Jason Robert Moore, Gracie Dzienny, Dylan McNamara, Dominic Goodman, Phillip Mullings Jr., Mk xyz, Jonas Dylan Allen, and Roberto Mendez. This looks extra cheesy - combining bland first love tropes with the rivalry from the Underworld series.
