Netflix has released the teaser trailer and the first photos for the limited series Wayward, which is set to launch on September 25, 2025.
Nothing is what it seems in Tall Pines. After an escape attempt from an academy for “troubled teens,” two students join forces with a newly local police officer, unearthing the town’s dark and deeply rooted secrets.
In the picture-perfect town of Tall Pines, sinister secrets lurk behind every closed door. Not long after police officer Alex Dempsey (Mae Martin) and his pregnant wife Laura (Sarah Gadon) move into their new home, he connects with two students Abbie (Sydney Topliffe) and Leila (Alyvia Alyn Lind) from the local school for “troubled teens” who are desperate to escape and could be the key to unearthing everything rotten in the town.

It doesn’t take long for the action in Siobhan McCarthy’s charming directorial debut, She’s the He, to kick off. The film, which premiered at SXSW, opens with two friends scheming to get laid before they graduate from high school. Their libidinous preoccupations, like those of the protagonists of Superbad, Booksmart and more recently Bottoms, are familiar. But unlike their predecessors, Alex (Nico Carney) and Ethan (Misha Osherovich) aren’t just considered losers by the vague standards of a rigidly stratified student body. Everyone also thinks they are gay and dating each other.
To change their reputation, the pair decide to come out as trans. The logic behind this plan doesn’t completely hold up, but the execution leads to an entertaining and endearing coming-of-age drama.
For the most part, She’s the He follows the beats of a typical comedic bildungsroman, but McCarthy also finds distinctive ways into the genre.

On the verge of graduating high school, two cisgender boys pretend to be transgender to get into the girl’s locker room. It sounds like a ferocious right wing fever dream. However, in the silly but lovable “She’s the He,” debuting feature director Siobhan McCarthy — and their heavily trans and nonbinary cast and crew — find the farce through a twist: one of the “boys” discovers she really is transgender. The result is a meaningful comedy-drama about identity, and the confusion of burgeoning youth.
Half the fun of “She’s the He” lies in its Russian-nesting-doll logistics: It’s a film in which trans and non-binary actors play ostensibly cisgender characters pretending to be trans. Not only does this subvert the Hollywood norm of having cisgender men play trans women (and sometimes receiving Oscar attention for it!), it also adds a playful fluidity to the film’s purview of queerness, as though...

She's The He
With the energy and charm of a classic high school movie and a distinctly modern sensibility, She’s The He is one of the highlights of this year’s South by Southwest. It follows best friends Alex (Nico Carney) and Ethan (Misha Osherovich) on an ill-advised adventure into the girls’ changing rooms, under cover of pretending to be trans, which leaves Alex way out of his depth and Misha discovering that she really is a girl. Just before the festival, I connected with writer/director Siobhan McCarthy to discuss it.
“It's definitely one of those movies that I wish I had growing up as a queer kid,” they say. “We all had to grow up on the early 2000s movies that are so iconic. Movies like Mean Girls and She's The Man and Clueless. They honestly were such a big part of the entire Gen Z childhood experience that.

In the indie comedy “She’s the He,” which premiered at SXSW on Sunday, high school seniors Alex and Ethan decide during the last week of school to pretend they’re trans so they can sneak into the women’s locker room. If that sounds like a premise lifted right out of Maga-era attacks on trans rights, it’s because it is — that’s the point.
First-time writer-director Siobhan McCarthy dreamed up the idea just over a year ago, in February 2024, after discovering online that the one high school comedy that spoke to them as a teenager — the 2006 Amanda Bynes comedy “She’s the Man” — was just as formative for many other trans kids. That led to a conversation with their friend, Will Geare (who co-edited “She’s the He” with McCarthy), about the kinds of trans stories they both wished they’d been able to see when they were younger.

In recent years a worrying number of men on the right of US politics have stepped up to declare that had trans rights been a thing when they were at high school or college, they would have pretended to be trans in order to get into girls’ changing rooms and ogle the objects of their desire. Not only is this really not the gotcha they think it is – it doesn’t so much address others’ behaviour as their own need to be on a watchlist – it’s poorly thought through. What would really happen in a situation like that? She’s The He, which screened at SXSW 2025, aims to find out.
Meet Alex (Nico Carney) and Ethan (Misha Osherovich). They’ve been best friends for so long that everyone is convinced they’re a couple, despite the fact that Alex is always hitting on Mary (Suzanne Cryer), Ethan’s mum.

“I can’t wait to kill you.”
We’re all familiar with the slasher killer. Usually male, this tall and imposing monster stalks his victims with phallic weapons while covering his face with an iconic mask. From Michael Myers’ “The Shape” to Ghostface’s billowing robes, we’ve become accustomed to fearing these hulking beasts when we see them approaching an unsuspecting victim.
What we’re not prepared for is a slasher killer in the body of a teenage girl. Christopher Landon subverts this decades-old archetype with his 2020 film Freaky. By remixing classic slasher tropes with the patterns of a teen body swap comedy, Landon and screenwriter Michael Kennedy deliver a surprisingly empathetic exploration of gender and strength.
Millie (Kathryn Newton) is a shy high school student who’s just lost her father. Struggling to connect with her grieving mother, she leans on friends Nyla (Celeste O’Connor) and Josh (Misha Osherovich) for emotional support.

Exclusive: Queer advocacy group Out in Hollywood released its third annual list of the best unproduced queer-focused television pilot scripts of the past year.
The scripts that made it to the list underwent a blind evaluation process overseen by Out in Hollywood’s Board of Directors featuring an all-queer-identifying panel of judges conformed of proudly Out producers, studio and network executives.
“In 2023, our mission feels more urgent than ever. From the political attacks on queer identity and expression happening around the country to the WGA’s fight for–amongst other things–opportunity, equity and creative agency, creating space and a platform for queer writers remains a necessary act of both protest and joy,” Board member Maija Gustin said of this year’s list.

After the success of the 2020 horror-comedy Freaky there's been steady demand for a Freaky 2 in the future, but the sequel to the quirky body swap slasher has yet to materialize. Blumhouse Productions and directed by Christopher Landon, Freaky is a charming, bloody affair that explores the aftermath of high school student Millie Kessler (Kathryn Newton) swapping bodies with a serial killer known as the Blissfield Butcher (Vince Vaughn). Inspired by the story Freaky Friday and drawing elements from classic '80s slasher movies, Freaky is a coming-of-age tale with both heart and gore — which would make it a standout offering within the horror genre in any other year.
Freaky left a subtle hint in the ending as to how the single endeavor could become a larger franchise, or at least get a sequel. Just like Happy Death Day — which has been confirmed to exist in the same universe as Freaky...

Exclusive: Misha Osherovich, who starred alongside Vince Vaughan in Freaky, has co-created a drama series about the troubled-teen industry.
Osherovich co-created and co-wrote Troubled with screenwriter Skylar Landsee, who has worked on The Americans and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows.
The series explores the problematic troubled-teen reform industry, which was in the headlines again last year after Paris Hilton revealed her own struggles.
It is based on Osherovich’s experiences and survival story in the underground world of tough-love programs for rebellious youth. The darkly comedic drama series will expose the corrupt multimillion-dollar industry that has gone unnoticed and unchecked for decades and highlights the hopeful bonds these teens forge in the worst of circumstances.
The troubled-teen industry is a network of private youth programs, therapeutic boarding schools, residential treatment centers, religious academies, wilderness programs and drug-rehabilitation centers, often run by private companies, nonprofits or faith-based groups,...

The Girl in the Woods is thanks to a woman behind the camera. The Girl in the Woods is one of the most exciting TV shows of the year.
The series follows a young woman's escape from a mysterious cult-like colony that guards the world from monsters hidden behind a door in the woods.
TV Fanatic got the chance to chat with Sofia Bryant (Tasha), Misha Osherovich (Nolan), Will Yun Lee (Arthur Dean), Reed Diamond (Hosea), and Kylie Lya Page (Sara) about bringing the series to life.
We also talked with Stefanie Scott, who plays Carrie. Stefanie's full interview is at the bottom of the post in video form.
One thing that was evident from the series is that all of the characters get a lot to work with. They feel very well-developed, and the show does not waste a single character.
Reed was ecstatic to work on the show because it had everything his 13-year-old daughter is looking for.
"She's looking for real compelling horror.

Freaky – a cross between Friday the 13th and Freaky Friday (the two most famous Fridays in film) sounds like an engaging concept; but when put to screen it’s more fun, gruesome and surprisingly entertaining than I ever imagined it could be.
Director Christopher Landon is best known for his slasher take on the 90s classic Groundhog Day with his 2017 film Happy Death Day. Now he is back and this time he’s taken the 70s classic Freaky Friday, starring Barbara Harris and Jodi Foster (or you may be more familiar with the 2003 remake starring Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan), and again Landon is adding that slasher touch. The concept is the same as before, a good old classic body swap. Vince Vaughn is the Blissfield Butcher,...

The film has been pushed back. And pushed back again. But it’s been worth the worth, as seeing Freaky on a big screen is as good a time you’ll have this Summer. Freaky is one of the few major motion pictures that has been released in the last few months of the year (at least in the United States) and is a fun mix of Freaky Friday and Mean Girls with a dash of the Scream franchise. Vince Vaughn looks like he is having fun playing not only a serial killer but also a 17-year-old high schooler while the rest of the cast, including Misha Osherovich in a breakout role, does a solid job creating a fun and unique film.

The horror genre loves its tropes — sets of rules that dictate survival based on stereotypes around morality, class, race, gender and sexual orientation.
Much of the game in modern horror comes in examining and subverting those tropes, perhaps none so recent and notable as “Freaky,” Christopher Landon’s body-swap film from Universal Pictures that hits PVOD on Friday.
Dressed up as a gory comedy, “Freaky” offers liberating and honest portraits of young women and queer people, free from tokenism and broad generalizations to which the genre can often resort.
In “Freaky,” a struggling teen girl Millie (Kathryn Newton) and a menacing serial killer (Vince Vaughn) switch bodies thanks to a supernatural artifact. Now trapped in the killer’s flesh, Millie races against a clock to reverse the effects before she’s stuck forever, aided by best friends Nyla (Celeste O’Connor) and Josh (Misha Osherovich).
Warning: Spoilers ahead for “Freaky.”

The horror-comedy Freaky released in theaters recently opened to critical acclaim and a healthy box-office showing. The movie takes the age-old Hollywood concept of a body swap leading to all kinds of hijinks and puts a horror spin on the premise when high school student Millie swaps bodies with a notorious serial killer known as the Blissfield Butcher. In an interview, the film's director Christopher Landon revealed why Freaky is like a twisted Disney movie.
"[Freaky] required [an R rating] because, I think conceptually, if you're going to put a serial killer in a shy, co-dependent, wallflower-y girl's body, then you need to pay that off. And I think that doing something that was PG-13 and bloodless, I just think you would lose the impact of it. I've described this movie to people as sort of being like the goriest Disney movie never made because body swap movies are cute. They're always cute.

Being outspoken and bold about their opinions, while also being grounded and clearheaded, is a vital combination for any victim to have while they’re fighting to save their lives in any situation. Those vital characteristics powerfully help the supporting characters of Nyla and Josh, who are played by Celeste O’Connor and Misha Osherovich in the […]

Filmmaker Christopher Landon, who is behind such horror standouts as Paranormal Activity and Happy Death Day, is back with his new horror-comedy Freaky. The movie features Vince Vaughn as a serial killer, and Kathryn Newton as high school student Millie. In an interview, Newton explained how she was able to convincingly go from playing a dorky high school girl to a decades-older serial killer after her and Vaughn's characters switch bodies.
"We talked about the center of gravity of each character, their posture and the physicality, because they're so different. Millie, she's more like me. I was totally like Millie - a dork in high school who didn't fit in, and I appreciated that she just wanted to disappear. That's easier sometimes than telling people who you are or trying to show who you are. The Butcher was so grounded, dark and mysterious, and he came from his chest. He...

The switching bodies cinematic legacy is full of entries, and it just scored a worthy addition with the Vince Vaughn-starring Blumhouse thriller Freaky.
Freaky Friday has nothing on Freaky—after all, no one involved in that classic body switch flick was a serial killer. Sure, one half was a teenage girl, that much is similar. But that is where the similarities begin and end.
First off, Blissfield could not be a better moniker for the town that hosts our yarn. Right? A serial killer is about to march through this municipality, on Homecoming weekend no less, and everything the killer does is at the other end of a blissful spectrum.
As Freaky commences, Millie (Kathryn Newton) is a somewhat moody teenage girl who feels her “friendship” with her mother is the only thing keeping the family matriarch (Katie Finneran) from completely drinking herself to death.
Now, she just drinks herself to sleep every night.

Spoiler alert: This post contains mild spoilers from the new horror film “Freaky”
“Real Housewives” fans will scream in delight knowing an iconic scene from the reality TV franchise appears in the new horror film “Freaky.”
Warning, mild spoilers ahead.
Midway through the film, the murderous Blissfield Butcher (Kathryn Newton) gets captured and tied-up in high schooler Josh’s (Misha Osherovich) house. To pass the time, Josh turns on one of his favorite shows, “The Real Housewives of New York City.”
The scene he’s watching is one most iconic from the series, the Season 4 episode where LuAnn de Lesseps — aka The Countess — is bucked while riding a camel in Morocco. One moment, de Lesseps is enjoying a tranquil ride through the desert; the next, she’s hanging on and hollering for dear life.

Over a decades-long career, actor Vince Vaughn has played a variety of characters. In his new horror-comedy movie Freaky, Vaughn essays perhaps his most challenging role yet, that of a teenage girl. The movie centers on the premise of a high-school girl swapping bodies with a serial killer. In an interview with CinemaBlend, Vaughn explained that one aspect of the story that will help the audience "magically" buy into the body-swap scenario are the smaller, emotional moments.
"I think [director] Chris [Landon] is so talented at blending comedy and horror. It's a difficult thing to do. So we were putting so many things on its ear and having so much fun. But what I loved the most was that there's an emotional believability that goes throughout [the movie]. ... I think part of what helps us buy the body swap -- and obviously Kathryn's performance tremendously so as Millie -- is that I think we...
