Crafting the perfect TV family can be tricky. Most thrive off dysfunction — everything from “Arrested Development” to its genre-bent counterpart “Succession” — while many focus instead on found family among friends, coworkers, or community. At least one on-air drama is about the perils of inbreeding and bad communication between loved ones, so we wouldn’t exactly call it a family show.
In classic sitcoms starting with “Leave it to Beaver,” there was the idea of the model family (passed down so overtly as to inspire a “Boy Meets World” episode literally called “Model Family” that explicitly sites the Cleavers). From “Family Ties” to “Full House” to “Sister Sister,” the nuclear family was the beating heart of a TV show, with a kind of wholesome chemistry and dynamic that sometimes feels lost now.
But like every TV genre, the family comedy is alive, thriving, and evolving — perhaps nowhere as brilliantly as Apple’s “Trying,...

Some shows are big cultural hits and juggernauts, and some quietly go on season after season; maybe not a huge critical giant, but there are enough ardent fans to justify their existence. And that’s probably where Apple TV+’s “Trying,” a heartwarming British comedy television series created by Andy Wolton (“The Amazing World of Gumball”), lands; it has its fans, and it keeps successfully chugging along, though to be fair, it does have its U.K.

When last we saw Nikki (Esther Smith) and Jason (Rafe Spall) in the Apple TV+ comedy series “Trying,” the couple was trying to pull off a reverse shotgun wedding — well, sort of. The long-term partners decided they finally wanted to get married, but rather than get hitched before people knew they were pregnant, they wanted to tie the knot before their kids were taken away from them. Luckily, Nikki and Jason won their court case against their adopted children’s biological grandmother, and with that out of the way, all their worries were over.
Ok, not quite. “Trying” takes a warts-and-all approach to parenthood (if not life in general), so there will always be concerns, big and small, for the family to deal with — the key is sticking together, no matter how trying things get. Season 4 brings a fresh set of family matters, as the story jumps six years into...

Where to Watch ‘Trying’: Apple TV+
Maybe it’s trite to call couples a “team,” but if there’s one current TV couple that really earns such a description, it’s Jason Ross and Nikki Newman from the Apple TV+ series “Trying.” It makes sense, given how much of the show so far is based around the two making an attempt (few series sport a title as thesaurus-prompting as this one) to grow their family.
After finding out they can’t conceive on their own, Nikki and Jason begin the lengthy adoption process. Even against the stream of encounters with exes and roller-coaster news updates from their adoption liaison, “Trying” has its moorings in two people who keep finding ways back to each other. Rafe Spall and Esther Smith have such a playful onscreen chemistry that, along with the direction from Jim O’Hanlon...

[Editor’s Note: The following interview contains spoilers for “Trying” Season 2.]
Wedding-day antics can go wrong in any number of ways. The last episode of “Trying” Season 2 is an ending filled with surprise boyfriends, unexpected proposals, emergency news, and a first dance set to bebop jazz. Any of those things in isolation could send a TV comedy careening from light-hearted fun into disaster. But this Apple TV+ show has proven repeatedly that it can handle all the absurdity in the lives of Nikki (Esther Smith) and Jason (Rafe Spall) while still making their journey together feel real.
As the director of both seasons, Jim O’Hanlon has been keeping his finger on the pulse of how the shows wild twists and turns play out. Along with series writer/creator Andy Wolton, the two have found a winning, dependable test for whether or not “Trying” works: Trust the couple at the center.
“Big physical comedy can get very broad if you’re not careful.

Genuinely happy couples are some of TV’s greatest magic tricks. So often, people in a contented relationship are used as flat foils for a pair of others caught in a dysfunctional loop. Other times, those couples’ joy is the narrative equivalent of cotton candy, empty calories designed to provide comfort and nothing else.
All of this makes “Trying” feel like that much more of an achievement, not to mention a welcome respite. The Apple TV+ comedy, debuting its Season 2 this week, revolves around Nikki (Esther Smith) and Jason (Rafe Spall), two Camden residents on an extended journey to add to their family. The events of the first season eventually saw them approved by an adoption panel, and now begins the next stretch of the process.
Of course, Nikki and Jason are still not 100 percent certain in their potential parenting skills. In that way — amongst a handful of others — “Trying...

“Trying” was one of those shows that seemed to arrive at just the right time last year. When most folks were stuck inside, looking for a little ray of sunlight, the Apple TV+ comedy was a welcome respite. As the show’s Season 2 trailer hints, it’s back for plenty more a year later.
The show follows Nikki (Esther Smith) and Jason (Rafe Spall), a London couple having difficulty conceiving, who manage to maintain a strong relationship even as their happiness is tested. When they find out that adoption might be the only way for them to raise a child, it starts a roller coaster of high hopes and near misses and living room meetings with their filter-free rep Penny (Imelda Staunton).

Rafe Spall’s first tryout was a speech from Julius Caesar that his famous dad asked him to perform in the living room before giving the then-fifteen-year-old a thumbs up to pursue an acting career. Fast-forward, and the British actor, son of award-winning veteran Timothy Spall, has since built a career that spans television, features and theater both at home and in Hollywood. Most recently, he’s starring in AppleTV+’s first Britcom, Trying. The heart-warming story of a couple struggling to have a baby, and ultimately opting for adoption, is written by Andy Wolton and co-stars Esther Smith and Imelda Staunton. Produced by BBC Studios, it’s received strong reviews since dropping this month. A second season has been commissioned.

“Trying,” the first British scripted original to land on Apple TV Plus, has been available on the platform for less than a week, but already plans are afoot to make a second season.
“We’re hoping to do it at the end of the summer/fall period,” says star Rafe Spall, who confirms that the series has been recommissioned by the tech giant.
Of course, much depends on how and when production can restart in the U.K. “With a bit of luck, we might get there,” says Spall, whose credits include BBC miniseries “The War of the Worlds” as well as features “Just Mercy,” “Men in Black: International” and “Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom.”
Spall stars alongside Esther Smith in the tender, funny and compassionate comedy about a 30-something couple who try for adoption after realizing they’re unable to have children themselves.

The name of Andy Wolton’s new Apple TV+ series, “Trying,” reads like a misnomer, because the whole production feels effortless: Charming, easy, light on its feet even in its most somber moments, welded together by wonderful performances from its two leads, Rafe Spall and Esther Smith. But Wolton couldn’t up and name his show “Effortless” because, among many other reasons, there’s nothing effortless about becoming a parent, whether through birth or through adoption.
The former path is where viewers meet Wolton’s protagonists, Jason (Spall) and Nikki (Smith), a dedicated 30-something couple who’ve put in uncalculated hours attempting to conceive; the latter path is the one they end up taking when they fail, yet again, to get pregnant, and the story follows them through the rigors of the adoption process.

In some ways, building a TV show around a couple to root for is a lot more difficult than setting up one doomed to fail. What makes “Trying,” the latest comedy in the greater Apple TV+ library, such a success is that it finds a way for any viewer to be invested in its central couple’s happiness while not being shut off from the fortifying ups and downs that make following them worth it.
Nikki (Esther Smith) and Jason (Rafe Spall) don’t claim to be extraordinary. She works at a rental car company call center and he teaches adult Esl classes. When their attempts to conceive a child of their own are unsuccessful, they both decide to take the next step and pursue adoption. Like most prospective parents, they quickly find themselves in over their heads, but through that realization are able to lean on each other.
