Movies and TV shows regularly come and go from streaming services; we all know this, but the trend has taken a disturbing turn in the past year, with content being pulled, sometimes permanently, just to save a few bucks. I know, it’s just business, but for the hundreds of creatives who have had their hard-work yanked from existence, it hurts. Disney+ has taken things to a new level as they have pulled Crater from the service, a movie which was released on May 12th… less than two months ago.
There’s no official word on why Crater was removed from Disney+, but The Independent believes that it’s “an attempt to cut costs relating to licencing deals.” The decision has sparked an outcry on social media, with some wondering why they’re paying for the service that can’t even keep their own content.

Update, July 4: Another victim of Disney’s cost-cutting on the streaming front has emerged: “Crater,” a sci-fi adventure film about a group of children that hijack a rover before a member of the group relocates to a new planet. The film, starring Mckenna Grace and Isaiah Russell-Bailey with a featured role played by Kid Cudi, drew mostly positive reviews around its debut on the streaming service on May 12. Roughly seven weeks later, “Crater” has been pulled from Disney+.
The original report follows.
Disney’s content culling from Disney+ and Hulu is coming as early as next week — with the media company pulling off more than 50 titles, including series “Willow,” “The Mysterious Benedict Society” and “Dollface,” and movies such as “The One and Only Ivan.”
At the same time, CEO Bob Iger told investors last week that the company expects to raise the price on the ad-free Disney+ tier later...

The biggest strength of Crater has to be its final ten minutes, which feel like savoring a great dessert after what was a decent meal at best. To a great extent, it feels like a silly attempt at a Stranger Things recreation in a different setting, especially the way the five main characters are written. Sure, kids are all the same, but these five are an awful lot like Mike, Will, Dustin, Lucas, and Max. There is no Eleven, though, and no demogorgon mind flayer stuff, either. For a movie that is set entirely on the moon, the villains here are rather wordly: class struggle, capitalism, and the exploitation of the poor.
But seamlessly integrating all these in the narrative of a Disney movie, whose target audience is mainly kids and teenagers, is a herculean task. And the movie couldn’t exactly pull off Oscar Martinez explaining “what does surplus...

Crater is a film starring Mckenna Grace, Billy Barratt, Isaiah Russell-Bailey and Orson Hon.
Disney, when it does what it knows how to do, does it to perfection, and these films for young people have managed, by repeating the formula, to master it to the exact level of emotion required, almost becoming a cultural icon. Crater does not limit itself to repeating the formula story wise, but it does it in the tempos, achieving the desired effect: to win over the viewer for good.
Others will say it is sentimental, superfluous and a space adventure to forget.
It’s up to them.
As a production, as always and we never get tired of saying it (and it also serves as filler), it’s magnificent on a technical level.

Within the first four minutes of Disney+ Original film “Crater,” we already have a cavalcade of movie tropes to contend with: dead parents, spaceships, and a 72-hour ticking clock for one newly-orphaned tween to say farewell to his friend group. At least we know Disney hasn’t shied away from its classic storylines.
Part “Guardians of the Galaxy” and part “Goonies” with a dash of “Outer Banks,” “Crater” centers on Caleb Channing (a well-cast Isaiah Russell-Bailey), who was raised on a lunar mining colony by his single dad (Scott “Kid Cudi” Mescudi). After the death of his father, Caleb becomes a ward of the state, poised to reap the “death benefits” from his father’s work contract with the colony. As part of said benefits, Caleb is supposed to be put in a cryosleep and transported to distant planet Omega, which takes 75 years to reach.

Some straight-to-streaming offerings inspire viewers to bemoan the movie’s fate, wishing it had received a proper theatrical release — to be seen the way movies are meant to be seen, and by the widest audience possible. “Crater” isn’t one of those, but neither is this Disney+ original mere algorithm-created dross. Kyle Patrick Alvarez’s lunar adventure follows five young friends as they hijack a rover to visit an enigmatic crater for one last hurrah before one of them leaves the moon forever. It’s sci-fi informed by a Gen-z sensibility, with a particular focus on those Zoomers who can’t imagine a bright future on the planet they actually inhabit — an ever-expanding demographic, one imagines.

On May 23, HBO Max becomes simply Max, but it will still be home to HBO series. Got that? Good. Because there’s plenty to watch on HBO, Max, all the other streaming services and networks and it’s a busy month in theaters, too.

Family Reunion is coming to an end.
Netflix on Monday handed out a renewal for a third and final season of the multicamera comedy.
This also marks the lowest episode order for the series, down from 20 and 15 episodes in seasons one and two, respectively.
Series creator Meg DeLoatch had handed over the showrunning duties to Adrienne Carter (Everybody Hates Chris) and Arthur Harris (Living Single).
DeLoatch will still have a creative involvement, but she will not be running the show on a day-to-day basis for the final episodes.
DeLoatch was named the showrunner of the CBS comedy series The Neighborhood, complicating a return to Family Reunion full-time.
“I am so excited that Family Reunion will be returning for a third season,” said DeLoatch in a statement.
"I will always be grateful to Netflix for giving me the opportunity to finally tell my story and the platform to share the beautiful,...

Netflix renewed family sitcom “Family Reunion” for a 10-episode third and final season.
The series follows the McKellan family who moved from Seattle to Georgia in the series premiere to be closer to extended family. Now there are three generations living in the same house, and house is stuffed full of people. During the first two seasons, which were split into two parts each, the characters had to adjust to their new lifestyle, which included three-hour church services and “huge humidity hair,” as the network puts it. As complicated as things could be, there has been a lot of family bonding and learning and growing along the way, as well, and the final season should continue that pattern.

Thank god for directors like Robert Rodriguez. Directors who still have the capacity, passion and vision to make the movie they want to make… I love horror, I also love sci-fi, I definitely love action and sometimes… not always… but sometimes, I do love a good rom-com. Yet there are moments when a certain director releases a movie that has you excited by the sheer mention of it and when it comes to Robert Rodriguez nothing gets me more excited than an action-adventure effects-laden superhero flick for kids. Netflix is developing a sequel to Robert Rodriguez’s newly released superhero pic “We Can Be Heroes.”
The movie, which draws from the young heroes in the director’s “Spy Kids” franchise and “The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl,” follows the children of Earth’s superheroes, whose parents have been kidnapped by alien invaders. The children are left with no choice but to work together to save their parents and the world.
Rodriguez, a veteran of superhero movies starring children, recently directed “Alita: Battle Angel,” as well as “Sin City” and its follow-up, “Sin City: A Dame to Kill for.” Along with Rodriguez, “We Can Be Heroes” was produced by Racer Max and executive produced by Ben Ormand. The movie hails from Double R Productions.

Robert Rodriguez famously made his first feature, “El Mariachi” (1993), for $7,000, and in the years since he’s made a point, rather charmingly, of staying in touch with that DIY side of himself. This first became apparent in the early 2000s, when he churned out three “Spy Kids” films in a row, working out of a home studio where he wrote, directed, edited, and shot these cheeky Bondian kiddie flicks with a gizmoid invention as airy and frictionless as the films’ homegrown FX — but in a way it all played as a sly poke at Hollywood becoming a big-budget toy factory. The joke still had a tinge of resonance in “The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl 3-D” (2005), a superhero lark that had the benefit of coming out three years before “Iron Man” — that is, before the culture became so inundated with comic-book mythology that it began to wink at its own top-heavy escapism.

Full of action and heart, We Can Be Heroes stars YaYa Gosselin, Pedro Pascal, Priyanka Chopra Jonas, Boyd Holbrook, Christian Slater, Chris McDonald, Adriana Barraza, with Vivien Lyra Blair, Isaiah Russell-Bailey, Akira Akbar. Robert Rodriguez is developing a new superhero project for Netflix called We Can Be Heroes and he’s starting to fill up it’s ensemble with actors such as Christian Slater (Mr. Robot), YaYa Gosselin (FBI Most Wanted, The Purge), Akira Akbar (Captain Marvel, This Is Us) and Pedro Pascal.
The story follows “the children of Earth’s superheroes after their parents have been kidnapped by alien invaders. The children must team up and learn to work together if they want to save their parents and the world.”
Yeah, that seems like the kind of film project that Robert Rodriguez would want to make. It’s not the first time he’s dabbled in action films that center around kids like the Spy Kids franchise and The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl. He most recently helmed that badass feature film adaptation of Alita: Battle Angel.
