Simona Calo is a screenwriter and director captivated by the power of storytelling and film. Born in Italy and now living in England, she continues to explore bold, human-centred narratives across genres and formats.
In her two most recent projects, she had the opportunity to work with talents such as Christopher Lambert, Fortunato Cerlino, and Francesca Inaudi (Eyes Everywhere), as well as Franco Nero, Saadet Aksoy, and Edoardo Purgatori (Wired on the Edge). The soundtrack of Eyes Everywhere features music by Skin (Skunk Anansie).
Additionally, her documentary on AI, Connected: The New Post-Human Species, is available on Prime Video and Apple TV in 74 countries.
Simona is also the writer and director of The Good Dads, an Oscar-qualifying animated short about a single mother's search for a father figure for her autistic son after being abandoned by her husband.
Over the years, Simona has explored a range of social issues through short narrative films. DAY 4 examines a complicated relationship between a mother and her son; Hasty Decisions looks at youth violence and bullying; and Ovunque ma non qui (Anywhere but Here) portrays the impact of domestic violence.
Her documentary Vicolo degli onesti (Honest Men's Alley) sheds light on medical malpractice in Italy, featuring contributions from Piero Chiambretti, Gherardo Colombo, and Antonello Soro.
During the pandemic, she directed The New Normal, a unique short film shot entirely during lockdown. The actors, based in different countries, never met or spoke directly.
Simona's earlier works include E poi la fine (And Then the End Shall Be), a documentary on Italian painter Dario Chiericallo.
Her work has been recognised at international film festivals and she was a semi-finalist at the 2018 Golden Plume competition in Cannes for her screenplay The Dark Side of the Law.
