New Western Movie Reuniting Arrow Stars Now Streaming for Free
Image
Calamity Jane has premiered on Tubi and is now streaming for free. The new Western reunites CW's Arrow co-stars Emily Bett Rickards and Stephen Amell.

Rickards stars as the titular character in Calamity Jane, which makes its AVOD premiere as a Tubi original. Rickard's Calamity Jane embarks on a revenge mission to kill Crooked Nose Jack after he murders her husband-to-be, Wild Bill Hickok, portrayed by Amell. Rickards and Amell famously played Felicity Smoak and Oliver Queen, respectively, in the fan-favorite DC show Arrow. The pair reunited again to play lovers in the Samuel Goldwyn Films-produced Western, which also stars Tim Rozon, Priscilla Faia, Gage Marsh, Garrett Black, Christian Sloan, Troy Mundle, and Spencer Borgeson. Terry Miles directed the film.

‘Festival of the Living Dead’ Review (Tubi Original)
Image
Stars: Ashley Moore, Camren Bicondova, Gage Marsh, Shiloh O’Reilly, Andre Anthony, Christian Rose | Written by Miriam Lyapin, Helen Marsh | Directed by The Soska Sisters

Festival of the Living Dead is not only the latest Tubi Original, it’s the latest film from Jen and Sylvia Soska. That’s a bit of a come down for the sisters, who, after Dead Hooker in a Trunk and American Mary, were loudly proclaimed to be the future of horror. Dave Parker, who was in the same position some years back, recently used a Tubi Original, You Shouldn’t Have Let Me In to prove he can still make an entertaining film. Can the Soska Sisters do the same?

Ash and Iris are looking to do something to celebrate Ash’s birthday. Her boyfriend Kevin and some friends stop by with a birthday present, tickets to the titular Festival of the Living Dead.

It Lives Inside Ending Explanation
Image
Hollywood doubled down on demonic possession in 2023, tapping into the genre's lasting appeal with films like Evil Dead Rise. It Lives Inside takes a unique twist on the possession sub-genre, blending Hindu traditions and supernatural battles for Samidha's soul. The film's bittersweet ending leaves Samidha as the vessel for the malevolent demon, setting up a potential sequel with a cold, cruel twist.

The following contains spoilers for It Lives Inside.

Throughout 2023, Hollywood leaned into the demonic possession genre harder than usual. Horror fans reveled in Russell Crowe's Father Gabriele Amorth in The Pope's Exorcist, not to mention, Evil Dead Rise, which terrified audiences with the latest generation of Deadites. These films reinforced the idea that this niche sub-genre is one studios think audiences will always flock to, and rightfully so. Such films usually do well at the box office, despite critics usually panning their ilk as a rule.

George A. Romero at an event for Land of the Dead (2005)
Festival of the Living Dead trailer: Soska Sisters’ Romero follow-up starts streaming this Friday
George A. Romero at an event for Land of the Dead (2005)
George A. Romero’s 1968 classic Night of the Living Dead is in the public domain, so a lot of people have made their own sequels and remakes to the film over the decades, put out their own releases of it, colorized it, animated it, etc. It’s a property that has never been dormant… but these days it seems like its undead ghouls are livelier than ever. The George A. Romero Foundation and the Cinedigm-backed Bloody Disgusting are making a podcast sequel called The Dead. Nikyatu Jusu is directing a film sequel that will be released by MGM. Greg Nicotero is planning to make a movie about the making of Night of the Living Dead. Directors Jen & Sylvia Soska (Rabid, American Mary) bring you back into the universe of George A. Romero’s Night of the Living Dead with Tubi Original Festival of the Living Dead, and Bloody Disgusting has been exclusively provided with the official trailer today.

Festival of the Living Dead will bite into Tubi on April 5. The new zombie film is set decades after Night of the Living Dead, centered on the grandchildren of that film’s main character.

The Soska Sisters tweet, “The film is a sequel to Romero’s masterpiece original Night of the Living Dead – the story follows Ben’s grandchildren 55 years after the incident.”

Ben was of course played by late actor Duane Jones in Romero’s Night of the Living Dead, who bravely battled the shambling undead before being killed by the film’s human villains.

Emily Bett Rickards & Stephen Amell in Western 'Calamity Jane' Trailer
Image
"There's too many of 'em." "It's just more targets..." Goldwyn Films has revealed their trailer for Calamity Jane, a western thriller arriving to watch in February. Currently set for release on VOD in about a week from now. After Wild Bill is killed in a poker game, Calamity Jane must break out of prison and seek revenge before the Deadwood's Sheriff can arrest them. Not to be confused with the actual classic western also called Calamity Jane from 1953 starring Doris Day. Directed by Terry Miles, Calamity Jane reunites Arrow co-stars Emily Bett Rickards and Stephen Amell, who star alongside Tim Rozon, Priscilla Faia, Gage Marsh, Garrett Black, Christian Sloan, Troy Mundle, and Spencer Borgeson. I will say that, sure, Emily looks pretty badass in it as a gun-slingin' Calamity Jane, though the rest of the film looks pretty bad. // Continue Reading ›...

Megan Suri in It Lives Inside (2023)
It Lives Inside: Megan Suri horror film reaches DVD in November
Megan Suri in It Lives Inside (2023)
The supernatural horror film It Lives Inside, which stars Megan Suri of the Netflix series Never Have I Ever, didn’t draw in many viewers when it reached theatres last Friday. It had an opening weekend of $2.6 million and finished in seventh place on the top 10. Maybe it will do better when it reaches home video – and we can confirm that Distribution Solutions, a division of Alliance Entertainment, will be giving the film a DVD release on November 7th. Copies are available for pre-order at This Link. We don’t have any information on a Blu-ray or 4K release at this time, but Amazon is also accepting pre-orders for the Prime Video digital release.

It’s a shame It Lives Inside didn’t have better box office, as it was good enough to earn an 8/10 review from JoBlo’s own Tyler Nichols. That review can be read Here. The film...

‘It Lives Inside’ Is More Metaphor Than Horror Movie
Image
What the fuck is in that jar?

That’s the first question that It Lives Inside throws at you, and the one that has Samida (Never Have I Ever‘s Megan Suri) wondering if it has something to do with the odd behavior of her classmate, Tamira (Mohana Krishnan). Once upon a time, these two first-generation Indian-Americans were the closest of friends. Then, as they got older, Samida started going by “Sam,” began distancing herself from her cultural identity, and chose to hang with a newer, “cooler” (read: Caucasian) crowd.

‘It Lives Inside’ Review: A Horror Debut About First-Generation Immigrants Falls Short of Its Potential
Image
The encounter in the girls locker room initiates the nightmare scenario of It Lives Inside, Bishal Dutta’s jagged feature debut about a small town besieged by an ancient spirit.

Samidha (Megan Suri) and Tamira (Mohana Krishnan) stand across from each other in the dimly lit aisle, exchanging weighted stares. Culture and a shared history bind the two teenagers, whose reputations differ at their small, white suburban high school. Samidha goes by Sam now — an attempt to close the gap between her Indian culture and the American one embodied by her classmates. She would prefer to loiter around a campfire with her crush (Gage Marsh) than help her mother (Neeru Bajwa) prepare for puja.

Tamira is a more shadowy figure; her character seems mostly to be Sam’s opposite. The young woman, dressed in drab and ill-fitting clothes, sticks out. She inspires stares, whispers and jokes. When she shuffles through the hall,...

‘It Lives Inside’ Review: A Generic Horror Movie Tries to Mine Scares from the Complexity of Being a First-Generation Immigrant
Image
Horror films are uniquely effective at giving tangible shape to our most abstract demons, and so it often feels somewhat perverse when a genre exercise chooses to subvert its own potential by creating a monster we can’t really see. Dull and disappointing as the actual results might be, Bishal Dutta’s “It Lives Inside” at least has good reason to go with a creature who’s (mostly) shown through sounds and shadows: The ancient Dharmic flesh-eater Pishacha is formed by and feeds off the negative energy of its victims, and visibility itself is the greatest source of that negative energy among the Indian-American high school girls the creature is feasting on when the film begins.

Played by “Never Have I Ever” breakout Megan Suri (who’s far more capable than this movie requires her to be), Samidha is introduced standing in the bathroom of her immigrant parents’ house and...

Bishal Dutta, the film stars Megan Suri, Neeru Bajwa, Mohana Krishnan, Vik Sahay, Gage Marsh, Beatrice Kitsos and Betty Gabriel.

When a mythological demonic spirit latches onto her former best friend, she must come to terms with her heritage in order to defeat it.

About, It Lives Inside, Bishal Dutta said in an earlier interview, “On one hand, it is a love letter to the community and culture that raised me while on the other, it is a visceral experience that is designed to instill the same raw terror in its viewers that my favorite horror films instilled in me.”

‘It Lives Inside’ Trailer #2 Delivers the Chills
Image
Neon’s second trailer for It Lives Inside is incredibly creepy without being too spoiler-ish. Written and directed by Bishal Dutta, the PG-13 horror film is a unique twist on a demonic possession story.

“It Lives Inside emerged as an image: a kid on a bike, riding through Rockwellian suburbs. It’s right out of an early Amblin film. But what if this kid was escaping a puja, her school outfit wrapped in an ornate dupatta? For me, that image spoke to the duality I felt growing up as a first-generation immigrant in America. ‘Where do I belong? Which country is my home? Which world is ultimately mine?'” explained Dutta.

The cast includes Megan Suri, Neeru Bajwa, Mohana Krishnan, Vik Sahay, Gage Marsh, Beatrice Kitsos, and Betty Gabriel.

Get Out‘s Raymond Mansfield and Sean McKittrick served as producers. Edward H. Hamm Jr, Jameson Parker, Arielle Boisvert, and Shawn Williamson executive produce.

Second Trailer for Extremely Scary Supernatural Horror 'It Lives Inside'
Image
"The Pishach doesn't kill you right away... it feeds on you slowly." Neon has debuted another official trailer for the horror film titled It Lives Inside, a strong feature debut from filmmaker Bishal Dutta. It premiered at the 2023 SXSW Film Festival where it won the Midnight Audience Award. Sam is desperate to fit in at school, rejecting her Indian culture & family to be like everyone else. When a mythological demonic spirit latches onto her former best friend, she must come to terms with her own heritage in order to defeat it. The initial inspiration emerged from the filmmaker's experiences of being born in India, and raised in America. The story is based on a Hindu demonic legend and a very personal family story from Dutta's grandfather. Starring Megan Suri as Samidha, Neeru Bajwa, Mohana Krishnan, Betty Gabriel, Vik Sahay, and Gage Marsh. This looks utterly terrifying, with some seriously...

It Lives Inside Review: A Frustratingly Nonchalant Spin on Demonic Horror
Bishal Dutta
American horror films featuring demons generally have a Christian bent, so a Hindu spin on this subgenre is enticing for its potential to breathe new life into well-trodden terrain. But while Bishal Dutta’s It Lives Inside follows through on its promise of representation in terms of its cast full of Indian and Indian American actors, the film’s attempts at actual cultural specificity are about as nuanced as a “very special episode” of a Disney sitcom.

It Lives Inside offers a brief peek at Hindu religious festivities inside Samidha’s (Megan Suri) house, and Sam’s loving mother, Poorna (Neeru Bajwa), primarily speaks to her daughter in Hindi. One gets a sense that the girl’s feelings of shame are tied to her sense of otherness (she’s one of only two Indian Americans at her high school), but otherwise there’s little to distinguish Sam from the disaffected...

‘It Lives Inside’ Horror Film Sets a September Release
Image
Neon’s set a September 22, 2023 theatrical release date for the creepy horror film It Lives Inside. The coming-of-age horror debuted at SXSW and took home the Midnighter Audience Award.

The trailer shows two Indian teenagers going face-to-face with a demonic creature, and writer/director Bishal Dutta says his inspiration came from growing up on American horror movies.

“After I moved to North America from India at the age of four, a lot of my social education came from watching American horror films. I always wondered, what were families like mine doing while Bruce the shark tore through Amity’s waters, while Freddy Krueger slashed teenagers in the dreamscape, and while Jack Torrance chased his son through the maze-like halls of the Overlook?’ As it developed, It Lives Inside formed its own dual identity much like mine,” explained Dutta. “On one hand, it is a love letter to the community and...

The Soska Sisters Set to Direct Tubi's Festival of the Living Dead
Image
George A. Romero's Night of the Living Dead is getting a new sequel of sorts. Deadline reports that Jen Soska and Sylvia Soska, aka the Soska Sisters, are directing a new film called Festival of the Living Dead that will acknowledge the events of Romero's first zombie movie. In development for the free streaming service Tubi, the film will also star Ashley Moore (I Know What You Did Last Summer) and Camren Bicondova (Gotham) in the lead roles. The script comes from Helen Marsh and Miriam Lyapin. Jacob Nasser is producing.

Festival of the Living Dead is set more than 50 years after the events of Night of the Living Dead, which was first released in 1968. That zombie attack has become the subject of morbid nostalgia in recent years, which has resulted in an event called the Festival of the Living Dead. Moore plays Ash, a young woman who...

Creepy First Trailer for Demonic Horror 'It Lives Inside' by Bishal Dutta
Image

It Lives Inside Review: This Indian Demon Movie Proves Scary Is Scary In Any Culture [SXSW 2023]
Image
Bishal Dutta's "It Lives Inside" is a demonic horror tale that plays recognizable genre hits with a cultural twist. The struggles of being non-white in America are carried by a high school girl who downplays her Indian heritage — only to have it come roaring back with a vengeance. Dutta doesn't hide influences in spotlight set pieces from "The Ring" to "It Follows" (intentional or not) because if it ain't broke, yadda yadda yadda? Scary is scary! "It Lives Inside" asserts its importance as an Indian-American ode to the outsiders stuck trying to live two separate lives and succeeds as a crossroads between international flavors and domestic horror mindsets.

Megan Suri stars as Indian teenager Samidha (Sam to her friends), an American girl with Indian heritage. At home, Samidha's mother Poorna (Neeru Bajwa) stresses the importance of traditions as a proud Indian woman. At Wooderson Grove High School, Sam spends...

‘It Lives Inside’ SXSW Review – Cultural Metaphor Gives Demonic Horror a Smart, Refreshing Update
Image
Writer/Director Bishal Dutta refreshingly gives a new spin on demonic possession for his feature film debut, It Lives Inside. Dutta uses a familiar framework of teen horror as an accessible introduction to underexplored mythology exacerbated by a cultural divide and adolescence. While Dutta wears his influences on his sleeves, the gnarly new demon and the complexities of its characters mark this director as one to watch.

Like most teens, Sam (Megan Suri) wants to fit in at school, so much so that she’s tried to distance herself from her cultural background as an Indian-American teen. This includes distancing herself from former childhood friend Tamira (Mohana Krishnan), who’s taken to carrying a strange jar around, to avoid staring looks and hushed whispers. Sam’s insecurities spike when a frazzled Tamira corners her in the locker room, begging for help with a parasitic evil. In a moment of disbelief and anger,...
