    Born Hubert E. von Herwarth, he was the son of the German military attaché in Washington, and a former second lieutenant in the German Army under the Kaiser, a veteran of World War One, and taken prisoner by the Rainbow Division in the Argonne. Returning to the USA, he devoted his time to performing in English language plays, translating them into German, and working in subordinate roles in silent films.
