Chicago – Patrick McDonald of HollywoodChicago.com audio film review for “Better Nate Than Ever – a new live action film from Walt Disney Studios, – an adaptation by writer/director Tim Federle from his own 2013 novel, streaming on Disney+ beginning Friday, April 1st.
Rating: 3.5/5.0
13-year-old Nate Foster (Rueby Wood) is obsessed with Broadway theater and the spotlight of the stage. He’s also a less-than-popular Pittsburgh middle schooler and punching bag for his older brother Anthony (Joshua Bassett), who is a popular jock. When Nate doesn’t get the lead in the school musical, he and friend Libby (Aria Brooks) take a bus to New York City so Nate can participate in an open audition for a musical version of Lilo & Stitch. While in town, he also seeks to connect with his mother’s estranged sister, Aunt Heidi (Lisa Kudrow), who is also an actor. Things get complicated when Nate gets a callback,...

Much like Don Lockwood’s “Broadway Melody” hero in Singin’ In The Rain, this title kid’s “gotta’ dance”. And sing. And, well, just be on the stage. Any stage, but one on the “great white way”…someday. Yes, this is another tale of a youngster following his “dream” while trying to survive small-town life. Plus he’s trying to keep that dream alive, protecting it from being crushed by those that just don’t “get it”. In this original Disney feature film, this dreamer’s determined to prove he’s got the “chops” because when his big breaks looms, everyone will realize that it’s Better Nate Than Ever. And he’s not gonna be late.
So when we meet Nate (Rueby Wood) early on a school day morning,...

What hooks and disarms audiences minutes after clicking play on “Better Nate Than Ever” is its infectious energy. George Benson’s funk cover of “On Broadway,” used decades earlier in “All That Jazz,” makes for a lively introduction to a spirited, small-statured youth’s big personality. Writer-director Tim Federle welcomes us into this world with the tantalizing promise of major things to come in a semi-biographical tale of an underdog chasing his dream of becoming a Broadway sensation. But before that can happen, a series of hapless, comedic misadventures has to occur. Funny, vibrant, yet schmaltzy to a fault, this Disney Plus family film can carry a tune, but falters in crafting a runaway hit.

Olivia Rodrigo has shifted almost entirely into pop star mode, but she’s keeping one foot in the door at her old Disney+ stomping grounds, at least for now. According to Entertainment Tonight, the actress-turned-chart topper will reprise her lead role as Nina Salazar-Roberts on High School Musical: The Musical: The Series as a recurring character for season three.
The presence of Rodrigo’s character was notably diminished in the early episodes of season two, which was filmed in Salt Lake City — pre-“Drivers License” — during the making of her debut album Sour.
