Joseph Howard Rood was born in Albuquerque, New Mexico in 1975 and grew up in the Village of Los Ranchos de Albuquerque. He became interested in making films in high school, and in 1991 founded Ghoul Inc. Productions. His first films, shot between 1991 and 1994, were mostly horror, and were shot on his dad's camcorder and edited by hooking two VCR's together. Most of these films are unfortunately lost, but a few are still around. After graduating in 1994, "adulting" (among other things) got in the way of film making, and it wasn't until 2013 that Rood began taking an interest in making films again. It was also in 2013 that Rood met his future best pal and film collaborator Alex Lopez. Now residing in El Paso, Texas, Rood decided to use the Ghoul Inc. moniker and bring it back from the dead. The name, however, is a bit of a misnomer, because his film interests have evolved to include many genres outside horror.
An admitted "old school" film fan, Rood counts among his many influences such greats as Roger Corman, Larry Buchanan, Herschell Gordon Lewis, Ted V. Mikels, S.F. Brownrigg, Frank Henenlotter, Ed Wood, and Dario Argento, to name but a few. He is rather smugly proud of the fact that he has not seen 90% of the films released by Hollywood in the last 20 years, has a general distaste for CGI, and really wants nothing to do with the film industry. Making movies is his hobby, his creative outlet, and his passion.
