Was nominated for Broadway's Tony Award as Best Director (Play) five
times: in 1976 for Jules Feiffer's "Knock, Knock," in 1980 for Lanford Wilson's
"Talley's Folly," in 1981 for Lanford Wilson's "Fifth of July," in 1983 for
Lanford Wilson's "Angels Fall," and in 1985 for "As Is." He was awarded the 2016 Tony Award for Lifetime Achievement.
He also received six Obie Awards for his work Off-Broadway.
