Born in 1984, Huu-Tuan Nguyen is known for his directorial debut in Danh Cho Thang Sau, a Vietnamese independent feature-length film which was released in 2012. The film won the Jury Prize in the 18th Vietnam National Film Festival (2013). His first experience with cinema was in 2004, when he was an architectural student at Hanoi Architectural University. Soon after that, Nguyen decided to turn his focus on film-making totally since 2007. Despite his late involvement with the film industry in Vietnam, he is the first director who was born in the 80s, released a feature film. His second film, My Son, Where Are You is a family movie that was released in December 2018. Aside from being a pioneer in independent filmmaking whose films inspired younger Vietnamese filmmakers to come forward, Nguyen becomes the mentor of some. He considers teaching as an equally important mission as making film.
