You don't hear much about Jerome Tanner, a prolific pornographer who made quite a few interesting videos back in the day. "Lady Luck" displays some of the charm of his unpretentious work.
Clocking at a trim 69 minutes in length, it's a fun picture that takes a somewhat picaresque approach to story telling, that hit me just the right way. Nowadays one expects the strained, over-thought-out (think endless storyboards) style of say an art-house hit like "Amelie", but there is much to be said for a simpler, more organic style like Tanner's.
Protagonist is Dale DaBone, who wins $500 from a scratch-off lottery ticket he found in the parking lot on the way to work. The brief saga of coincidences and unlikely hook-ups that follow is light and fluffy and ultimately entertaining, while providing the requisite five hot sex scenes along the way.
What especially impressed me was Tanner's veering away from conventional casting, as in each era of porn history it seems like the same actresses (and especially actors as hired dicks) appear in film after film with only an few fresh faces tossed in to alter the tedium. Instead, Tanner has five very sexy women here, only one of which Kelsey (Heart) is a notable performer. Italian import Nina Ferrari is an eyeful in an extraneous but delightful sex scene of a couple having sex on a park bench, while Claudia Adkins and Salina Del Ray both deserve wider appreciation. The oddly named Drew Hurley is also appealing, but her career was mired in gonzo assignments.
As in all good films of this genre, the story of the lottery ticket comes full circle, and Tanner provides a logical and satisfying ending to a quality diversion, atypical for Adult Cinema.
