Most of the film was shot in Wiltshire, at the Avebury Stone Circle and the mysterious Sacred trees with its big entwined roots. The "blasted heath" in the wild hills west of the fictional town of Arkham and the "evil water" sequences were filmed in the Dartmoor region, known from Arthur Conan Doyle's "The Hound of the Baskervilles". In Doyle's novel, the ground was cursed since Hugo Baskerville chased a woman to death in the era of the English Civil War.
