In the 1860s, Abraham Lincoln led the nascent Republican party to save the nation and its fundamental, guiding principles. The Republicans fulfilled the promise established by the founders and abolished slavery.

The Democratic Party and the Republican Party did not "switch sides". The Republican party didn't switch. The Democratic Party was (and still is) the party of plantation politics, the party of racism and racial segregation. The Democratic party used the power of State government to implement and enforce Jim Crow laws, forcing individual private citizens to segregate on the basis of skin color.) They unleashed the Ku Klux Klan (the militant, terrorist arm of the Democratic Party) to use violence and murder to oppress African Americans, to threaten Southern "scalawags", and intimidate Republican "carpetbaggers".
If there was a big switch, it was the Democratic Party that changed up their tactics. Their nefarious schemes using the power of State government was eventually foiled. That's when the Democrats made their switch: to use the power of the Federal government to establish a new plantation. The genius is that they've hoodwinked denizens of the plantation to vote consistently to keep the overseers of the plantation in power.
