Hugely enjoyable from start to finish

Gianni Schicchi is Puccini's only comedy, and to me it is a masterpiece. This is a terrific and hugely enjoyable production, while the opera is quite short, it is fast paced and uproariously funny, very like this 2004 production of it. The comedy is beautifully timed, Puccini's ever-lovely music is performed by the orchestra beautifully and the conducting is brisk and sensitive. Quality of sound and camera work are good, likewise with the costumes and sets. The principals are all excellent, with the relatives appropriately scheming and Patrizia Ciofi on top of a poignant O Mio Babbino Caro shows talent for comedy. Best of all is the superb performance of Alessandro Corbelli, a very firm and hilarious performance without ever falling into caricature. All in all, a hugely enjoyable performance. 10/10 Bethany Cox
