Tout est pardonné

This is a remarkable debut - confident in its structure and in its storytelling, but slight overall, and packs less of an emotional punch than I think it wants to deliver. A sense of near-verité pervades the scenes as the camera seems to almost intrude on scenes of domestic (dis)harmony, and drugged-up parties, but when the narrative takes more dramatic turns, the actors and the film aren't up to the challenge. Constance Rosseau is luminously beautiful (Check out the poster image) but she can't convey the confusion, distress, and mixed feelings her character is asked to deliver late in the movie, and the movie falls down as a result.

This is the first Mia Hansen-Løve directed movie I have seen, but with this confident a debut, I know I need to see more. An honourable failure.
