This whole documentary series is as it says on the tin. World football legend Maradona giving what turns out to be his last shot on the frontline of football following his recent passing away (RIP).
On paper this should be car crash TV, with Maradona self-confessing to his drug problem, arriving to coach a side in a city infamous for its links to the drugs trades. However, he proves everyone wrong, and is quite a talisman to the side who fighting to promotion to the top tier in Mexican football (a league often the butt of jokes around the football world).
This documentary thus is very interesting, but it's not a hagiography. It's warts and all and we see Maradona's temper, but also his compassion. You see that despite all the money in the world, the only two things that really make him happy are his family and football on the ground. He has humour and warmth, and despite all the vagaries in his career, you can't help but warm to him and wish him well as he tries to seek redemption.
The documentary is overlong, and could have been a few episodes shorter without any loss of information, but that's a repeat problem nowadays with Netflix I'm finding.
It's well filmed, has humour, drama and a fascinating narrative. It's great to see something real on Maradona that doesn't need to concentrate on the seedier side of his past life. We have here a man seeking forgiveness and the success he had when younger. It's a challenge but you only end up wishing him well.
A fun viewing.
