Plot Summary
Two men struggle in Cuba. El Medico, a young Cuban doctor and musician, is trying to get a better life for his family. Michel, a European music producer, wants fame and fortune. It is a fight between two minds; One sees the music as an authentic expression of Cuban culture and history, the other sees it as a commercial product to be sold by any means necessary. Caught in this clash of views is also Coquita, the young dancer whose dreams are ruined because Michel thinks she is not sexy enough, and El Medico's Mother who thinks her son is betraying the revolutionary ideals that she suffered for. El Medico realizes that being Michel's product is not his dream, but he has to decide between doing his duty to the State, as a doctor fulfilling his mothers dream, or being an artist.

Joy and Pain

While watching El Medico at GothenburgFilmFestival i felt such joy and also such pain. Joy for the music and creativity on the streets of Cuba. Pain for the everyday struggle of the Cubans and how they are treated by the Danish man. The film is about a Cuban doctor. He is a doctor because his mother wants him to. But in his mind he is a artist. When he finish his daily work at the hospital he makes salsa music. When a foreigner hears his music the foreigners understand that he can be rich if he produces the doctors music.

But problems arise when they start promoting the doctors music. The sexy promotion is not liked by the Cuban government. And the doctors mother thinks that this is not god for the revolution.

Still many days after the film i am thinking of it. Still many days after the film i am dancing inside myself.
