Skip to the OVERALL part if you don't want to read through all this. Though I recommend you read it.
A fan-made project can really only go so far. With unsatisfying timing for updates on the series to the incomprehensible plot, we have the beloved series, "Dragon Ball Absalon".
I actually thought this series had a chance when looking at the first episode. Dragon Ball Z clearly had its flaws. With this show, I thought "Hey! Without the forgetful Toriyama writing this script, this may be pretty nice!" Sadly, I was wrong.
As you can see on YouTube, the first episode got a ton of views whereas the next episodes pale in comparison. Well, with such a great fan-made project, why is it not getting the popularity it's said to deserve? Well, quite a few reasons, actually. Let's address them, shall we?
STORY: 1/10 | The story is nothing special. It continues from the poorly executed GT only to bring more disappointment. The plot is practically nonexistent and the time-line doesn't make much sense. I used to keep seeing comments saying "what's going on???" Well, they're not wrong for asking. Seriously, there needs to be some sort of explanation episode for this to actually go accordingly.
Another noteworthy problem is how slow the updates are. I know its a fan animation but do you really expect everyone to wait so long for low-tier content? I hear now he does decimal episodes which, hopefully, he can fit in bits of explanations to satisfy those who are confused.
CHARACTERS: 6/10 | They haven't experienced any sort of development and not much of them have really been introduced properly. They pretty much have the same main cast but the heroes are all able to immediately pull a SS3 out their arsenal whenever the situation calls for it. There was actually a legend that was established in the Frieza arc where they glorified the thought of using the SS1. Now that practically everyone can surpass the form, it was pretty much rendered meaningless.
ART/ANIMATION: 4/10 | I can appreciate the animation, especially the fight scenes. However, not everyone can tolerate it. When discussing about the show, people talk about how they "couldn't get into it", which sort of makes sense since the creator of this mini series isn't all that experienced. Nonetheless, the animation suffices.
The art is wonky at times but has a dark palette as opposed to the light DBS color settings used in early episodes.
SOUND: 8/10 | The opening song was the single best thing this project had to offer. The sounds during fight scenes are pretty nostalgic, so that's good too.
ENJOYMENT: 6/10 | I enjoy the fan animated, fast paced fights better than the repetitive and sequenced DBZ fights. However, they're not done by expert animators thus making them come off as a little lackluster to the viewers. Oher than the fights, I didn't enjoy anything. It was too damn tricky to comprehend anyway.
OVERALL: 3/10 | To be honest, this series isn't that good and it still has a long way to go if it wants to get better. It's gradually losing its potential and I am thinking of dropping it as many have already done. But, I'll stick around and see what more it has to offer in the future.
