On the surface, Fortune Dogs just seems like a simple storyline about a French Bulldog puppy trying to find his way home to his owner, but the best way I can describe the appeal of this show is that it's about the journey, and not the destination. There's a colorful cast of adorable puppy characters, at least one of which will surely become your favorite, but where the show truly excels at is its emotional moments.
If you watch the first four episodes or so, and feel like it's not grabbing your attention, I encourage you to stick with it, because this show really knows how to tug at your heartstrings with some simple, but very effective scenes and mini story arcs. The fact that most of the cast is comprised of dogs surely helps in creating a connection with the characters, (especially the protagonist, Freddy)
The soundtrack is also absolutely beautiful. I could listen to those gorgeous piano tracks all day long, and again, they just enhance the emotions of the scenes they play in.
To summarize, I think Fortune Dogs is a wonderful anime for all ages. There are tons of adorable moments for kids, but it doesn't shy away from some heavier stuff either, making it interesting for adults as well. It may have its fair share of flaws like filler some episodes that aren't very funny or engaging, as well as a huge tonal shift in its second half, but other than that, this series leaves a huge impact even with its short run of episodes.
Strongly recommended.
