Killer Cakes' Judging Needs a Recipe for Consistency
28 October 2024
Warning: Spoilers
"Killer Cakes" on Prime had a lot of potential, but the execution left much to be desired. One of the main issues was the lack of transparency in how the final votes were tallied. It felt like the judging criteria weren't consistently applied, and viewers were left scratching their heads at some of the decisions. For instance, the team that won had a cake with dry texture, while another team missed adding a bit more spice. Between dry cake and a slightly under-seasoned one, dry cake seems like a bigger flaw, yet the dry cake team still took the win.

Additionally, the level of detail on the birthday cake gone wrong was extraordinary, easily surpassing the craftsmanship on the baby food cake. The special effects were also more impressive on the cake that didn't win. It was confusing to see the team with superior design and effects lose because of a slight preference in flavor, especially when the judges seemed to praise the losing team's creativity and craftsmanship more.

There were also comments on proportion issues, but it seemed selective. The judges pointed out proportion flaws on one team but were silent on similar problems with the "pig" cake. If proportions matter, they should be judged equally across the board.

Finally, the decision to boot the team that nailed the "freezer" theme, creating the most realistic and anatomically precise pieces of the night, was baffling though I can somewhat understand this if their piece was unfinished.

I'm not a judge, just a viewer who think they should show how the votes were determined so there's a better understanding of the decision-making process.

I also think three episodes would work better where you have a final showdown between the two final groups. There's a whole trope in horror about the Final Girl and it would be cool to play on that. I would also like to see more than just the contestants walking off stage but something more theatrical. This is the platform that has The Boys, so there's room for more creativity here!

I disagree that the special effects team didn't have a noticeable input or value. We all saw the projective vomiting horror figure (which was awesome) and I hope we see more of that next season!
