Competent if unexceptional Swedish noir
23 December 2024
Hasse Ekman's "On A Bench In A Park" (1960) is a competent crime yarn, with one audacious plot surprise in the middle (somewhat reminiscent of the same year's "Psycho"), and one imaginative dream sequence. But it is also a very talky affair, leading to a too-pat ending. By the way, the main tune/melody sounded familiar, and after a while it clicked: it is the same as that of the title song of "Sous Les Toits De Paris" (1930), an early French sound film directed by Rene Clair which I just happened to watch recently! Besides that, I see no other connections between the two films. **1/2 out of 4.
