Bill (Charles Starrett) is a campus reporter writing a series of articles about life at college. He becomes fond of one of the co- eds but when a murder is committed in the college tower Lillian (Shirley Grey) is accused. Shirley Grey was in her thirties when she made this film so she was hardly a college girl. She was also supposed to be working her way through college singing in a night- club but you never heard her singing or saw the nightclub.
In 1933 Ruth Hall was in a short called "Hollywood on Parade" which introduced several Hollywood starlets (Mary Carlisle, Patricia Ellis, Gloria Stuart etc) who were chosen as "stars of tomorrow". Surprisingly she didn't have a big career - she may have wanted to concentrate on her marriage that same year. She was very pretty and was by far the most interesting person in the film. She played Ann Michaels, the second lead in this Chesterfield film - which is not saying much!!! Ann Michaels is a college girl who has pretty stylish rooms (grand piano, latest art deco furnishings)for a student.
Edward Van Sloan, of "Dracula" and "The Mummy" fame plays the professor who supplies Ann with an alibi. Ann is the one with the big secret. Even though Lillian is arrested for murder Ann is the one acting suspiciously. Maurice Black (a popular poverty row character actor) plays Blackie Atwater, who in reality is Ann's father and is trying to protect her reputation. J. Farrell MacDonald, a great character actor plays the chief of police.
Charles Starrett made quite a variety of films before he found fame in Westerns with the Durango Kid.
Worth a look.
