Wrestling (2008)
8/10
Nicely Done Coming Of Age Drama
15 January 2009
Wrestling is about wrestling with emotions. It is a quiet, sweet, gentle tale about a boy who has lost his mother who falls in love with a girl who has recently lost her boyfriend. Like Garden State, this movie does not resort to any formulas or cheap Hollywood gimmicks. It tells a simple story that is based in reality about loving and losing. Just about everyone in the story has suffered a loss. Everyone is trying to overcome their grief in order to muster the trust needed to establish new relationships. Overall, the acting in Wrestling is superb, which is quite a feat considering the broad range of emotion demanded from the cast. Particular recognition needs to be given to Jeff Conoway for the loving portrayal of a father still obsessed with his long lost wife, and also to Lauren Schneider for the touching subtlety of her performance. The soundtrack keeps this drama moving without becoming cheesy. Impress your girlfriend and bring this one home with you tonight.
