Review of For Flow

For Flow (2010)

As a true fan of hip-hop, and an understanding of what it means to be an "MC" (and not just a rapper) I could truly appreciate this film's depiction of two young men's quest for something "greater." But beyond that, and without saying more than necessary, the film contains socioeconomic undertones, as it explores "urbanness," gender, the excitement that chasing and realizing the "American dream" brings to individuals, among other topics. This is amplified, as is the case here, when the "dream" is also a way out, and the stakes are even higher. For most in these characters' situations, this may be the only shot they get (especially when it comes to music, and even more so when it comes to rap). The result is a film that exposes how people cope, prepare and think differently when faced with this situation. The short was gritty, authentic, and completely enjoyable.
