Spooner (2009)
9/10
magic on screen
11 December 2011
Well i just picked up a copy of spooner the other day and i have to say its the most charming film I've seen in years. It reminded me a lot of 500 days of summer but sweeter. Now i have to say I'm not a romantic comedy time watcher but occasionally I delve into a film of this ilk to balance all the horror titles I view. Matthew Lillard steals the show as the lovable Herman Spooner who is about to turn 30 and still lives at home. He works as a used car salesman at Manfretti Auto nearby his home. Herman Spooner is not a good salesman due to his unapothegic honesty towards his customers and hence ranks the lowest on the sales calendar. Herman Spooner is a simple man, sort of a boy trapped in a man's body but his innocent charm makes him so likable that you cant help but take a shine to him. One day he rescues the beautiful Rose played by Nora Zehetner whose car has broken down on the side of the road. This is where the magic begins with two people trying to change their lives. Rose takes an immediate interest in Spooner and their chemistry on screen is pure magic. I felt like i was the third wheel on a date that spread over a two day span. I'm not kidding it felt so real and a part of me thought if all of us out there had a little of Herman Spooner in us, the world would be a much better place. The movie doesn't take any Hollywood backroads at all and sticks to the formula at hand without getting too cute for its own good. For years now when I've seen the name Matthew Lillard and Nora Zehetner I've thought of the movies Scream and May well no longer now and forever it will be Spooner. Do yourself a favor and see this film, you will fall in love with it just like i did.
