Review of Belinda

Belinda (1988)
7/10
A passable indie drama
8 July 2017
A young dancer with ambitions to dance ballet starts working in a sleazy cabaret in Sydney in the late 60's. This extremely low budget Aussie film aspires to be a drama, but really doesn't have enough plot to succeed. The characters mostly meander around and interact with no narrative to drive them along. The cast is pretty good for such a low budget film, but you need a much better cast than this to succeed with this kind of film. The movie does pick up quite a lot of steam near the end with a really harrowing climax involving sexual assault and suicide. The film is based on the early career of director Pamela Gibbons.
