There's a real mix of user reviews here. I read the critics one's who all loved it, praising all the things that the few users who didn't like it mentioned. Have a feeling there's some trolling going on!
Nevertheless we thought it was an excellent movie, especially considering the low budget. There's a real sensitivity in the filmmaking and performances and it's definitely something I've never seen before.
It's really a revenge thriller disguised as a ghost story, with some excellent references to various myths, from Scottish to Greek. A lot of it is very subtle, which I genuinely relished, for once making me really pay attention, and work out myself.
My wife and daughter especially liked it and they were very happy that it wasn't a horror, which I think some of the 'troll' reviews had led us to believe. It's also part romance, part history drama with just enough hints at a supernatural edge to keep you alert.
In an interview with the filmmakers they mentioned wanting to work with the theme of how women's mental health was treated in the era, and I thought that was a clever slant to it all. I wish they'd been a bit more candid about that, would have been nice to see a bit more, but then again this is not a movie that just gives you everything, and I appreciate it for that.
Would watch again.
