It shouldn't be a mystery that this flopped. It must have seemed like a good idea, playing on Kudrow's past with the dreadful Friends; and yes, it's well written and performed; but it's *awkward*! - painful to watch. It's difficult for the viewer seeing the main character constantly snubbed and disdained. It doesn't strike that balance where you like her but still laugh at her failures. She needed to be more pompous, and have more power, like Britain's own Alan Partridge (at least in his earlier series). As it is the show wants too much sympathy for her.
Kudrow's performance maybe doesn't help - it is convincing but too brittle and too obviously pained. She's a good actress, but is she funny?
Btw the show they are making, the 'show within a show' is basically Man About The House - and that makes Lisa Kudrow Mildred Roper!
