1. I don't know why IMDb has chosen to list this opera under the Japanese title transliterated into English. It makes it harder to find it in the filmography for Gwyneth Jones, which I turned to when searching under Tristan was impossible. Foolish.
2.When Brangane (Hanna Schwarz) outshines her Isolde, especially in Act One, you have a major problem. I have Gwyneth Jones's Tannhauser video from 1978 when she was 42, and she is wonderful. A full, rich and powerful voice under perfect control: contrast that with this performance made when she was 57, the voice fraying at times and tentative. There is enough musicianship from all the singers to make this a satisfying experience, just not a thrilling one.
3. Thanks go to ARTHAUS MUSIK for putting out another fine production: sound, camerawork, lighting all topnotch.
