. . . plank probably originated with A DAY'S PLEASURE (which is surely the most ancient surviving film account of this practice). For more than a century now, America's Movers and Shakers have grown accustomed to confidently striding aboard a broad, as Chuck the Little Tramp improvises here. Now, and for many decades previously, whether a dude is boarding a cigar boat, gaming cruiser or private yacht, mounting up via the tramp steamer stroll makes him feel that he's atop the world. Prior to the advent of this flick, house-bound wives complained frequently that they "felt like doormats." Getting the Little Woman stretched out at the dock not only provides her with fresh air, but also with the satisfaction of doing something useful.
