Ensemble comedy packs a punch

Warning: Spoilers
THEY CAME TO ROB HONG KONG is another joint ensemble madcap action comedy caper from Hong Kong, featuring an endless who's who cast of notables and a general anything-goes kind of feel. It's similar in tone and scope to the LUCKY STARS productions and, while it doesn't have the expert fight action courtesy of Jackie, Sammo and Yuen, it still packs a punch. The film follows a traditional template with Kara Hui showing up and showing off as a bad-ass female cop in a running battle with scheming villain Roy Cheung. There's an early falling stunt up there with the likes of POLICE STORY and then some big hand-to-hand battles at the climax. The rest is like a sketchshow, with various oddballs interacting: Charlie Cho left holding the baby, Sandra Ng lusting after Dean Shek; Eric Tsang and Stanley Fung as the usual likeable con men; Chin Siu Ho as a martial arts whiz. Shing Fui-on shows up for a fun and likeable extended cameo, and it's all very amusing with some genuine laugh out loud moments. I liked it a lot.
