Had to Change Rating After Multiple Watches
18 February 2022
If you enjoy period pieces about the Napoleonic wars, this is a must see. Production wise it is every bit as good as Waterloo (with Rod Stiger and Christopher Plumber) and the Russian Epic War and Peace.

If you can't speak Russian, you will not enjoy this movie if you watch it only once because the subtitles are a little confusing and sparse. But the movie and subtitles improve dramatically during and after the scene when Sergy Ivanovich meets his bride. It takes multiple watches for non-Russian speakers to understand who is who and what their motivations are. Additionally, if you read the history of the Union of Salvation you will see that this movie is completely accurate.

This movie has a lot of parallels with the history unfolding now in Ukraine.
