Underestimated thriller... to be rediscovered
10 December 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I wasn't that excited to watch PUERTO VALLARTA SQUEEZE because of its pathetic score of 5,4 and only 15 reviews with mostly low scores, and the only known names in the cast are Scott Glenn and Harvey Keitel and the rest are folks who probably did only this movie and never acted again. To my surprise, I liked it. Now I am not saying it's great but not bad either. Let's see why.

Clayton Price (Glenn) is a rogue hit-man that has survived the Vietnam war (the movie is set in 1991) and has just killed a trapeze artist in a circus. After killing few other people in Puerto Vallarta he has to hide and asks to Danny Pastor and his wife Maria de la Luz Santos to go with them. The couple accepts despite some bickerings with Clayton, and at the same Clayton is pursued, unknown to him, by Walter McGrane (Keitel) who has a young apprentice by his side and wants to kill Clayton for personal reasons. After killing some more, Clayton will fake his death for living near the jungle with Maria de la Luz (since Danny thought they were both dead).

The acting by Glenn, Keitel and the other cast members was decent and the plot kept me interested. The shots of the town of Puerto Vallarta and of the nearby jungle were great considering the small budget, and the ending... was certainly a big surprise. However, I have to warn sensible viewers that is not a movie for the squeamish as there is a scene nearly the one hour mark where Clayton shoots in the heads two agents that were going to capture him. Overlooking this, it's a decent thriller that falls in the time passer category but nothing more.
