Not much chemistry, but I still rooted for a HEA

My Valentine Crush is a contemporary romance tale, with Krystal, portrayed by Shaquita Smith, caught in the throes of modern dating tribulations. The story kicks off with Krystal's efforts to create the perfect evening, only to have her boyfriend, Xavier, make a hasty exit after a brief rendezvous. The narrative then shifts to Krystal at work, where her internet troubles lead to a surprising encounter with Darryl, the cable repairman. As it turns out, Darryl, played by Jay Jones, shares a high school past with Krystal. Their initial interactions are undeniably flirty, yet, in my opinion, they lacked romantic chemistry.

The plot takes a twist when, later that same day, Darryl arrives at a party that Krystal is also attending, accompanied by another woman, Summer, portrayed by Jordan Walker. Krystal's curious nature and the unresolved tension from their earlier flirtations led her to give Darryl the third degree, which was pretty funny. They ditch the party and Summer, ending up at an open mic night, where Krystal performs. This magical evening blossoms into a date the following day.

However, their budding romance faces interruptions when Darryl's ex-wife appears during their date, and Krystal's commitment to her boyfriend casts a shadow. The storyline takes several twists and turns, with Krystal confessing her feelings for Darryl and vice versa to their friends. All of these events, I believe, transpired within the span of maybe three days. Notably, when Krystal decides to finally confess her feelings to Daryl-after he catches her with her boyfriend- he is with Summer again, who did not appreciate Krystal's interruption.

Throughout the movie, the potential conflict between Krystal's MBA status and Darryl's cable repair profession-a juicy trope for romance narratives-is left unexplored. While Krystal is a likable protagonist, the storyline often skims the surface of what could be a very intriguing plot.

Despite the lack of chemistry and lackluster storytelling, I found myself rooting for Darryl and Krystal to get together in the end. This was watchable, so giving it 5 stars.
