AwesomenessTV is adapting another young adult novel for digital screens, and for the second time, it’s turning to a top online video influencer to add some star power to its adaptation. Kian Lawley will play one of the two leads in Zac and Mia, a forthcoming romance series that will be distributed through Go90 and will be based off a book of the same name.

Lawley will star alongside Rachel Winters in the series, which will tell the story of two teens who become attached to one another while undergoing cancer treatments at the same hospital. With that plot, A.J. Betts’ original Zac and Mia book has drawn understandable comparisons to John Green’s The Fault In Our Stars, which is largely responsible for the trend of shows and movies inspired by Ya novels.

The ambitious entertainment company that snapped up FilmBuff last year has bought the content creator launched in 2014 by Max Benator and Marc Hustvedt.

The deal — financial terms were not disclosed — follows a strategic investment by Gunpowder & Sky in Supergravity in July 2015 in which the former took an equity stake and struck a feature co-production partnership.

The companies are working together on horror project Skate Or Die as well as Team Nocuous, a series about the world of competitive video gaming in conjunction with the Fine Brothers, Mad Cow Productions and Third String Kicker.

Benator and Hustvedt will segue from executive roles into a producing capacity across a number of existing projects.

Pre-production has started on the horror film Darkest Night, which is based on writer Michael Sean Erickson’s book of the same name released in late 2016 by Hot Chili Press. The film will begin shooting in Los Angeles, California, shortly.

Set to star Bill Oberst Jr. (Stressed to Kill), Robert Lasardo (Anarchy Parlor), Noel Gugliemi (Basement Jack), and Mykayla Sohn (The Chosen), Darkest Night tells the story of the Mudd family. Supergravity, which is known for producing, marketing and distributing feature films headlined by digital stars -- including Kian Lawley’s The Chosen -- has announced its foray into the talent management business with the formation of a new firm called Red Sun Entertainment. Red Sun will be focused on digitally-native creators, and will be led by founding partner Evan Weiss, alongside Supergravity co-founders Max Benator and Marc Hustvedt -- who is also a Tubefilter co-founder.

Weiss joins Red Sun from Studio71, where he formerly served as Evp and head of talent. This horror fan noticed a new horror film on this writer's Netflix queue - The Chosen. The film, from Terror Films and Supergravity Pictures, features Youtube superstar Kian Lawley. Lawley plays Cameron, a doting uncle, tasked with an inhuman murderous job. The film also stars Mykayla Sohn and Angelica Chitwood, with the film produced by Joe Dain, Jim Klock and Miles Fineburg. Now available on numerous platforms, a preview of the film's release is hosted here. From the story, Cameron's niece is corrupted by an ancient Jewish demon of lore - Lilith (Stefanie Estes). To save her, Cameron must kill six of his family members, to set Angie (Sohn) free. Can he do it? The film will also be available through Redbox. The Chosen will be available on this format in the middle of December. Though, this format will only be available to Americans as Redbox has recently pulled out of Canada.

In July, Supergravity Films brought The Chosen, a horror-thriller feature film led by social media star Kian Lawley, to Vimeo On Demand. A little more than a month later, the movie came to iTunes, which it ultimately rose to the top of the horror charts. Now, The Chosen is moving on to its next distribution platform: It has arrived on Netflix.

The Chosen’s availability on Netflix was secured thanks to a deal between Supergravity and the streaming video platform. The horror flick joins several other films led by YouTube stars that can also be viewed on Netflix. Camp Takota, starring Mamrie Hart, Hannah Hart, and Grace Helbig, is on there, as is Cameron Dallas vehicle Expelled.

Both Camp Takota and Expelled delivered strong sales through on-demand platforms before arriving on Netflix, and The Chosen is no different. Its rise to the top of the iTunes horror charts demonstrates the appeal of its young star.

Elliott Morgan, who has recently been the man of a thousand hosting gigs, is getting ready to release his own stand-up comedy spectacular. Morgan, who’s showed up everywhere from SourceFed to Mental Floss to Mashable to Buzzr over the past year and a half, has made his special Premature available for preorder through Vimeo On Demand.

Premature, which was first announced back in August, was filmed at Los Angeles’ El Cid bar. It contains some of Morgan’s recent material and a professional polish. "For one whole hour, I told jokes I've been working on for the past few years, and dare I say, I changed the life of every single audience member there," said Morgan in a press release. "But seriously, this was an amazing experience and I'm excited to be bringing my comedy into a different medium than people are used to seeing."

Supergravity Pictures is having a big VidCon weekend. The day before the debut of the feature film studio’s second movie, The Chosen, it has announced a strategic investment from Otter Media, the joint venture launched by The Chernin Group and At&T.

Otter Media, which also owns a controlling stake in top multi-channel YouTube network Fullscreen, will support Supergravity as the studio looks to expand its team and secure additional film deals. The investment will include a co-production partnership, through which we can assume Supergravity will work closely with the Fullscreen Films division, which has produced movies like #O2LForever.

Supergravity’s current lineup includes Man Up, which arrived on Vimeo On Demand in May, and The Chosen, which stars digital media star Kian Lawley. It’s upcoming projects include a documentary produced in partnership with Ray William Johnson.

Hartman is one of several guests who will participate in regular sessions at the Vimeo Studio during VidCon. The day after his event at Vimeo’s space, the two founders of Supergravity Pictures--Marc Hustvedt and Max Benator--will stop by to talk about their work converting digital video stars into feature film leads.

Supergravity, which launched in 2014, already has several films on its docket, including Kian Lawley vehicle The Chosen, which will premiere adjacent to VidCon. As Supergravity builds out its library, it is working closely with Vimeo On Demand, with which it struck a four-film deal this past January. We spoke to Benator about Supergravity’s plans, its partnership with Vimeo, and the increasing intertwined media landscape.

Tubefilter: What factors and trends led you to found Supergravity?...

Kian Lawley is getting his fans excited for his first feature film. The former member of the now-disbanded YouTube supergroup O2L released the official trailer for the horror flick The Chosen on his YouTube channel on June 24, 2015.

In The Chosen, Lawley plays Cameron, a young man who must decide to end the lives of six family members to save his niece, who’s been possessed by a child-snatching demon. The Chosen co-stars Mykayla Sohn and Elizabeth Keener, is produced by Terror Films and Supergravity Pictures, the film studio created by Max Benator and Marc Hustvedt for features starring YouTubers.

Lawley, who boasts over 2.7 million subscribers on his channel (and now has 1.3 million on his joint channel with Jc Caylen) originally released an exclusive teaser trailer for The Chosen at an event during Playlist Live back in February 2015. And this isn’t the first time Lawley has been involved with a feature film.

Since its launch in November 2014, Supergravity Pictures has worked with online video stars on feature film projects. At the same time, Vimeo has become an integral part of that budding industry by serving as a distribution platform for those feature films. Now, Supergravity and Vimeo have united their interests through a deal that will bring four of the studio’s films to Vimeo On Demand over the next year.

The first Supergravity film to arrive on Vimeo On Demand will be The Chosen, which will be available for download beginning on July 24th. The same day, the thriller--which stars YouTube personality Kian Lawley in its lead role--will premiere with a fan-friendly event adjacent to the VidCon convention in Anaheim.

AwesomenessTV, which recently announced a film-focused partnership with YouTube, has already produced several movies that will bring online stars to the big screen. Among other projects, the multi-channel network and digital media studio’s upcoming feature film pipeline includes a coming-of-age story called Shovel Buddies, which was revealed in March. Two months later, Shovel Buddies now has a principal cast: AwesomenessTV announced that Kian Lawley, Bella Thorne, and Alex Neustaedter will portray the film’s three main characters.

Lawley, Thorne, and Neustaedter will star as three friends of Sammy, a teenager who dies of leukemia. After finding a note from Sammy specifying how he would like to be buried, the three teens set off on an adventure to grant their friend’s last wish. The film’s screenplay, written by Jason Hellerman, appeared on the 2013 edition of the Black List, which notes the best unproduced screenplays in Hollywood.

Creative Artists Agency (CAA) is on a YouTube talent acquisition kick. Only a week after adding YouTube star Timothy DeLaGhetto, the Hollywood talent agency has signed digital celebrities Kian Lawley and Jc Caylen.

CAA will help develop both digital and traditional opportunities for Caylen and Lawley (the latter is already starring in the upcoming film The Chosen and has previously participated in Hollywood marketing stunts). These opportunities will encompass deals like film and television, endorsements, TV commercials, in-person appearances, publishing, and more.
