The 2025 Sundance slate is getting some more star power with two buzzy documentaries: Andrew Jarecki’s “The Alabama Solution” and Bao Nguyen’s “The Stringer.”
Both nonfiction features are the latest additions to the Premieres category lineup for the annual festival. With the two documentaries included, the festival totals 88 feature films to screen. Out of the lineup, 96 percent of features are world premieres.
“Adding these two nonfiction features to our robust slate of documentary offerings at the Festival, both told by filmmakers who have been a part of our Sundance community for many years, completes our programming with compelling explorations around justice and truth-telling,” Kim Yutani, Sundance Film Festival director of programming, said in a press statement.

The Sundance Film Festival has added two documentaries from directors Andrew Jarecki’s and Bao Nguyen to its 2025 documentary lineup.
Jarecki’s docu, titled “The Alabama Solution,” is about, per the film’s press release, “incarcerated men who defy the odds to expose a cover-up in one of America’s deadliest prison systems.”
“The Alabama Solution” is the fourth project that Jarecki has debuted at Sundance. Twenty-two years ago, in 2003, the director’s inaugural film, “Capturing the Friedmans,” had its world premiere in Park City. An investigatory docu that cast light and doubt on a family of alleged child molesters, “Capturing the Friedmans” was a critical hit that went on to garner an Oscar nomination. In 2004, Jarecki’s short film “Just a Clown” premiered at Sundance. That was followed by the 2015 debut of the director’s “The Jinx: The Life and Deaths of Robert Durst.” The HBO bombshell six-part docuseries,...

Earlier today, Eugene Jarecki’s anticipated documentary, The Six Billion Dollar Man, has been unexpectedly withdrawn from the 2025 Sundance Film Festival. The decision announced just over a month before the festival’s opening, stems from significant recent developments in Julian Assange’s story that the filmmaker insists must be incorporated to ensure the documentary’s completeness.
In a statement released on December 20, Jarecki expressed his deep regret while emphasizing the importance of presenting a finished film that accurately reflects the evolving narrative. “The truth is, significant recent and unexpected developments have emerged at the heart of the story which, if not incorporated in the version for Sundance, would not represent a finished film,” he explained. “Sundance has shaped my career and been a cornerstone of my journey—only something of this magnitude could make me withdraw.”
The Six Billion Dollar Man was set to premiere as a Special Screening at Sundance.

Julian Assange Doc Pulled From Sundance, Won’t Be Completed in Time Due to ‘Unexpected Developments’
“The Six Billion Dollar Man,” a new documentary from Eugene Jarecki about Julian Assange, will no longer premiere at the Sundance Film Festival in January as “recent and unexpected developments” have occurred that make it impossible for the movie to be completed on time. The Sundance-winning “House I Live In” filmmaker revealed on Friday that the film has been withdrawn so he can properly finish it before it premieres.
“The truth is, significant recent and unexpected developments have emerged at the heart of the story which, if not incorporated in the version for Sundance, would not represent a finished film. Sundance has shaped my career and been a cornerstone of my journey—only something of this magnitude could make me withdraw,” Jarecki explained in a statement.
The film was due to play as a special screening, not in competition, when the festival gets underway at the end of January.

A new documentary about WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange has withdrawn from January’s Sundance Film Festival.
Titled “The Six Billion Dollar Man,” director Eugene Jarecki was set to mark the film’s world premiere in Utah next month. The festival routinely screens high-impact nonfiction projects, including recent harrowing docs on Michael Jackson’s sexual assault accusers and the firestorm surrounding alleged sexual misconduct by Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanagh. It’s quite uncommon for films to be voluntarily withdrawn from festival lineups once they are announced.

It’s unclear what events led to the decision.

Mark Wahlberg was "really happy" to have signed up for 'Play Dirty'.The 53-year-old actor stars in the upcoming thriller film - which follows the revenge of a professional thief who is double-crossed and left for dead - that is directed by Shane Black and described the movie as being a mix between classic heist flick 'The Italian Job' and the 1995 thriller that starred Al Pacino. He told Collider: "For me, it's like ' The Italian Job' meets ' Heat'. It's got the action, it's got the high stakes, it's got the humor, it's got these great characters, the best Shane Black dialogue. I waited a long time to get a script like that. Any time we talked about, 'Okay, what's the kind of movie you wanna do as an actor if we're talking a big, giant commercial movie?' And ' Lethal Weapon' is always right there,...

This is going to stun anyone who grew up on 21st century superhero cinema (which kicked off in 2000 with Bryan Singer's "X-Men" and only now seems to be on the wane), but what if I told you that in the 1970s, there were television series dedicated to the Hulk, Wonder Woman, and Spider-Man, and they weren't the main small-screen pop cultural obsessions for sci-fi/fantasy fans? Not even close.
This is because every kid in America was crazy about "The Six Million Dollar Man."

The sci-fi action TV series The Six Million Dollar Man was so incredibly popular when it was running on ABC back in the 1970s, it’s shocking that the franchise hasn’t received a revival outside of a few TV movies that aired in the ’80s and ’90s. It’s not for a lack of trying – in fact, an update called The Six Billion Dollar Man has been making its way through development hell for almost thirty years at this point. Mark Wahlberg has been attached to star in the project since 2014… and during a recent interview with Collider, Wahlberg expressed hope that The Six Billion Dollar Man will finally be going into production soon.
Inspired by Martin Caidin’s 1972 novel Cyborg (which received three sequels), The Six Million Dollar Man had the following synopsis: After a severely injured test pilot is rebuilt with nuclear-powered bionic limbs and implants, he serves as an intelligence agent.

“I’m a dad now,” he explained.
“A lot of guys my age in the business would probably say, ‘Well, that character has grown kids or kids in their late teens, I don’t want to play that role.’ I’m embracing that,” he continued.
In fact, he said “I look forward to playing a grandfather soon.”
In his latest movie, Dan Morgan (Wahlberg) loves his quiet suburban life as a devoted husband, father of three and successful car salesman. But that’s only half the story. Mark Wahlberg is thinking about his future.
The veteran actor, producer and entrepreneur sat down with Cigar Aficionado to cover the publication’s September/October issue, in which he opens up to Marvin R. Shanken about his past, present and future business pursuits. Notably, the 52-year-old blockbuster star questions how much longer he can stand in front of cameras.
“Well, I’m certainly working harder now than ever. Certain businesses, you kind of build them, pass them on or you exit. Hopefully my kids, we’ll see what their interests are, but I don’t think that I’ll be acting that much longer at the pace I am now,” he explains, referencing his four children with wife Rhea Durham. “That’s for sure. From Dirk Diggler to a deacon, Mark Wahlberg has played it all.
The “Boogie Nights” star most recently transformed into a Catholic priest for the new film “Father Stu,” out April 13. Wahlberg also produced the film based on the true story of a boxer turned priest.
“The Fighter” star told Entertainment Tonight that “Father Stu” is a turning point in his career.
“I feel like this is starting a new chapter for me in that, now, doing things like this [with] real substance can help people,” Wahlberg said. “I definitely want to focus on making more. I wouldn’t say necessarily just faith-based content but things that will help people.”
He added, “Hopefully this movie will open a door for not only myself but for lots of other people in Hollywood to make more meaningful content.”
Wahlberg has called “Father Stu” a “dream role” that chose him to do “God’s good” work.

Exclusive: Deadline has learned that a reboot of Blake Edwards hit 1979 comedy 10 is happening at Warner Bros. with Legally Blonde‘s Karen McCullah and Kirsten “Kiwi” Smith writing. Sue Kroll, through Kroll & Co. Entertainment’s exclusive deal at the Burbank, CA studio, will produce alongside Jeff Nathanson. Julie Andrews and Ashok Amritraj will serve as executive producers.
The original movie, which starred Edwards’ wife Julie Andrews, Dudley Moore and Bo Derek, followed a Hollywood composer going through a mid-life crisis who becomes infatuated with a newly married woman. 10 was a huge box office hit back in the day making close to $75M at the domestic box office.

When Sue Kroll, whose executive producing credits include “A Star Is Born” and “Motherless Brooklyn,” stepped on to produce “Birds of Prey,” she understood the “big responsibility and expectation” that came with making a comic book movie based on a beloved female outlaw.
“We always wanted to make sure that we were making a movie that fans would love,” Kroll told TheWrap. “There is so much fan interaction with these big franchises, and they come with a big responsibility and expectation. Fans have expressed concerns over previous films in the universe, that they were too dark, and because we were representing characters that were unique — this was the first time we were seeing Huntress or Black Canary, they had never been in a movie — that came with responsibility. Making sure that everyone would be happy with what we put together but also creating balance that was broadly appealing for both men and women.

Sue Kroll is set to produce the New York Times Penguin bestseller City of Girls from Eat Pray Love author Elizabeth Gilbert under the Kroll & Co. Entertainment banner.
Warner Bros. Pictures acquired the film rights to the novel, which was published on June 4, on behalf of Kroll & Co. WGA-nominated Masters of Sex creator Michelle Ashford, who earned an Emmy nom for co-writing HBO’s The Pacific, will adapt the feature screenplay.
It’s Gilbert’s second book to be adapted for the big screen, after her memoir Eat Pray Love, which racked up $205M at the global box office in 2010. City of Girls is set against the backdrop of the New York City theater world of the 1940s, centering on a young woman’s exploration of love, sex, self-discovery and friendship.

The Uncharted movie adaptation has yet another director as Bumblebee's Travis Knight steps into the role.
Travis Knight has agreed to direct Sony's Uncharted movie adaptation.
Knight is perhaps best known as the director of the surprisingly good Transformers spin-off, Bumblebee, which was the first live-action film he directed. Before that, Knight primarily worked as an animator on such as Coraline, ParaNorman, and The Boxtrolls. He's also seemingly still set to direct The Six Billion Dollar Man: an adaptation of The Six Million Dollar Man which clearly accounts for inflation.
Tom Holland is reportedly still playing Nathan Drake in the upcoming Uncharted adaptation, which is now set to enter production sometime early next year. There's still no official word regarding how the film's script will tie-in to the Uncharted story presented in the video game series of the same name.

Mark Wahlberg’s Six Billion Dollar Man film project has landed a great new director! Warner Bros. has hired Bumblebee and Kubo and the Two Strings director Travis Knight to helm the project! I love what Knight has done with those two films, and it’ll be cool to see how he handles The Six Billion Dollar Man.
The Six Billion Dollar Man is based on the classic 1970s sci-fi TV series The Six Million Dollar Man, which tells the story of former astronaut named Colonel Steve Austin, who had superhuman strength due to bionic implants and was employed as a secret agent. The series and film are based on novel Cyborg, by Martin Caidin.
Knight will direct from a script written by Bill DuBuque (The Accountant). Peter Berg was originally supposed to direct the film, but he ended up dropping out of the project.

‘Bumblebee’ Director to Tackle ‘Six Billion Dollar Man’ Adaptation for WB, Mark Wahlberg (Exclusive)
Travis Knight has come on board to direct Warner Bros.’ film adaptation of the classic TV show “Six Billion Dollar Man” with Mark Wahlberg attached to star.
Sue Kroll, Bill Gerber and Steve Levinson are producing with Bill DuBuque penning the script.
“The Six Billion Dollar Man” is based on the sci-fi TV series “The Six Million Dollar Man,” which is about a former astronaut, Colonel Steve Austin, portrayed by Lee Majors. Majors’ character, employed as a secret agent, had superhuman strength due to bionic implants. The series ran for five seasons on ABC between 1973 and 1978, and was based on Martin Caidin’s novel “Cyborg.”
The studio bought the rights to the project in 2017 from the Weinstein Company after the studio collapsed and had been looking for a director after Damian Szifron moved on from the project.
Knight is coming off the “Transformers” spinoff “Bumblebee,” which grossed $466 million at the worldwide box office,...

The hero of Leigh Whannell’s exhilarating and visceral film is quadriplegic by day but a software-powered avenger by night
The latest sneak attack from genre kings Blumhouse is an unusually patient, detailed and visceral cyber-thriller that plays like a Black Mirror rethink of The Six Billion Dollar Man, and may be the closest any mainstream production is likely to get to Japan’s cult Tetsuo movies. Left embittered after a carjacking that kills his beloved and puts him in a wheelchair, petrolhead Grey (Logan Marshall-Green) enters into a confidential pact with a reclusive, ominously peroxided tech genius, becoming the guinea pig for what’s dubbed “biomechanical fusion”: a microchipping operation that reboots his broken body with a Hal-like operating system and heightened physical capabilities. Does it endow Grey with renewed peace? Big nope.
