This film is based on the Latoya Ammons family possession.
The real Ammon's home in Gary, Indiana was purchased by Ghost Adventures host Zak Bagans in 2014 for $35000. He demolished it 2 years later, telling the Indy Star, "There was something there that was very dark, yet highly intelligent and powerful.".
At the 1:04:00 mark, a young girl is seen in the doorway of her parent's bedroom wearing a t-shirt that says, "Antoine and Blane: Hated it!". This is a reference to the 90's sketch comedy show, "In Living Color", where stereotypical flamboyantly gay characters Antoine (Damon Wayans) and Blaine (David Alan Grier) would rate various movies. "Hated it" would be the rating they gave to movies and shows they didn't like.
The cast includes one Oscar Winner: Mo'Nique; and three Oscar Nominees: Glenn Close, Andra Day, and Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor.
