Last week, the news broke that Marvel Studios has shelved TV shows revolving around Nova, Strange Academy, and Terror, Inc. The biggest shocker was Richard Rider's long-awaited MCU debut being put on "pause," especially as we were hearing some exciting things about the show.

The change likely comes as a result of Marvel Television moving away from series that set the stage for movies. The final numbers are in for Captain America: Brave New World's opening weekend over the four-day Presidents' Day holiday and, as expected, the latest Marvel Studios movie debuted with a mighty $100 million in North America.

While current estimates point to a four-day $192.4 million global bow, its three-day total was $180.9 million. That's right where the majority of analysts predicted it would land, meaning the movie neither exceeded nor fell below expectations.

Captain America: Brave New World has been named the #1 movie in the world (the MPA views it as such because it had a wide release) but didn't actually make the most money. In China, Ne Zha 2 earned a massive $279.6 million to bring its worldwide total to over $1.6 billion. So, technically, it opened at #2.

Captain America: Brave New World is now playing in theaters and, while critics are divided on the latest MCU movie, it does appear to be receiving a far warmer response from fans and regular moviegoers.

Let's cut to the chase: "Captain America: Brave New World" is bad. The story is paper-thin, the action is repetitive and too reminiscent of previous "Captain America" movies, and the villain's plot is uninspired. The worst sin this movie commits is being safe and forgettable, having nothing to say despite plenty of opportunities to be topical.

There is, however, one aspect of the film that's good: Harrison Ford's President Thaddeus Ross. Captain America: Brave New World’s opening weekend verdict at the box office is out, and it has passed. The film exceeded the industry’s projections, scoring more than the predicted range. The film, which features Anthony Mackie in the titular role, received mixed reviews from critics. Its CinemaScore rating is also worse than some of the other MCU movies, as it has gotten a B-. It was made on a reported budget of $180 million. On the other hand, Fifty Shades of Grey was the first film in the erotic franchise starring Dakota Johnson and Jamie Dornan. It was released in 2015 and directed by Sam Taylor-Johnson.

It goes without saying that Bucky Barnes is one of the Marvel Cinematic Universe's most popular characters. Played by Sebastian Stan, Sergeant James Buchanan Barnes made his on-screen debut in 2011's Captain America: The First Avenger and fans instantly fell in love with Steve Rogers' loyal, funny, and handsome (very handsome) best friend. When he returned from the dead in 2014 sequel The Winter Soldier (as the titular antagonist), he instantly became an MCU legend. There was no going back after that.

Although Bucky is widely recognized as the former Winter Soldier, the fact that his time with the franchise began in 2011's The First Avenger makes Stan one of the longest-standing actors in the Marvel Studios franchise. There are clearly no plans on that changing in the foreseeable future, as the character is set to return in this year's Thunderbolts*.

That clearly is the intention, for the film doesn't feature the typical triumphant Marvel Studios opening fanfare. There is a "Marvel" and a "Studios" that flash up on the screen, along with the words Brave New World in a very uninteresting font. What's missing is the name of the title character.

The 35th Marvel Cinematic Universe movie masquerades as a political thriller and, for the most part, it's a convincing performance. The film doesn't feature a triumphant score (except maybe when its most necessary in the final act of the movie) and it doesn't rely on any of the McU's more light-hearted characters. What we have here is a serious movie complete with a compelling central conspiracy plot involving the President of the United States, who is now Thaddeus "Thunderbolt" Ross (now played by Harrison Ford).

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is in trouble. The past couple of years have seen a string of commercial and critical failures that have put the future of this cinematic experiment in peril. Worse yet, it seems every new Marvel project is met with apathy and disinterest. With the Multiverse Saga heading toward its conclusion, every movie counts, and sadly, "Captain America: Brave New World" is not the clear-cut solution to Marvel's problems. This is a safe, forgettable, entirely unpolitical movie with nothing to say and little to offer that "The Falcon and the Winter Soldier" didn't already cover. As with every MCU movie, rumours swirled about Captain America: Brave New World leading up to its release. As time passed, those were primarily focused on the movie's reshoots, though The Hulk and She-Hulk are just two of the characters who have been rumoured to appear at one time or another.

We've already told you that Amadeus Cho's scenes were scrapped and beyond Harrison Ford's Red Hulk, no additional Hulks make an appearance in the course of Sam Wilson's first solo adventure.

Liv Tyler shows up for one scene as Betty Ross (she was first spotted on set shooting a funeral scene which isn't in the movie) and, beyond her, there's only one major cameo: Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes.

Perhaps this was to be expected after The Falcon and The Winter Soldier but he and Sam reunite shortly after the battle over Celestial Island leaves Joaquín Torres badly injured.

Captain America: Brave New World not only serves as a follow-up to Avengers: Endgame and The Falcon and The Winter Soldier but also addresses unresolved plot beats from Eternals and The Incredible Hulk.

It's a unique use of the movie that, for the most part, serves it well. However, this is Marvel Studios and the MCU is a franchise that always has one eye on the future.

Review: Things sure have changed in two years. Think about it – on President’s Day weekend back in 2023, Ant-Man & the Wasp: Quantumania hit theaters, and its $106 million opening was considered a massive underperformance, with many even calling the film a flop. That’s how hot Marvel was then – a $100 million plus opening was considered weak. However, the bar was lowered – A Lot – by The Marvels, while several big-budget Disney Plus series further weakened the brand, and now, Captain America: Brave New World seems to be opening with perhaps the least fanfare ever...

Marvel has not always been successful when its supporting characters have stepped up to lead roles: even in The Falcon And The Winter Soldier, Anthony Mackie and Sebastian Stan’s charisma and chemistry were hamstrung by a messy script and shifting priorities. The good news is that, in his first official outing as Captain America, Mackie has a far stronger and more focused story to work with.

There, a genuinely shocking attempt on the President’s life leaves Bradley back in prison and Wilson desperate to save his name.

Captain America: Brave New World is a sequel to Avengers: Endgame, The Falcon and The Winter Soldier, The Incredible Hulk, and even, to a much lesser extent, Eternals. For fans who have complained about a lack of connectivity in the Multiverse Saga, there's plenty of that to be found here...for better or worse. Serving so many previous stories robs the movie of a clear identity, and the messiness of it all often overshadows an otherwise action-packed, exciting first solo adventure for the McU's new Captain America, Sam Wilson. 

The story? It's what you've seen in the trailers. After President Ross is attacked, Sam must investigate a conspiracy that could result in another world war. There are some interesting moments along the way - despite The Leader being sorely underutilized, his dynamic with Ross is by far the most compelling subplot - but it's a relatively straightforward political thriller which...

Marvel Cinematic Universe’s latest installment, Captain America: Brave New World, featuring Anthony Mackie as Sam Wilson and the legendary Harison Ford as Red Hulk, has faced a barrage of polarized reviews. At the same time, critics have acknowledged Wilson and Ford’s performances as the high-point of the movie, as well as its screenplay and direction drawing questions.

The superhero cum conspiracy theory film’s review embargo was lifted after long-standing speculation on Wednesday, thanks to early releases in several overseas markets. However, critics there were far from kind. The movie currently holds a 51% “rotten” rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with an average score of 5.6/10, after more than 130 reviews were in.

The full review embargo for Marvel Studios' latest Multiverse Saga adventure, Captain America: Brave New World, lifted earlier today, and the first wave of verdicts were not especially positive.

Though some were won over by Anthony Mackie's (Sam Wilson) big-screen debut under the Captain America mantle, the movie came in for quite a bit of criticism from the majority of press (and influencers) who managed to catch an early screening.

Brave New World hit Rotten Tomatoes with 47%, and while the score has risen slightly since more reviews were added, it's not by very much.

Based on 101 reviews, the latest MCU film currently sits at 52%.

If the score stays below 60%, Captain America: Brave New World will become just the third Marvel Studios movie to be hit with the dreaded green splat on the review aggregator, after Eternals (47%) and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania (46%).

The social media reactions for Marvel Studios' Captain America: Brave New World were decidedly mixed, which did not bode well for the full reviews being particularly glowing.

Initial reactions always tend to be more positive overall, and sure enough, the majority of critics have expressed their disappointment with Sam Wilson's first big-screen outing as the Sentinel of Liberty.

Though the movie doesn't sound like a complete disaster by any means, quite a few of the reviews share the same criticisms: A convoluted, messy plot; some choppy action sequences; an underwhelming villain, and a reliance on well-worn story structure with few surprises.
