Over the past few years, a number of actors have expressed their regrets about working with Woody Allen, including Greta Gerwig, Kate Winslet, and Timothée Chalamet. But for those actors who still want to appear in the 88-year-old director’s films? Mia Farrow totally gets it.
“I completely understand if an actor decides to work with him,” Farrow told CBS Sunday Morning. “I’m not one who’d say, ‘Oh, they shouldn’t.’” Farrow, who collaborated with Allen on 13 movies over the course of decades, also says she can separate her experiences on those films from the family turmoil that came afterward. “Oh yeah, yeah.”
Farrow’s latest comments are surprising given the former couple’s history. Farrow and Allen adopted two children together, Dylan and Moses. In the early 1990s, Farrow accused Allen of molesting Dylan. However, the Child Sexual Abuse Clinic of Yale-New Haven Hospital and the New...

Last week, The Hollywood Reporter reported that cinephiles were sharing “samizdat” links to Woody Allen’s latest film Coup de Chance from a French-to-Dutch-to-English translation, and New Yorkers were attending clandestine screenings at an East Village bar/event space. Today, THR can exclusively report that those who wish to see the 88-year-old’s latest project, which debuted at the Venice Film Festival in early September to (mostly) positive reviews, can do so without slinking around or needing secret codes.
MPI Media Group will release the picture, Allen’s 50th theatrically released feature film as a director, for North American markets on April 5, 2024. A digital/VOD release will follow on April 12.
The movie, shot in France in French, stars Lou de Laâge (Respire, The Mad Woman’s Ball) as a self-aware trophy wife who reconnects with an old chum from the Lycée Français in New York, played by Niels Schneider (Heartbeats,...

As both a tentpole and an artifact, the new James Bond movie now belongs to the increasingly voracious Jeff Bezos. Most of it, anyway.
In acquiring MGM for $8.45 billion, Amazon can claim proprietorship of No Time to Die, which opens October 8, but some insiders argue it’s a mixed blessing. A $300 million theatrical release, the latest Bond represents a tangle of rights agreements dating back 60 years that reflect the legalistic compromises of the past rather than the slick streamer dealmaking of the present. Sequel prospects also lack a pre-geriatric star. Some ticket buyers may also see its plot as a creaky reminder of white-bread misogyny.
Nonetheless, the Bond franchise has accounted for many hundreds of millions of dollars in box office muscle, and Bezos, as the world’s richest man, covets muscle. Amazon’s meek presence in Hollywood has always annoyed its boss, as Brad Stone...

Woody Allen’s multimillion-dollar lawsuit against Amazon isn’t dead, but it is definitely wounded.
In a dense ruling released Wednesday on a motion by the Jeff Bezos-founded streamer to toss Allen’s February 7-filed complaint, a federal judge in New York firmly sliced off a good portion of the Oscar winner’s claims. “Amazon’s April 3, 2019 partial motion to dismiss is granted,” U.S. District Court Judge Denise Cote wrote in a ruling (read it here). “The plaintiffs’ fifth, sixth, seventh, and eighth causes of action are dismissed, including the sole claim against Amazon Studios.”
All of which means Allen has essentially lost the ability to go after the Jennifer Salke-run studio over the Roy Price-instigated Multipicture Acquisition Agreement inked with his production company Gravier.
Already back behind the camera on his new Rivkin’s Festival film, the Manhattan filmmaker can still pursue the action on...

When Miley Cyrus stepped on the South African set of Black Mirror, there to film a just-released episode of the Netflix anthology's fifth season, it was supposed to be the start of a new chapter. Filming the episode, entitled "Rachel, Jack and Ashley Too," marked a return to the medium that made her a star—television—for the first time since 2016's ill-fated Woody Allen-Amazon series Crisis in Six Scenes. The role of pop star Ashley O. was an opportunity for the onetime Disney Channel queen to comment on the story of females in the music industry—her story, really—in a piece that was written almost expressly for her. Little did she know that some 10,000 miles away, on the...

Woody Allen is lining up a new film project in Spain with his Vicky Cristina Barcelona and Midnight In Paris producer Mediapro.
Details have not been released on the nature of the project but Spanish paper El Pais, citing sources at Mediapro, reports that scouting has been taking place in the Basque city of San Sebastián.
News of the project comes two weeks after Allen launched legal action against Amazon claiming the online titan broke a lucrative four-film deal it had signed with the filmmaker in 2017. Woody Allen has filed a $68 million suit against Amazon Studios. The director alleges the company has backed out of a multi-picture film deal because of the allegations of sexual misconduct against him. Allen’s adopted daughter Dylan Farrow has long accused Allen of molesting her when she was a child. Allen called the claims “a 25-year old, baseless allegation” in his lawsuit against Amazon.
In addition to backing out of the deal, Allen also alleges Amazon is refusing to release “A Rainy Day in New York.” The movie, starring Selena Gomez, Elle Fanning, and Timothée Chalamet, has been finished for over six months. According to Allen, Amazon has not given him any specific reasons why the film has not been released. IndieWire has reached out to Amazon Studios for further comment. The lawsuit was filed in the Southern District of New York.
Allen originally signed a five-picture deal with Amazon Studios.

Woody Allen says Amazon has no right to terminate a deal for the production and distribution of films.
In 2014, Amazon was looking to make a big move into original content and entered into a deal with the filmmaker for a series titled Crisis in Six Scenes. Then came a series of more agreements for four movies. These were rich pacts that, according to new court documents, guaranteed Allen's company Gravier Productions minimum guaranteed payments totaling between $68 million and $73 million.

When I first saw that the Coen brothers had a new Western in the works, my ears perked up like a cowboy’s at the sound of a dinner bell. Something nourishing was on the grill and it was called “The Ballad of Buster Scruggs.”
It wasn’t because Joel and Ethan Coen are great balladeers of the Old West. They’d only written one previous Western, “True Grit.” But they have put their unique voice as writers to good use across a range of genres from black comedy (“Fargo”) to crime drama (their Oscar-winning “No Country for Old Men”), to period comedy, to wry romance (“Intolerable Cruelty”).
For people who appreciate the art form that is the screenplay, a coming Coen brothers movie is like the next book from a favorite author.

Miley Cyrus might be in big trouble with Netflix. Stern then revealed Cyrus confirmed her “Black Mirror’ role, although the actress added she wasn’t allowed to mention “Black Mirror” by name because she’s not allowed to speak about it further.
The rumor was first introduced last month by the South African news website Iol. They’re back: Matthew Weiner’s laundry lists of forbidden plot points. In the days of “Mad Men,” screeners for each new season, half-season, or episode came with a laundry list of spoilers critics could not include under penalty of death, and similar letters have become so prevalent they’re now parodied by other creators. With “The Romanoffs,” those special requests have resumed. However, this review of “The Romanoffs” is relatively brief for reasons that have nothing to do with censorship: The first two episodes of Weiner’s Amazon Prime series are a serious disappointment. There’s not enough to spoil beyond the show’s many, many missteps.

Woody Allen finished production on “A Rainy Day In New York” in October 2017, but now it appears the movie won’t be released in 2018 or maybe ever. Sources tell Page Six exclusively “Rainy Day” has been shelved indefinitely by Amazon Studios, which produced the movie on a reported $25 million budget. The title follows Allen’s previous Amazon efforts “Café Society,” “Crisis in Six Scenes,” and “Wonder Wheel.”
Despite the fact that “Rainy Day” is already shot, Amazon faces a tough challenge releasing a movie directed by Allen in the #MeToo era. The director’s name has been in countless headlines over the last year as his adopted daughter, Dylan Farrow, brought old allegations accusing Allen of child molestation back into the spotlight. Amazon bombed with its December 2017 release of “Wonder Wheel,” starting with the film’s Nyff red carpet premiere being cancelled in the wake of the #MeToo movement.

After taking two years off presenting at the TCA press tour, both Amazon and Netflix returned over the weekend. And both staked memorably forceful claims on their respective roles within the streaming universe.
For Amazon, that meant shifting the conversation away from both the niche programming and the boys-club mentality of the now-concluded Roy Price era, with new Amazon Studios head Jennifer Salke taking the stage for her first time representing the streamer. For Netflix, as is so often the case, it was a volume game, with a full day of programming showing off all the sides of Netflix’s diffuse identity.
Head of original programming Cindy Holland made the case Sunday that Netflix doesn’t actually have an identity at all, referring instead to the demographic-agnostic “taste communities” to which Netflix caters, which is reflected in the breadth of its programming from dark drama “Ozark” to upcoming Matt Groening...

The actress took to her Twitter to send a message of support to the actor and director, who often used Keaton as his muse through their decades of working together, including most famously on Annie Hall.

The actress also linked to the interview in the tweet. Allen has been repeatedly accused of child molestation by his daughter Dylan Farrow.

As actors and film distributors distance themselves from Woody Allen amid reignited allegations that he molested his daughter Dylan Farrow, the director’s sister is standing by his side.
Letty Aronson, Allen’s longtime producing partner and younger sibling, claimed Farrow had “capitalized” on the #MeToo movement in an article published by The New York Times on Sunday.
“I do feel that it’s an escalation,” Aronson told the newspaper, adding that the campaign has been used for “ulterior motives.”

On a sunny late August day in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, extras on Amy Sherman-Palladino and Daniel Palladino’s Amazon series, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, are dressed in tweed and wool winter suits, overcoats and dresses, suitable for going holiday shopping in late ‘50s Midtown Manhattan.
It’s the next-to-last day of shooting on the series about a housewife who turns to standup comedy following an unexpected upheaval in her home life. The show has leased out an old bank and transformed it into the opulent cosmetics section of the B. Altman department store from that era. A downpour scuttled an outdoor scene from the night before, so there's a lot of scrambling to get the schedule back on track. But since the business of New York can't be disrupted, the extras mingle with the diners at the pizzeria next door, making for an odd mix of Manhattan's elegant past and Brooklyn's gentrified present.

Days after he was suspended indefinitely, Amazon Studios head Roy Price has resigned from the streaming company he’d started.
This marks the end of a chapter for Amazon and swift fall from grace for Price, who’d come up with the business plan for an Amazon entertainment division, launched the unit and ran it from Day 1.
The resignation was fully expected. As we reported last week, it was considered virtually impossible for Price to be accepted as an Amazon chief going forward following the details of sexual harassment allegations against him made public last Thursday.
“He would be completely ostracized,” one person said on Friday, noting that it would be hard for the studio to attract female showrunners and actors in the current post-Harvey Weinstein environment where there is very little tolerance for sexual harassment.

Kate Winslet is a bored waitress having an affair in the latest from the overly prolific writer-director that boasts stunning visuals but a clunker of a script
It’s that time of year again: time for Woody Allen’s ever decreasing fanbase to ignore their well-reasoned intuition and wish for the best from the overly prolific writer-director’s annual starry offering. At this stage of his career, coming off the back of the perfectly acceptable Café Society and the in-no-way-whatsoever-watchable Crisis in Six Scenes, expectations are low, the shining pleasures of 2013’s Blue Jasmine fading faster by the day. Wisely deciding against the boo-loving audience at Cannes, he’s chosen to debut his latest, Wonder Wheel, on the closing night of the New York film festival.

Every week, IndieWire asks a select handful of TV critics two questions and publishes the results on Tuesday. (The answer to the second, “What is the best show currently on TV?” can be found at the end of this post.)
This week’s question: What is the worst show you’ve ever reviewed? Why was it so bad? Did you waver over the grade or rating you gave it?
Daniel Fienberg (@TheFienPrint), The Hollywood Reporter
I’ve compared “Mixology” to contracting TV herpes, “Fuller House” to exhuming a bloating, gaseous corpse and called “Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders” the perfect xenophobic TV show for Trump’s America. Still, there’s little doubt that no show has ever made me so irate for its mere misguided existence than a little show called “H8r” on The CW. Timothée Chalamet, Elle Fanning and Selena Gomez will bring new blood to Woody Allen’s untitled next film.
Woody Allen has cast Timothée Chalamet, Elle Fanning, and Selena Gomez in his next feature film. As is usually the case with Allen's projects, the new movie is thus far unnamed.
His latest project will be distributed in cinemas by Amazon’s television and motion picture production arm. This will be the third project Allen directs for Amazon Studios, which produced Cafe Society and the upcoming Wonder Wheel. Amazon also produced Allen’s television directorial debut, Crisis In Six Scenes.
Chalamet is intriguing casting, already starring in Call My By Your Name, which hits cinemas in the Us this autumn, and is already generating Academy Awards talk. Fanning starred in Nicolas Wind Refn’s conspiracy of fame hallucination The Neon Demon, and had a key featured part in Sofia Coppola’s The Beguiled.

Update: Move signals broader transition likely to take effect in 2018.
In its first and long-awaited foray into self-distribution, Amazon Studios has set a December 1 release for Woody Allen’s New York Film Festival closing night drama Wonder Wheel.
The move is a precursor for Amazon Studios’ broader plan to self-distribute full-time, which has been the subject of speculation for many months and Screen understands will occur in 2018.
Up until now the company has partnered on the theatrical component of its releases with established distributors like Roadside Attractions, Lionsgate, and Magnolia Pictures.
Amazon Studios has been quietly building up its distribution team and sources said while the initial focus will remain on arthouse films, the infrastructure could grow to accommodate wider releases.
Bob Berney serves as head of movies marketing and distribution and his credits include breakout successes like The Passion Of The Christ, My Big Fat Greek Wedding and Pan’s Labyrinth.

Woody Allen is keeping his one-movie-every-year policy alive. Variety reports that Amazon Studios will open the filmmaker’s new movie, “Wonder Wheel,” on December 1 in select theaters.

Miley Cyrus has admitted she has major regrets about swinging naked on a wrecking ball in the video for her song of the same name, adding that she’d like to kill the catchy track.
The pop star, 24, famously stripped nude for the infamously steamy video during her headline-grabbing break on to the music scene as a solo act in 2013.
Now Miley, who’s engaged to Aussie actor Liam Hemsworth, has admitted the video will follow her “forever” no matter what she does, and that she wishes it would die.
She said: “That’s something you can’t take away … swinging around naked on a wrecking ball lives forever. Once you do that in the mess that I did, it’s forever.”

An onslaught of onscreen and offscreen talent unite with a clear sense of purpose in the limited series “When We Rise.” An examination of gay and women’s rights over three decades and how their causes conflict and coalesce, Dustin Lance Black’s new ABC offering emphasizes what’s possible when oppressed minorities come together and fight back against a malicious patriarchy.
There’s no shortage of modern parallels at play, and ABC is counting on the public’s revived passion for protest to drive interest in a show that honors those who paved the way with picket signs and (mostly) passive resistance. The eight-episode series written by Black (mostly) does right by its honorable cause, but it suffers from the strictures of its format. A sprawling story creates an awkward combination of history lessons and personal stories, and broadcast standards prove far too restrictive. The result is a conglomeration...

Even at 81 years young, Woody Allen’s work rate continues to be the stuff of legend. For generations, the prolific filmmaker has operated at a remarkably brisk clip, churning out one quirky feature after another, and culminating with the release of last year’s somewhat forgettable romantic dramedy Café Society.
But a mixed reception has never stopped Allen before and sure enough, the director is behind the lens once again for Wonder Wheel, a 1950s-set period drama in which Justin Timberlake takes point as a lifeguard. Seen above alongside Juno Temple and the Oscar-winning Kate Winslet, Timberlake’s character will reportedly have some sort of romantic dalliance with Winslet’s, while Tony Sirico’s mysterious character is the one threatening to throw a spanner in the works.

As the year comes to a close, there is one group we’ve yet to hear from about the Best of 2016: The Directors.
Filmmakers are busy folks, and some were instantly wary about making a list, with “I haven’t seen enough movies to make a top ten list” a common reply. So we decided to keep it loose. Including TV and other forms of entertainment was encouraged, how they chose to frame their list was totally flexible, and even if they only had a handful of projects they wanted to highlight, IndieWire made it clear we wanted to know what inspired them this year.
The most exciting thing, beyond how many great directors replied, is the time and energy they put into their lists. Be it Kirsten Johnson’s tribute to Abbas Kiarostami, Paul Feig’s surprise message to “Ghostbuster” trolls, Jennifer Kent teasing the start of her new film,...
