In the world of European genre cinema the big awards that recognize the best of the region are the Méliès, awarded by the European Fantastic Film Festivals Federation. More of a prestige award for the moment, winning any of the Méliès each year brings clout to the filmmaker and draws the attention of producers and financiers looking to back up exciting filmmakers and their projects in the years to come. Perusing the list I myself would have a lot of catching up to do, seeing less than half of the eleven titles that make up this year's d'argent list. I could speak to the quality of films like Hagazussa, The Lodgers, November and Tiere. If the others are anywhere close to the quality of...

MaryAnn’s quick take… Cursed twins who speak in faux-byronic enigmas, a crumbling manse full of dead birds and velvet drapes, and strained psychosexual nonsense. There’s nothing eerie here, just the puerile and misjudged. I’m “biast” (pro): nothing

Gothic romance, tortured siblings and a needlessly huge-’n’-haunted manor house hidden right out in the sticks; you can bet your lucky stars it’s another period-set Irish horror. And although Brian O’Malley’s sumptuously shot The Lodgers compounds plenty of the old-school genre nuts-and-bolts, with some slick effects work and solid performances, it’s far from the sort of spirit-stalking shake-up a lot of the horror crowd might well be hoping for.
Finding some sort of new ground in the Anglo-Irish conflicts of early 1920s Ireland, there’s a decent-enough central dynamic in a pair of outcast twins; orphans hidden away in a grubby old mansion off the beaten track, governed by a couple of omni-present, omni-pissed-off local ghosts. And when Charlotte Vega’s Rachel finally starts to rebel, hanging out with a local soldier and giving the finger to white-sheet mum-and-dad, the necessary...

We've got an eerie new trailer for you to check out for a wickedly creepy gothic haunted house horror thriller called The Lodgers. The story is set in the 1920s and centers on twins who live together in an old gothic haunted mansion filled with dark and malevolent spirits that terrorize them.
I love watching horror movies like this, and I really like what I'm seeing in this trailer. The movie has a similar tone to films like The Others, Crimson Peak, and The Woman in Black, all of which I liked. Here's the synopsis:
A gothic ghost story about orphaned twins Edward and Rachel who share a crumbling manor in 1920s rural Ireland. But they are not alone. They share the house with unseen entities who control them with three absolute rules. As separate fates draw them apart, the twins must face the terrible truth about their family’s ghostly tormentors.

"Every sound the house makes, I hear them..." Epic Pictures has unveiled a new official trailer for the Irish gothic horror film called The Lodgers, following up the first trailer that debuted last year when this film was premiering at film festivals in the fall. Set in 1920s, the story is about twins Rachel and Edward who share a strange existence in their crumbling family estate. Each night, the property becomes the domain of a sinister presence ("The Lodgers") who enforces three rules upon the twins: they must be in bed by midnight; they may not permit an outsider past the threshold; if one attempts to escape, the life of the other is placed in jeopardy. Sounds pretty creepy. Starring Charlotte Vega, Bill Milner, David Bradley, and Eugene Simon. This looks like a solid thriller and it got some good reviews at the festivals. Might be worth a watch. I liked enough of 2014’s Let Us Prey, the debut feature from Irish filmmaker Bryan O’Malley, to want to see whatever he would do next. In addition to conjuring up some truly nightmarish imagery, O’Malley displayed an incredible talent for stylized visuals and slow-burn pacing. His follow-up film, this year’s The Lodgers, is a totally different kind of horror movie, but one which again showcases many of O’Malley’s same gifts as a visual storyteller.
This gothic ghost story, set in early 20th century Ireland, follows a pair of orphaned twin siblings, Rachel and Edward (Charlotte Vega and Bill Milner), who are more or less prisoners of the mansion they inherited and now inhabit alone. Smt Heads, you know there’s been a time when you wanted people to drop dead. But, given the mayhem in Epic Pictures’ upcoming Sci-Fi horror fest, “Radius,” maybe you’d need to make sure there was an off switch! Check out the Trailer right now (and don’t skip the pre-trailer for “Flint” while you’re at it):
Liam (Diego Klattenhoff) wakes from a car crash at the bottom of a deep ditch with no memory of who he is. As he makes his way into town, he discovers that anyone who comes within a 50-foot radius of him dies instantly. Out of options, he tries to live in seclusion to protect others, until the day a woman comes up to him and doesn’t die in his presence. With her arrival, Liam’s murderous power now seems to have subsided. The woman, Jane (Charlotte Sullivan), is also amnesiac and looking for answers.
