StudioCanal is teaming up with French production outfit WTFilms on a slate of European genre films.

The agreement will see StudioCanal and WTFilms collaborate in the development, production and distribution of action, thriller, science fiction and horror movie over a period of at least two years.

StudioCanal will act as a co-producer and distributor for WTFilms projects selected during that time.

The new collobration sprang from StudioCanal’s successful partnership with WTFilms on Xavier Gens’ action thriller Mayhem!, which was a fantasy festivals hit last year and was picked up by IFC Films for the U.S.

It’s an interesting month on HBO and Max this March, as two acclaimed films hit the streamer along with some intriguing original programming.

First up in the movies arena is the streaming debut of Wonka, starring Timothée Chalamet. From beloved Paddington director Paul King, the film follows the adventures of a young Willy Wonka as he looks to become the world’s best (and weirdest) chocolatier. Judy Greer’s iconic career has spanned from “13 Going on 30” to the revamped “Halloween” franchise, proving the actress can delicately balance comedy, horror, and even a certain flavor of signature detachment onscreen. Yet, somehow, the time travel logic of 2004’s comedy “13 Going on 30” makes more sense than the kind at hand in “Aporia,” the latest Greer vehicle that attempts to marry scraps from Greer’s recent haunting performance as a grieving mother in recent festival premiere “Eric Larue” and repurposes her masterful tears into a bland sci-fi drama that asks too many unanswered questions about morality, mortality, and the price of happiness.

Greer stars in the film as Sophie, a widowed single mother who lost her scientist husband Malcolm (Edi Gathegi) in a drunk driving accident. She is left to care for their 11-year-old daughter Riley (“This Is Us” alum Faithe Herman), with the pre-teen acting...

Normally at the top of these Don’t-Miss Indies round-ups, we like to make a little joke that’s somewhat topical. But if you’ve been paying attention to what’s been going on in Hollywood for the past couple of months, you’ll know that the ongoing WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes are no laughing matter (unless we’re talking about the writers’ signs.) In fact, right at press time not one but two of this months featured titles have been pushed, due to strike-related issues.

Forget Westerns: “The Ballad of Lefty Brown” director Jared Moshé is going on a whole different journey.

In “Aporia,” which world premieres at Fantasia, Sophie (Judy Greer) is trying to keep things together after her Mal husband is killed in a drunk-driving accident. Struggling to comfort teenage daughter, she makes a shocking discovery: his friend, a former physicist, has managed to build a mysterious machine.

Netflix has confirmed that 38 new original series, movies and specials will be debuting on the streaming service in February. Leading off the lineup is the first season of the fantasy horror series “Locke & Key,” which is inspired by the comic series crafted by Stephen King’s son, Joe Hill. Among other shows launching their first seasons in the shortest month of the year are “Gentefied” and “Unstoppable.”

Also on tap is the sophomore editions of the sci-fi series “Altered Carbon” and the crime drama “Narcos: Mexico.” And look for the long-awaited sequel “To All the Boys: P.S. I Still Love You,” which continues the story from the teen romantic comedy that was one of the most streamed films of 2018.

There’s no better way to start the romantic month than to binge watch all your favorite romantic films and series coming to Netflix this February. We asked Jared Moshe, who directed Peter Fonda in the 2017 A24 Western “The Ballad of Lefty Brown,” to share his memories of working with the late actor.

It was our first day of shooting on “The Ballad of Lefty Brown.” The sun had just dipped behind the mountains. As darkness descended, we raced to get our final shot. Despite the rush, the crew was buzzing with excitement. I wish I could say it was because of stunning image or a powerful moment of performance. No. Word had spread that Peter Fonda had landed in Montana.

I can’t think of another actor who occupies such a unique space in the history of cinema. On the one hand, Peter is a counterculture icon. Half of “Easy Rider.” The star of “The Wild Angels.” “The Trip.” On the other hand, he’s Hollywood royalty. Son of Henry. Brother of Jane. Father of Bridget.

At 79 years old, inimitable Hollywood icon Peter Fonda passed away this week, leaving behind a legacy of iconic work. He is survived by his older sister, actress Jane Fonda, and his daughter, actress Bridget Fonda. In tribute to his career, here are five Fonda performances to seek out:

“The Wild Angels” (1966)

Cult hero Roger Corman’s 1966 biker outlaw film put Peter Fonda on the map as one of the faces of the New Hollywood, and forever memorialized the actor as a Harley-Davidson icon. The film that Leonard Maltin once called “Ok after 24 beers” stars Fonda as Heavenly Blues, the leader of a hard-partying San Pedro motorcycle gang, opposite Bruce Dern, Nancy Sinatra, and Diane Ladd. Fonda went on to co-star with Dern in Corman’s 1967 psychedelic film “The Trip.”

“Easy Rider” (1969)

Dennis Hopper’s wild road movie arrived in Hollywood like a brick through a windshield, shattering conventions and inspiring generations of filmmakers to come.

Los Angeles – Peter Fonda, part of Hollywood acting royalty, had many memorable roles in his long career. But he will forever be known as the “Easy Rider,” the 1969 feature that ushered in a new wave of filmmaking. Portraying a biker named Captain America, his character was “born to be wild” as he motored across the country. Peter Fonda died in Los Angeles due to complications of lung cancer. He was 79.

Debuting director-writer Bassam Jarbawi has a great theme with “Screwdriver” and a slick filmmaking style, though at times the surface gets more attention than what’s underneath. Set in the semipermanent Al-Amari Refugee Camp on the Ramallah outskirts, the film tackles the difficulties a man faces in returning to normal life after 15 years in an Israeli prison, exploring the physical and emotional toll that trauma and lost time extract from his damaged psyche. Side characters are unevenly drawn but the more complex lead role, nicely played by Ziad Bakri (“Personal Affairs”), gives it a genuine, affecting core. “Screwdriver” is likely to get a fair amount of rotation on the festival circuit.

Written by Wirth, who also serves as showrunner, Wu Assassins, set in San Francisco’s Chinatown, is a martial arts crime series with supernatural elements. It stars Uwais as Kai Jin, who becomes the latest and last Wu Assassin, chosen to round up the powers of an ancient triad and restore balance once again. Mann plays Uncle Six.

The Golden Globe-winning comedy series “Mozart in the Jungle” returns to Amazon for season 4 beginning on Feb. 16. Gael Garcia Bernal plays Rodrigo, the roguish conductor of the New York Symphony. In season 3, he and his troupe travelled to Venice, Italy to stage a new opera, “La Fiamma.” He clashed with Malena (Monica Bellucci), the diva at the head of the cast. Expect more fireworks this season as he back behind the podium in Gotham.

And the second half of season 1 of the rebooted live-action version of “The Tick” is set to stream on Feb. 23. Peter Serafinowicz plays the sassy superhero who says, “murder is just not cool.” The show is created by Ben Edlund, who introduced the character in comic book form in 1986. His comic was adapted into an Emmy nominated animated series that ran from 1994-1997 and a short-lived live-action version in 2001 that starred Patrick Warburton.

‘Black 47’

The Audi Dublin International Film Festival (Feb 21- Mar 4) has announced its 2018 line-up.

Opening the 16th iteration of the event is the Irish premiere of Black 47. Lance Daly’s Great Famine-set thriller stars James Frecheville, Barry Keoghan, Moe Dunford, Hugo Weaving and Stephen Rea.

The closing night gala is C’est La Vie, from Olivier Nakache and Éric Toledano (The Intouchables).

Playwright and screenwriter Mark O’Rowe’s directing debut The Delinquent Season is one of seven world premieres. The cast includes Cillian Murphy and Eva Birthistle, both of whom will attend.

Other world premieres include Stacy Cochran’s Write When You Get Work and artist Alan Gilsenan’s The Meeting.

A24’s “The Disaster Artist” and “Lady Bird” led the pack of specialized successes, again landing in the weekend’s Top 10 chart. Both had to hold off the usual pre-holiday dip as well as the massive draw across all audiences for “Star Wars: The Last Jedi.”

A total of eight recent limited releases expanded this weekend –all their theaters combined add up to about the same number of theaters as “The Last Jedi,” but it grossed 22 times as much as the $10-million total of those eight films combined.

To a large extent grosses this week are gravy on top of past totals and more importantly a build-up to the most lucrative time of the year for adult moviegoing. Some obligatory credit is due to those ambitious (or, depending on the results, naive) enough to establish their name as a feature film director in 2017 on the basis of a genre-faithful western. The hazards of such an approach are not insignificant: take an earnest stab at crafting a film that belongs to a genre with an 80-year-long development trajectory — one that peaked as a self-contained narrative form well over 50 years ago, and has since hypertrophied into a self-aware meditation upon itself, replete with the postmodern, self-reflexive interrogations of the black-and-white moral worldview that forms the very meat-and-bones of the original films — and you run the risk of succumbing to unintentional parody in apparent disregard towards the historical developments of the genre you hope to submit to your vision. On the other hand, when executed with a slight, unostentatious nod to history and just the right touch of contemporary remixing, the rewards can be bountiful.

Bill Pullman stars as washed-up sidekick Lefty Brown, who watches his longtime friend/partner murdered before his eyes. He decides to go after the killer, rallying a group of people to support him, including an old, experienced gunhand and a young cowboy. The full cast includes Kathy Baker, Jim Caviezel, Tommy Flanagan, Diego Josef, and Joe Anderson, with an appearance by Peter Fonda as Lefty's murdered friend. This looks damn good, a moody revenge western with some real grit. Pullman seems great as always. The American Film Institute (AFI) has announced the films that will be featured in their New Auteurs and American Independents sections at the upcoming AFI Fest 2017 presented by Audi. Exclusive: Melissa Leo and Bill Pullman are coming back for the Equalizer sequel to co-star alongside Denzel Washington for Sony Pictures and director Antoine Fuqua.

Leo and Pullman are set to reprise their roles as Susan and Brian Plummer, the great friends of Robert McCall (Washington) when he worked in counter-terrorism. Susan was McCall’s handler. The cameras will roll in Boston on September 14.

Bill Pullman might not be the most obvious choice for a western hero at this stage of his career, but that’s exactly what makes him ideal for “The Ballad of Lefty Brown,” which isn’t about an obvious Western hero. As the titular Lefty, Pullman plays a 63-year-old sidekick in the wilds of late 19th century Montana, where he’s forced to take charge when the traditional hero (Peter Fonda) is suddenly killed. By giving the spotlight to an archetype usually relegated to the background, writer-director Jared Moshé puts a revisionist spin on the familiar oater, but everything else about “The Ballad of Lefty Brown” is by the book.
